DARE Magnet 198 1 Leominster Hgh School Leominster, Ma. 01458 Ns Remember your first day of high school? Scared stiff, you wanted the floor to swallow you up; you hoped your clothes weren’‘t too con- spicuous and you desperately wanted to lose yourself in the crowd. Unfortunately, at L.H.S. it was all foo easy to get lost in the chaos... get lost in the building ... get lost in the bureaucracy . . . and it wasn’t easy to be outstanding. However, somehow during the next four years it became very important to be noticed. We be- gan to discover ourselves as well as the rowdies. This mild insanity became typical of our class. Whoever said our class lacked spirit was simply not looking far enough. They were missing that unique individual spirit that we all possess. We do have a certain spirit, a daring--- a daring to be different that makes us stand out above all oth- ers. This memento will help you to recognize this spirit in us, the class of 1984. As we prepare to say goodbye to L.H.S., let us look through these pages and remember that special spirit which unites us now and forever. oe aro es ee eae = oe Poe ey, ene { etter md vets ‘Sue . — lege 3 wriai ar @ 4 ‘ 7 Ty B42 = “of, Na etn KES i Oe es ee a Ga det ae ome a ae, Salles Met, Seem WOW ys GA, we bd Pe ae Ne, Sak” MOUNT eeTt Table Of Contents Faculty Seniors Year In Review Underclassmen Trade Sports Activities Organizations Advertising 19 42 90 2 7 116 137 167 190 17 FACULTY 20 Administration The Class of 1981 has left its mark on LHS. In the class- rooms, through the teams, and through the many stu- dent organizations, the students who now are leaving LHS as graduates have brought credit to themselves and their class. We wish you success in future years. We shall miss you. Dr. David H. Dennen Principal Daslaneaaree DR. DAVID H. DENNEN PRINCIPAL To the Graduates of the Class of 1981 The class of 1981 has distinguished itself in many ways. Several members of the class have recorded significant academic accomplishments. Others have achieved distinction on the athletic field, in the arts, and in student govern- ment. | expect that this record of accomplishment will continue in the years to come. Your class has contributed greatly to the regeneration of school spirit and pride at Leominster High School. Your leadership and energetic support for school activities has helped to revitalize student interest and involvement in those activities. Your commitment to the fundamental ideal of scholarship, upon which all education is based, will serve as a beacon to future graduating classes. Congratulations and best wishes for success in your future endeavors. Dr. J. Dennis Moore, ED. D. J Rowe Mov DR. J. DENNIS MOORE, ED. D. Congratulations to the Class of 1981! You have accom- plished a great deal in the four years you have been here. Hopefully, what you have learned should help you cope with whatever situations you will have to deal with in the future. If | can be of any help in the future don’t hesitate to call. Keep in touch and good luck. Richard P. LaBelle RICHARD P. LABELLE Vice-Principal VICE-PRINCIPAL Kidod 1 X£b0u To the Class of 1981: It would be conventional if | were to wish you success upon your graduation. However, | would like to wish you something that is more difficult to come by — meaning in your life; and meaning is not something you stumble across, like the an- swer to a riddle. Meaning is something you build into your life — out of your past, your affections and loyalties, your own talent and understand- ings, the things you believe in, the things and people you love, the values for which you are willing to sacrifice something. The ingredients are there for each of you. You are the only one who can put them toget her into that unique pattern that will be your life. Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning for you. If it does, then the particu- lar balance of success or failure is of less account. Future plans: Technical School, Computer Programming A class is not built in four years, it develops as time goes on, gathering new members and leaving be- hind others. As an integral part of the senior class and a new member of the chess team, Andrew Maxfield has grown with us through our first three years and at last has been able fo join us in these hallowed halls of good ‘ole LHS. Daring to be Different, to overcome many obsta- cles has been chosen as our theme. To you, An- drew, we ftip our hats, for you have overcome many obstacles on your way to graduation. For this we welcome you, salute you, and wish you the best in the years ahead. 43 44 Advisors: Mary Beth Wheeler Scott Hay Dear Graduates, 14981 seemed so far away when you began your years here at L.H.S! It’s hard to believe that this segment of your lives is now just a memory. We hope you will think back upon your high school days with happy thoughts, remembering good friends, good times, academic challenges, and personal achievements. As your advisors, this has been ourclass too. We have shared the good times as well as the bad with you. Most importantly, we have shared a part of your lives with you and we, too, have memories that will be with us always. In wishing you the best for the future, we hope that you can grow in peace and in love and that you continue to build your lives upon the high ideals and values that have made you, the Class of 1981, special to us. Phrise Tracy Bick: Bhat Miss Mary Beth Wheeler Mr. Scott Hay Senior Class Officers As freshmen, our class was forced to overcome many obstacles that stood in the way of receiving a well-rounded education. Due to double- sessions, we were separated from the upperclassmen. Leominster High seemed to lack the pride and unity that is essential during the high school years. Sophomore year was an eventful one that brought upon us many changes. We witnessed the completion of the new addition. Although it had many flaws, we were grateful to attend school on a normal sched- ule. It was also a new experience to be with upperclassmen. We united on several occasions such as the student walkout, which was the result of an unsettled teacher contract dispute. Because of this, teacher mo- rale was low at a time when our class was in desperate need of support. Fortunately, our junior year was full of positive changes, including a new principal. Although strict rules were enforced and privileges for us seemed few, we enjoyed the many extra-curricular activities that the Senior Class revived. We didn’t hesitate to occupy the designated court yards once the Seniors were gone, for we were all overly anxious to become the next proud Senior Class. It is amazing how far the Class of 84’’ has come in the past four years. We have gained the reputation of being a special and unique class whose footsteps will be hard to follow. Not only have we matured individually, but also as a whole. Senior year has been productive and we have managed to carry on the many traditions at L.H.S. with great success. This last year is passing more quickly than expected, with ‘‘Sen- ioritis’’ setting in extra early. Yet, before we know it, the diploma will be in hand and we will seek to achieve our foremost goals and dreams. Hopefully, the strong bonds of love and friendship that have developed over the years will never be broken. Yet, this is an inevitable occurence. For each individual must travel his or her own path, acquire new skills, build new friendships, and in essence - begin a whole new life. | would like to thank all of you for your support. | wish you good health, happiness, and peace in the years to come! The four students in the class have some form of retardation, but does this stop them? Not at all! Teacher Kathy Riordan and her assistant Grace Fallavalita teach their students some of the very things that we take for granted. They learn functional academics, socialization skills, activities for daily living, pre- vocational skills, art, music, and gym. The class is one learning experience after another. On Tuesdays the class travels to Victory Market where they go shopping and on Wednesdays they go to a workshop where they perform duties which will prepare them for jobs in the future. Holidays, too are a special time for these students. This is when they either put on a meal, hold a bake sale or just show everyone that holidays are a time for happiness and joy. These four students have indeed proven to be special in their own way. 113 NEA MS: ei VY | Bebo: dew ) RADE Allain, Edward Baldwin, Mark Bastarache, Ronald Berube, Michael Bourque, Richard Brettschneider, Leopg Cardinal, James 4 Charpentier, Dani é . rF fC Chiurri, David ¢ — 35 Gerdon Street Comeau, Jo a, a : 2) rose Street Congram, gonn . ieree Street an 2, ixth, Street 42 Dupont Circle Blanchard Street . Many times his work went unnoticed; however, now that is behind him because he will receive the recognition which he deserves. He has gone from a class room to an office, from an inexperienced teacher to a prominent figure of a superb office staff. He has had our cars brought into the automotive shop, never once complaining because of the backlog it might cause. Four years ago he looked at the incoming feshmen and smiled, making us feel as though we belonged. Even now when he smiles we forget the hard climb and work it took to become number one. However, we did it and we thank him now for helping to mold us into mature adults and never losing faith in us. In Memorium To: Mr. Algidio Membrino The graduating class of 1981 wishes to share this special moment of our life with a well respected teacher who retired in 1980 after 26 years of service to our school. We only spent 3 years together, but in those 3 years a special bond was formed, not that of an adult to a teenager, but that of one friend to another friend. At first we were wary of the attempted friendship; however, that changed when he proved that we could really trust him. In the 3 years we were with him, never once did he refuse to lend a student lunch money. He taught the students in the machine shop not only the skills they needed, but he taught them to respect themselves and everyone around them. He was strict in the shop and related class, but only because he cared and did not want to see anyone get hurt if it could be prevented. His students were not the only people he cared about, he cared about every student that walked through those L.T.H.S. doors. We never had the chance to thank him, and he never had the chance to see us graduate; however; now we want to say... thank you - Mr. Algidio Membrino. 121 To the Class of 1981 As you reach this plateau in your life and enter the world of work or further education, the day will come when your memories of your high school years all seem good. The skills and attitudes acquired will be with you forever. Build on them, modify or mold them to fit the changing culture you are now entering. If you approach every new task or plateau knowing that you did your best, you will experience the same success you had during your high school years. Mr. Robert Archibald Mr. Robert Hemenway Congratulations to the Class of 1981. It has been a pleasure working with the senior class, and | wish you all the success and happiness as you strive to reach your goals in life. 122 Office Staff Mr. Robert Hemenway: Supply Coordinator Mr. Harold Mooney: Co-op Coordina- tor Mr. William Mercer: Guidance Counselor Mr. Howard Hatch: Automotive Coor- dinator Mrs. Evelyn Tata: Secretary ) L fo 123 124 Class of “81” (left to right) James Manuel: Treasurer, Scott Class of 82’ (left to right) Carl Watkins: President, Paul Za- Houle: Vice President, Barbara Killelea: Secretary, William drozny: Vice President, Vincent Kelly: Treasurer, Kathy Ambur- Zayas: President missing gey: Secretary Class of “83’ (left to right) Tracy Coyer: President, Elizabeth Class of “84” (left to right) David Rivard: President John Smith: Plamondon: Vice President, Ross Bernier: Treasurer, Mark Ca- Vice President, Michelle Piper: Treasurer, David Harris: Secre- pone: Secretary ) tary =a ‘ Student Council (left to right) Elizabeth Plamondon: Sopho- Yearbook staff (left to right ) Shirley A. Under the direction of Maria Voyles and Danny Kline, the theme “That's Incredible’ was revealed to the bois- terous crowd, and that’s exactly what the rally was INCREDIBLE! Highlights of the rally included the male cheer- leaders, who gave us some laughs with their “shapely” bodies and witty remarks, and the Blue Devil and Red Raider battle. When these two foes met, the devil made the raider “Bite the Dust’ to the strains of “Sweet Home Alabama.” Last but not least, the L.H.S. imitation football players burst on the scene and strutted their stuff to the tune, “Ain‘t No Stopping Us Now.’’ The laughs continued as the football player skits got underway. a. eee —_. bin, {GH Ss F - 4 é 43 = THavksqiving Foorsart GAME LeominsreR FrrceHsure = EVILS RAIDERS N —_ =, - s 7 LINN FINAL Activities Activities Just before the christmas holidays, 22 youngsters rang- ing in ages from 2-5, were seen walking timidly along the crowded halls of LHS ac- companied by members of ay or e ay Nn the Child Growth and Devel- opment class. Alay ft : —_. CLASS SONG: BEST OF TIMES CLASS MOTTO: “DARE TO BE DIFFERENT “’ 224 All Farewells Should be Sudden. - Byron Goodbyes are never easy, but none of us realized quite how hard leaving L.H.S. would be. None of us realized how seemingly fast 4 years could fly, nor how many heartaches, joys, successes, mistakes, friendships and memories one could cram into those years. It is too soon to say that these were the best years of our lives. In fact, most of us probably look forward to better times! Yet, they were not bad years we spent, and it is not without a tinge of regret that we leave behind L.H.S. - not the building, but all the special friends and acquaintances that made it much more than a building. While we promise ourselves and each other that we'll keep in touch, we realize we probably won't. Yet, we will always have abundant memories of our high school days; memories which the staff hopes this yearbook recalls; memories on which to build a solid future which will someday also become an “awesome” past. This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. It is rather the end of the beginning.
