It is for that new beginning and your part in it that we give this book to you. Your support and loyalty for the school you love was undaunted through numerous setbacks and struggles. When life at L.H.S. was most difficult you worked long days and nights to help ease the way for our new school. Now that the dream has become a reality, you have chosen this time to say goodbye to your school. It is appropriate, we think, that in this, your “last of the ’70’s” at L.H.S., we show you by this small token how deeply we appreciate your gifts to us through our four years. To you, Mr. and Mrs. Cousins, we say thank you for giving of yourselves to us and to our school. We wish you good health and happi- ness in your retirement. LAI. IN APPRECIATION Oh The class of 1979 would like to express its deepest thanks to the entire library staff for all the care and concern they have given to the students of Leominster High these last four years. No part of our school is as representative of the changes taking place in our school as our brand new media center. We will always be grateful to Mr. Robert Bayley, Mrs. Jean Frick, Mrs. Gwendolyn Saunders and Mr. Gerard Aubuchon, our A. V. specialist, for turning a library from a place that merely stores books into a “media center’”—a place where students can work, study, learn and have fun. Thank you. aw. S bo ML As you travel the pathways of the future I know that you will have moments when you reflect upon those years spent at Leominster High School. The countless numbers that have pre- ceeded you have all experienced the nostalgia that comes with being a part of a proud institution. You will forget the frustra- tions and the failures but will remember the accomplishments of the classrooms and on the field. The one thing that will always be uppermost in your mind is the pride that you feel — this is my school. God Bless You All. ALDRICH V. COUSINS PRNCIPAL To the Class of 1979 Congratulations and best wishes to all of you. It was truly remarkable to witness such a smooth transition to single sessions. The Senior Class is to be commended for providing a mature leadership role for the underclassmen. I’ve shared many moments of happiness with you and I will miss you. May the coming years bring you success, happiness and love. Richard P. LaBelle Congratulations and Best Wishes to the Class of °79 You will be remembered as the first class in nine years to graduate on single sessions. This distinction, however, is of minor significance when compared with the many other ac- complishments of your class. The Class of ’79 has brought forth a new spirit at L.H.S.; a spirit of commitment and in- volvement which has been missing in recent years. Your boundless enthusiasm and energetic support for both class and school activities was deeply appreciated. The Class of °719 embodies a perfect blend of tradition and change; stu- dents who constantly search for improvement in construc- tive, rational ways. It has been a pleasure to know you and work with you during the past four years. Best wishes for success in your future careers. J. Dennis Moore Row 1 (L-R) Mary Crowley, Mary Olivier, Holly VomEigen. Row 2 (L-R) Bob Allain, Steve Perla, Mayor Moriarty It has been stated that knowledge is of most worth which enables people to do the best that they can, to be fulfilled, to achieve a sense of identity. The knowledge especially to be prized enables people to live close to the upper limits of their physical, mental, and emotional powers. Few people ever reach this ideal; most live far below their potential. My fondest dream is that the education you have achieved to date has provided you with the foundation which will enable you to soar to the upper limits of your abilities. Congratulations on your graduation and best wishes for success in the future. The times were not always easy, but you learned to make decisions and to cope in difficult situations. You are stronger today for not having had simple answers. We hope, though, that the memories you will keep will be happy ones: of having given the best of yourself, of having shared happy times and laughter with friends, of having accepted and conquered the challenges set before you. In the words of Peter Marshall, “Let not the past ever be so dear to us as to set a limit to the future.”” May your years at L.H.S. be your stepping stones to greater goals and higher aspirations. Look ahead with confidence and self-respect to a future that you have the power to make successful and fruitful. Our sincere congratulations and our very best wishes to each and every one of you. Pauline Baker Bill Hicks CLASS OFFICERS (L-R) Scott Stephens, Ann Bergeron, Claire Boyden, Kathleen Kennedy. As our high school years draw to a close, it is the end of but one chapter in our lives. The memories of these past four years will always remain with us. Even when the going got rough we hung in there and we can honestly say we made it. The friendships and experiences of these years will serve as the basis for our future. It is time to build upon what we’ve started, in the event that we may fulfill our goals and dreams. I thank you, the class of 1979, for letting me be a part of you. Our years together have been filled with so much, and they are ones which I shall always cherish. Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language, 81 82 he students at Leominster High in 1979 were probably the most rear- ranged, and moved about classes in many, many years. The juniors and sen- iors will remember being on double sessions as far back as the seventh and eighth grades. We have seen late sessions, early sessions, rotating schedules, and drop-a-period-a-day schedules. There was one change after an- other as we played musical schools and mu- sical sessions for five long years. Then one summer a couple thousand kids took off on their summer vacation. Some of us were juniors and seniors who weren't too excited about getting up at five-thirty when fall rolled around again, and some of us were freshmen and sophomores who weren't really looking forward to getting out of school at five-thirty at night, either. Little did we know that while we were out swimming, watching t.v. and goofing around, our mild mannered high school was being transformed into a super school. oi HP Se Va 84 around LIne back We were w, when )- fifteen. iere.wer;re doors, say blue) With new and even nch hour talk and EB Sy a NE A eR Pa — he students were not the only ones who experienced changes; the teachers did, too. Now they would never know if it was “those awful morning people” or “those terrible afternoon people” marking up the bulle- tin boards and writing on the desks. With all the teachers together on one session, it was more like one school instead of two. In 1979, school was not just someplace you went, it was something you did. A place where you studied, made friends, and had a pretty good time once again. 87 88 ee nest AEE OLE LI RET OSES RT 89 93 a Ogee mpgtcter eat aye HUM 97 98 CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1979 Have traveled far together Through good times and bad With memories that will last forever. Our first encounter with double sessions was in 1974 at Gallagher There we started our journey together as a class We were the first Freshman class to walk the halls of L.H.S. It was a difficult adjustment to begin our day at 1:00 Rotating our schedules made our day even more confusing 6:30 rolled around and most went home to a cold and lonely dinner. As Sophomores the day began at 12:30 and ended at 5:30 Our day was shortened by dropping a period a day There was a lot of change taking place around the school The long awaited construction for our new addition finally began. Junior year our time schedule was again different We attended school from 7:15 to 12:15 It was great to have all afternoon to do as you pleased. Our job as juniors was to plan the Prom It was a lot of work but lots of fun. Finally we became Seniors Our long awaited journey was almost at an end Another time schedule was given to us to follow From 8:45 to 2:15, a normal school day -The School was united from Freshmen to Seniors All our spirit helped our soccer team to win the State Championship It also pulled us through to a Thanksgiving victory with a score of 3 to 0 in overtime. As an undefeated team we went to the Superbowl and won in overtime - 13 to 6. This proved that our spirit soared. After June 10th we’ll part our ways And though we may never be fully united again Our times spent together will always keep our memories alive. ; _ Digs ee re ches 102 J. Aalto J. Adair K. Albert B. Bisceglia and Drum Major Nunzio Rosselli, the Leominster High School March- ing Band had a very successful year playing at the football games and performing during the half-time show. After the football season ended, the band began preparing for their Christmas concert. The concert was held Decem- ber 13, 1978, in the Leominster High auditorium and was enjoyed by all who attended. With the end of the Christmas season, the band began pre- paring for their exciting spring season. The band performed at a few concerts during the year. They also marched in several local parades and in the anniversary parade in Lunen- burg. In conclusion there were trips for the band that will long be remembered by all who participated. The Magnet staff consists of a very small group of students who de- dicated themselves throughout the year to attend numerous meetings. Nothing could stop them, whether it was a night they froze standing outside waiting for a janitor to open the door, or the many hours spent on “those Saturday Nights” at Kathy’s. These people deserve credit, because without them and our faithful advisors, Linda Douglas and Sandy Sciabarrasi, this yearbook would have been a dream and not a reality. At this time I would like to express my gratitude to Sandy, especially for all the patience she gave to our staff. For this, our staff would like you to know we will never forget it. Kathy 132 OUR SPECIAL THANKS Another year of “yearbooking” has come to an end and it is time for us to say thank-you. There are some members of the yearbook staff who deserve many thanks. For doing the hard part, we say thank you to Linda Gaudet, Anna Bisol, Mark Twichell, Karen Camp, and Kim Sawin. A special thank you to Paula Stebbins for all the beautiful artwork in our yearbook (much of which was done at last minute’s notice.) To Judy Roffee, Rich Piermarini, and Tom Knight we say thank you for pitching in at the crunch and photographing and developing our pictures. And a special thanks to Mr. Baker for allowing us to tie up the darkroom for several days. For all their time and hard-work on this yearbook we say thank you to Jeff Foster, Mike Marini, and Mr. Robert Hemenway. To Alice Kornitsky we also say thank you for all the time and effort she devoted to the book as Loring correspondent. Most importantly, our thanks to our Editor, Kathy Jacques and to her mother, Mrs. Claire Jacques for opening her home to the yearbook. Our fondest thank-yous. FOOTBALL 136 three teams since 1894 to finish the Leominster football season with a perfect 11-0 record - no losses and no ties. The season began with a con- vincing win over St. John’s, the defending Central Division I Mass. Champions; continued through the middle of the season with an outstanding 17-0 victory over Eastern Mass. powerhouse, Brockton; and finished up with an overtime 3-0 victory over Thanksgiving rival Fitchburg and a Super- bowl 13-6 overtime victory over Milford for the Division I State Football Championship Trophy. There were many bright moments along the way to such an outstanding season. Perhaps the brightest was the thrill- ing 3-0 overtime victory over Fitchburg on Thanksgiving morning. This was the 6th straight year that Leominster has beaten Fitchburg in the second oldest rivalry in the nation. Many individuals were involved in the success of the 1978 football team, as witnessed by the boys who were chosen to the various all-star teams. Each of the following boys was chosen to at least one all-star team: Doug O’Donnell at QB, Tony Carmadella at HB, Chris Daigneault at End, Paul Becotte at Tackle, Mike Hannigan at Guard who all made an offensive team. Jay Arsenault at End, Dave Brow at Tackle, Joe Veneziono at noseguard, Andy Ahola at LB, and Frank Novak at Safety all made the defensive team. The 1978 Varsity Football Team has certainly left its mark in the history books and will go down as one of, if not the greatest, football teams in the history of Leominster High School Football. oT he 1978 Varsity Football team became one of only b= ; Cea n VS a wn “a = 2 ? a 3 S | Loot jn eee eA, OE « C agp en Weld ie bis Borers akin EG i=} ites eS Oe FIRST ROW: L-R, Scott Stevens, Rich Piermarini, Joe DeCarolis, Jay Arsenault, Chris Daignault, Doug O'Donnell, James Ermini, Andy Ahola, John Tucker, Jim Rhodes, Dave Brow. This distinguishes Leominster as the first Central Mass. team to win the state cham- pionship. The team lost its first two games, but then went on to compile a 20 game unbeaten streak for overall record of 17-2-3. Key wins over St. John’s and Fitchburg enabled the Blue Devils to gain the CMC crown. They finished with a league record of 9- 0-1. In district championship play, the Devils won hard fought games against Wachusett, Worcester North, and Marlboro. In the state semifinal match, Leominster upset a highly favored New Bedford team, 2-1. In the process, the 2.7 mile dual meet course record fell twice. Tim Swart, a senior running his first year of cross- country, set the course record of 14:30.8, only to have it broken a week later by junior Rick Marciano, who established a 14:15 mark. Co- captains, Steve Baron and Chris Phillips, were the number 3 and 4 runners during the season with junior Paul Gagnon running in the 5 position. Both Steve and Chris recorded personal bests in the Lunen- burg Invitational. Rick and Tim earned league all-star status with Tim placing fifth and Rick placing sixth in the CMC League meet. Rick ran an outstanding race in the District III finals and this enabled him to qualify for the state meet, where he placed 75th overall. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY or the second time in the 3 year history of girls cross-country at Leominster High, the team qualified for the District III finals. Although posting a losing record of 3-8, the girls had many individual ac- complishments. Norma Cote ran in the team’s number one spot all year, setting a new girls record over the 2.7 mile course. Norma obtained CMC all-star status with a fourth place finish in the CMC league meet. Senior Judy Roffee was league all- star with a 6th place finish in the league tons: 0m meet. Senior Colleen Mason posted her et eR, best finish ever in the District III trials 4 Tr Me and recorded the best times of her cross- ae country career. Injuries forced senior Sue Ryder to sit out most of the season and her loss as a competitor was greatly felt, but she continued as a team member to sup- port, cheer and contribute to the team’s ef- forts. Fy the first time in five long years the well drilled and and very exciting Blue Devil Basketball Team defeated arch-rival Fitchburg High by a very impressive 65 to 60 score. The basketball team participates in probably the best basketball league in the state and in doing so came up with the biggest upset in the Central Massachusetts Con- ference by knocking off Division I leader and previously undefeated powerhouse Holy Name! The winning basket came with only two seconds left: a smooth and crisp pass by Genorace Armstrong to rugged center Mark Dickin- son who layed the ball up and in for a B-I-G 66-65 win. The win, no doubt, was one of the most significant in all of Blue Devil Basketball history. Other key victories to date were two league victories over cross-town rival St. Bernards and a high scoring 85-68 thrashing of Shrewsbury High. Coach Ron Mazzaferro is very pleased with the great effort the team has given and said: “This team doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit. It is a pleasure to coach such a fine group of young men.” High scoring Genorace Armstrong leads the team in that capacity with a 22.1 point per game average. Despite the carrying on of the “band members” and _ various “macho men” the performers did not lose sight of the real rea- son behind this annual event—to spur the mighty Blue Devils on to another Thanksgiving Day vic- tory. The Devils met the task, de- feating Fitchburg for the sixth straight time. SENIOR CLASS PLAY his year’s senior class play, The Diary of Anne Frank, was presented by the class of 1979 in the Leominster High School auditorium on December eighth and ninth. It was a sensi- tive and touching drama involv- ing a family of Jews hiding from the Nazis during the Second World War. Despite its serious theme, the play provided many warm and humorous moments; a beautiful, realistic portrait of family life that will remain time- less. The actual production was very difficult to stage; almost all of the characters were required to remain on stage at all times, even to change costumes. However, with the help and cooperation of many, many, people, The Diary of Anne Frank was truly a play of which the entire school could be proud. a THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK This year’s Zalmair Shepherd Awards were presented to the following seniors: Best Actress: Ann Bergeron Best Actor: Timothy Swart Best Supporting Actress: Ann LeBlanc Best Supporting Actor: Gary Dean Special thanks must be extended to Mrs. Louise Thomas and Ms. Martha Pitre for their unfailing encouragement and support; to Dave Brow for design- ing and building the complex set; to Christine LeBlanc, the lighting techni- cian; to the Student Director, Sue Levine, and to all other patrons and supporters who made the production possible. oe eg GF cs bs) CAST OF CHARACTERS Mr. Frank Miep Mr. Van Daan Mrs. Van Daan Peter Mrs. Frank Margot Anne Mr. Kraler Mr. Dussel Publicity Patrons and Tickets Costumes Props Tim Swart Sue Anderson Joe Albee Anne Le Blanc Gary Dean Frances Katz Lisa Iacoboni Ann Bergeron Dan Hare Scott Malatos PRODUCTION STAFF Student Director Set Design Stage Manager Lighting Technician - Sound Technician Susan Levine Dave Brow Brenda May Christine LeBlanc Sean Dandley Lynn Poirier, Paula Stebbins, Debbie Egge Sharon Mullaney Patricia Lefebvre Nancy Brown, Kelly Crane Mary Normandin INITIATION — [-°) pad Mai ies Sei Wh Pedram ne 182 BORSA NER RARe, NTE ce tame ] DEDICATION SPREE EPEP ES © mayhot oe haa eae Sexy SS We, the class of 1979, dedicate this yearbook to William Johnson. Mr. Johnson spent 34 years of his life working with the young people of Leominster as an instructor of carpentry skills and as a teacher of students with special needs. Mr. Johnson’s contributions go far beyond that of a teacher. He has been a friend to his students and has tried to instill the values of the world of work and in- dustry. It is with great pleasure that we in turn, are able to dedicate this yearbook to a man who has dedicated his life to us and our school. 185 186 1978 - 1979 CO-OP STUDENTS F AI Automotive Henri Leger Michael Lott Michael Martin Michael Parmenter Auto Body Raymond Dupuis John Proietti Steven Bliss Co-Op Director Harold Mooney Machine Craps Scott Amburgy Paul Cormier David Godin Robert Hebert Michael Davis Rheal Leger Larry Martin Steven Infantino Gerard Marcoux Anthony Perla Tim Richard Kenneth Trombley Andrew Malouin Communications Jeff Foster Mark Lessard Industrial Electronics Wayne Lacouture David Lastella Michael Marini Daniel Salafia Drafting Denis Leger Cooperative vocational education provides an excellent vehicle for students to develop desired vocational capabilities through a program which balances the acquisition of skills learned on the job with related skills and information learned in the classroom.
