MAGNET 1983 LEOMINSTER HIGH SCHOOL, 2 Gilt of the Clava eo Leominster High School Leominster, MA 01453 sini It seems that each class at Leominster High School over the years develops a special charac- ter, a sort of collective persona. ‘“That class was always good in theatre” or “Definitely a football class’’ are not unusual phrases. Our class, though, is quite distinctive in that it is always difficult to put one’s finger on exactly what it is that makes us special. ‘‘Spirited”’ is often and properly ap- plied, or else ‘“Psyched”’. From the first dance Freshman year to the last one Senior year, we’ve always been the largest class in attendance. In all extracurricular activi- ties, we’ve performed like the number one group we are. On the stage, this class is continually winning Interclass Play awards and getting leads in the school musicals. We marched from here to New York in Leominster’s best marching band, and class members have served on District Bands. Since Freshman year, we’ve edited the newspa- per and have produced many star athletes. Turn the pages and see how far we’ve come these past four years. We may have a long way to go, but overall, we’ve proven ourselves to be an “All Around Class’’. 1. Russell Durgin, 2. Patricia Mangiacotti, 3. Valerie Miller, 4. Betty Ann McDonald, 5. Soe 9eeeeeedeee0e08008080 @ On the sports fields, our class has performed like 4 the number one group we are. From Freshman year on, our class has had outstanding perfor- mances in every sport from field hockey to wres- tling, basketball to track. Members of our class have lent their talents to the 1981 Super Bowl champions, and in the same year, to the field hockey team that reached the district playoffs. The 1982 baseball team reached the district finals aided by the efforts of many members of the class of 1983. The 1982-83 year produced another series of success stories for our class. The football team again rose to a Super Bowl victory. Their com- plete dominance over the opposition proved that they were one of the greatest Leominster football teams of all time. The 1982 version of the soccer team, again reached the district playoffs and trav- elled to the semi-finals. Both the boys and the girls cross country teams fielded solid squads as did the field hockey team. The boys’ basketball and hockey teams were bolstered by a strong nucleus of players from the class of ’83. All this has been accomplished by more than just a few athletes. The number of participants has provided a source of pride for all of us in this “All Around Class’’. 1. Daniel Crowley Jeffrey Beauvais, 2. Our class started out a bit rowdy, but we got things orga- nized pretty quickly, and started moving as a class. The first ever Freshman-Senior Orientation really pulled us together; misery does love com- pany. Our first class activity was the canned food drive. We gathered nearly 500 cans for charity. Our first dance lost a huge sum of money, yet we weathered all this - - - - - - - - and became Sopho- mores. Our Halloween dance, complete with Franken- stein films and Horror Hall, set an all time record for the most profitable dance! While the Pancake Breakfast was not financially successful, it was a great boost to our class spirit- - proving us an “awesome” team! By junior year, we were cruising. Money rolled in from a million (or so it seemed) fundraisers. We produced a beautiful prom, and our Spaghetti Supper was a great experience. Graduation, which we staged, was capably and professionally done. Senior Year was a whirlwind. Now on the other end of Freshman-Senior Orientation, we made it the wildest one yet. We showed our “‘number one spirit’ in spirit chains, and went on to run a dynamite rally. The Senior Class Play ‘‘Dead- wood Dick’’ and the musical “‘Applause’’ were both tremendous successes. Time to move on to bigger, maybe better things. But we leave behind a legacy of successes, of spirit, of good times together. Eighty-Three — we did it all and we did it with class, that is, All Around Class’’. 1. Teresa Perla Michael Pothier, 2. Adalberto Rivera-Vega, 3. Sherri Regan, 4. Elizabeth Plamondon, 5. Since Sophomore year, class members have held offices in Student Council, something done by no class before us. In academics, we’ve been an impressive group. Straight A+s and eight Na- tional Merit Commendations have both been firsts that our class has achieved. We’ve taken awards in science, leadership and math at all levels. Above all, our class is outstanding in so many different ways. Our class has a certain “‘savoir faire,” and a certain togetherness. We were nev- er described as a “‘problem class”? when we left junior high. wWe were classier than that. Led by our class officers, representatives, team captains, club presidents, and stage stars, we ve been great everywhere and left our marks. We can only be described as an ‘‘All Around Class’’. 1. CAVANAGH with many thanks We, the members of the Class of 1983 would like to express our gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Cavan- agh, two members of the High School faculty, who have given so much of themselves to us over the past four years. They were always more than willing to explain classroom situations and school policies to the students, as well as giving us their own weather reports. Their involvement with our class was evident by the many times Mr. Cavanagh could be found supervising the corridors by the auditorium at dances and; who will ever forget Mrs. Cavanagh running the horror movie at the Halloween Dance when we were Sophomores? Their help and in- terest in our many activities have been greatly appreciated. We will be forever grateful to them, therefore, as a token of our gratitude, we would like to dedi- cate our Magnet to them. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Cavanagh, you have greatly enriched our lives. Through that process you have attained your own level of success and achievement. 3 y a Your future will likewise be determined by your application of abilities, interests, and motivation to the opportunities presented to you in your post high school years. Whether you choose to further your formal education or proceed directly into the work force, your degree of success will in large measure be determined by your own efforts. Sanskrit CLASS OF 1983 OUTING We were Juniors when we had our class trip in June of 82, but, we considered ourselves seniors. It was the first activity we did without another class over us. Who can forget when John Nowlin was pushed into the 50 ° water, fully clothed, or the sunburn we all had afterwards. We just couldn’t have picked a better day to go; it was beautiful weather. We all had something to do, whether it was softball, tennis, vollyball, or sunbathing. Yes, we all had a great time and a great day! 1. Laurie Murphy, 2. Michael Pellecchia, 3. Among some of the changes that have occurred in our lives concerning Leominster High School’s educational system is Leominster High School’s Ad- ministration. Between our freshman and senior years the prin- cipal’s and vice-principal’s position has changed. We started our freshman year with acting principal Mr. Antonucci and Vice-Principals Dr. Moore and Mr. Labelle. Dr. Dennen then became our permanent principal. Our junior and senior years underwent another change in administration. Mr. Antonioni became principal, and Mr. Walsh and Mr. Michaels filled the vice-principal positions. The superintendent’s position also experienced changes in the past four years. Dr. Carol held the superintendent’s position until we were juniors and then Mr. Rigopoulos temporarily held the position. In February 1983, Dr. Amadio became our new superintendent. Changes in our school building involved the location of the superintendent’s office, Leominster High’s central office, and the Guidance office. The Student Council has also had a new office built for it. With the installation of the superintendent’s office there has been no passage through the office for stu- dents and faculty. There also has been changes in the school’s schedule from seven to six periods. The past four years have been fast moving ones in the outside world as well as inside Leominster High School. We have listened to both new groups that have had overnight suc- cesses, and groups that are still great after twenty years. We’ve watched war and peace, boom and bust cast their images across our newspapers and television sets. Coke vs Pepsi... MacDonalds vs Burger King. . . Nike vs Adidas have been, perhaps, the biggest of all, with companies paying mil- lions for our patronage. We now go forth into this world to shape its events, take part in its fads, and listen to its sounds. But for now, the following pages review just what has happened so far in our lives in this world around us. 1. Christopher Kraemer Matthew Pawelski, 2. George Dupee, 3. John Crete, 4. The class has been competently represented and led by Freshman and Sophomore year president Robert Salvatelli, and Junior year president Wayne Daigle. Activities so far have included several very successful fundraisers, leading the class to an all time high trea- sury. The Prom Committee of 30, led by Chairmen Jill Minich, Wendy Phillpotts, and Tony Bangrazi, are producing a formidable event at the Sheraton-Box- borough. On the athletic field, the juniors make starring ap- pearances everywhere. In football, quarterback Dave Palazzi, fullbacks Rick Dandini and Mike Keough, and defensemen Dave McNally and Mike Lizotte form the spine of the junior squad - all start varsity. In Field Hockey, junior Amy DeCarolis stages incredible per- formances, and has made the Central Mass. Confer- ence All Star Team. Tammy Robichaud has been most valuable girl swimmer since Sophomore year, and has swum to Sectional Championships each year since 1980. In Cross Country, Kevin Crowley has been a CMC All Star since Sophomore year. Shawn Dupee runs the 100 yard dash faster than almost anyone in the area. The Class of ’84 constitutes a large part of the starting teams in Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ Basketball and Wrestling. On the stage, juniors have taken home a plethora of honors, including Best Supporting awards in the In- terclass Competition by Matthew Longo and Lisa Lipkind. Junior Interclass Plays have been ‘‘Sub- merged’’ Freshman year, and the highly successful “Games” in last year’s production. In the musical, Beth Pirro as Vera in ‘‘Mame”’ and Rob Lefebvre as Riff in ‘West Side Story” have both performed well in leading roles. A strong student council delegation, led by Student Council Treasurer Carlo DeSantis, has contributed in all areas of the school activity program, leading sever- al important committees. DeSantis has also led the student delegation to the School Committee for the past two years. In the academic sphere, Derek Goldberg, junior, has achieved high honors in the Elizabeth Haskins Math- ematics Contest. The class always produces a large honor role, and National Honor Society membership. Many more awards are in the cards for the future. The class seems destined to continue turning out terrific performances in all areas. The seniors wish them luck, and the great senior year they deserve. 1. Melanie Haligan, 2. Renee Upson, 3. The Sophomore class; however, is built of a different stuff. Quietly they entered the school as Freshmen, but have carefully built a reputa- tion for solid and broad based excellence in many fields of endeavor, a character of accelerating enthu- siasm, built to grow and last. Class President David Salvatelli has led the sopho- mores since Freshmen Elections. Assisted by two solid corps of officers and representatives, and guid- ed by advisors Mr. Sweatman and Mrs. Swanson, the class has been very successful in fundraising. They revived the tradition of the Frosh. concession at Bas- ketball games, and originated running a bus to the Super Bowl. Future prospects for class projects look bright as sound organization, and wide involvment are sure indicators of up and coming success. Sophomore faces are making appearances through- out the varsity scene. Rich Picucci in football, and Sean Bunnell and Peter Bernard in Basketball, are all class members playing varsity ball. Cathy Reddy, a freestyler, consistently makes girls swimming cham- pionships. Chris Keough, Jaimie Aubochon, Gail Tata and Sue Marciano in Track and Cross Country are all standout performers. The Soccer, Hockey, Field Hockey, and Wrestling teams boast large sophomore complements. The Junior Varsity football team turned in an undefeated season led by quarterback Sean Bunnell, center Scott Love and running back Matt Camardella. Other JV teams racked up similarly impressive records. In the performing arts, the Class of ’85 tackled the difficult Tudor drama “‘Gammer Gurton’s Needle”’ with showmanship and zest rarely seen in freshman productions. Leigh Ann Navaroli took Best Support- ing Actress; David Salvatelli and Tonja Gunn honor- able mentions for the show. The incredible soprano of Jennifer Ferlez made its appearance in ‘“‘Mame’’, heading a sophomore cast of thousands. The Student Council delegation, led by Planning and Activity Director Stephanie Shores is preparing for school leadership chores in the future. The team looks to be a good one. With a bright future in store, the Class of 1985 moves on into their upperclass years. 1. David Cormier Matthew Camardella, 2. Thomas Dolan, 3. Brian Carroll, 4. John Bessette, 5. Kathleen Elliot, 6. SONNE CLASS OF 1986 pitas Oe. kl Despite a sluggish start, Freshmen wheels have begun to turn, and the class is moving forward. Attendance at class functions has steadily increased, and rapt attention at all assemblies indicates a class learning and growing, striving to make their path to the Leo- minster High School mainstream. The Freshman class is not a class with a few superstars - it is rather a class with a cautious character, and many working mem- bers. President Kristen Caisse, and advisors Mrs. Gauthier and Mr. Caisse are off and running with class activi- ties, unity and involvement being their opening themes. The officers have held a class meeting to discuss tasks and gain support for the long road ahead. All sports teams have their freshman contingents, with an especially promising hockey squad led by Brian Gonthier, and goalie Mario Ziemi. Quarterback Matt Mazzaferro led the Frosh Football team to a respectable 4-2-2 football season, assisted by the tal- ented John DelGiudice, running back, and Ron Val- lee, linebacker. Mazzaferro has also taken a starting berth on the Junior Varsity Basketball team. A class priority is the pursuit of academic excellence, and the government is pledged to distinguishing the class in all such attempts. In the wake of Proposition 22, the Freshmen have reemphasized the idea that learning is the responsibility of the students. Its functions include providing great social events to the LHS community, retaining open communication with the faculty and administration, spon- soring school-wide assemblies, and representing the entire LHS student body in the school, the community, the region and the state. The Student Council has grown considerably with the introduc- tion of the Class of 83 to LHS. A year-long Lecture Series has been instituted. Jane Keeney, Advisor Nona Ojala, Advisor It takes a lot of people to give the time and energy needed to make a great yearbook. Not only did we tackle each picture and each write-up on every page, but we raised the money needed to create a yearbook which could express our image of the “‘All Around Class of 1983’’. Some people dedicated more time to the making of this book than others but every bit of help from a piece of artwork to a Senior write-up was greatly appreciated. We hope this book will be a visual reminder of our Senior year, the best year ever, at Leominster High School THE EDITORS 28) Staff photographers pose for the camera. cae Michael Millette debates some copy. They then sold candy sticks, pens, key chains, spirit mugs, and stuffed animals for Val- entines Day. All of these sales were very successful and helped very much in their goal. The Leominster High School football team powered its way to an undefeated season, and their fifth Super Bowl victory. It was also the second consecutive year that Leominster was crowned “‘Super Bowl Champions’’. This year’s team was so talented that they did not have to start anyone on both offense and defense. The offense, led by tailback Scott Chester, broke the school’s single season scoring record by over ninety points. Chester tallied twenty seven touchdowns, and rushed for almost 1,800 yards. He was aided by an outstanding offense line consisting of Doug McIntosh, Alan Becotte, Dan Crowley, Ed Lagoy, and John Normandin. The hard running of fullbacks Rick Dandini and Mike Keogh, took pressure off Chester. When Leominster went to the air, they were equally effective behind the arm of Dave Palazzi. Palazzi’s favorite targets were wide receiver Mike Bangrazi and Billy Sicard. On defense, the Devils also displayed their talents. The line of Bill Carroll, Tony Ferrara, Scott Keogh, and Mike Lizotte was exceptional in Leominster’s big wins over Brockton and Marlboro. Linebackers Bob Senee and John Saulnier made constant visits to the opposing backfields all season long. The hard hitting of Safety Joe Killelea and Linebacker Dave McNally provided excitement for the Leominster crowd. The biggest wins of the season came against Brockton, as they avenged the last two seasons losses, against Fitchburg when Chester scored four times, and their second straight victory over Hudson in the Super Bowl. Chester was again spectacular as he crossed the goal line five times. This was one of the greatest teams in Leominster history, and they will always be remembered as true champions. Their excellence on the field is a credit to the coaches, players, fans, and the Leominster football legacy. The 1982 team will not be forgotten!
