After one year of coping with the hassles of going to school in the afternoon, we moved into the ranks of the “upperclassmen” and were accorded the priv ilege (?) of the morning session. Since it was popu- larly believed that God him- self was still sleeping at 7:15 A.M., most of us thought it unfair to be expected to be “bright-eyed and_ bushy- tailed” for our first period class. If you gave up on the history test you didn’t study for because you knew you were going to flunk anyway, you could always look out the window and watch the sunrise. And where else in the world in the wintertime but Leominster, Massachu- setts, could you be lucky enough to ride to school in the dark? But we made the most of our situation. We became accustomed to eating breakfast in school; indeed, if it wasn’t for Sugar Pops and Super Donuts, most of us would have thrown in the towel three days into our junior year. With the advent of the 1977-1978 school _ year, however, Leominster High School underwent great change, in the form of an addition to the existing school buildings. Structur- ally, the addition meant a new media center, class- i‘ B 4 a Z i =a a tt ey ; El room wing, science wing, bandroom, gymnasium, cafeteria, and trade shops. But what did the addition mean to the average student? To most of us, the ad- dition meant chaos. There were workmen running in and out, creating a lot of confusion, just as much noise, and a gigantic mess. The addition meant hunting for a parking space by dawn’s_ early light and dances at Southeast Elemen- tary School because of the parking problem. The addi- tion meant an indefinable “construction” smell that invaded every corner of every room; it was also the reason why that big mound of dirt was sitting on the side of the gym playing field. What was to blame for all that hammering, banging and drilling that was going on all around you? Why couldn’t students use the Stairs by the cafeteria to get to the first floor? Why didn’t Room 105 have any windows? Why was Room 121 on the second floor in the library? You guessed it: the addition. The addition was the biggest change at L.H.S. since the advent of double sessions. It was a type of insanity; a change that we, as students, were expected to adapt to and deal with as we did double sessions. And, for the most part, we did. L.H.S. has changed, and, as it changed, so have we. Ww hw 11 13 14 16 OPS ee Scenes: eal J We have matured and become responsible | young adults, ready to fulfill our dreams and ambitions while serving as usefull, produc- tive members of society. The Class of 1978 should be proud. We have achieved success in an academic atmosphere radically dif- ferent than that of most schools. Out of this “insanity” have come caring individuals whose shared experiences will bond them together for a lifetime. We will never forget the spirit and the camaraderie of our years at L.H.S. Our experiences here are our build- ing blocks for the future; for graduation is not an end, but a beginning. 17 Dedication - + ; Ae, A hhc, oe ee et ies co (ee ; 2 lea et FE Ms. Betty Lavin 18 Whoever said that good things come in small packages must have had Ms. Lavin in mind. She is well-known to most Leominster High School students as a dynamic teacher and as a warm and caring woman. A staunch believer in the idea that students are people, she shows her interest and concern by her involvement in all phases of LHS student life. Whether it be selling tickets to the Christmas dance (“Hi, guys — Ms. Lavin here!”’), acting in a rally skit as the Head Coach of the LHS faculty cheerleaders, or cheering for LHS at vari- ous sporting events, “Lady Lav” is an enthusiastic participant in LHS affairs. Known for her particular craving for Egg McMuffins, she has often been the recipient of mysterious presents wrapped in Mc- Donald’s bags (Psst! Anybody making a ‘Mac’ run?!!). But Ms. Lavin is much more than a member of the Leominster High faculty. She is a personal friend to many members of the Class of 1978. Always there to offer advice spiced with her own special brand of humor, she really listens and cares. Whenever you have a prob- lem, it’s nice to know that there’s someone you can talk to who will try to understand your feelings without criticizing or making value judgments. The Class of 1978 owes you a debt we cannot possibly repay — your love and guidance have been an immeasurably special part of our three years here. We love you, Lady Lav! Many thanks and much love, The Class of 1978 19 22 Administration LOSLEESGEASS OES 197 : You have seen it happen. You probably thought it would never become a reality. Double sessions had become a way of life for you and the other classes of our proud high school. Thankfully your class will be the last to be subjected to double sessions. Under very trying conditions your class still a- chieved the goals it had set for itself. May your future be one of worthy a- chievement, happiness and above all, good health. God bless you all. Martha Senior Class Officers i oe SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS — 1978: Vice-President, Sherry Gardner; President, John Coleman; Secre- tary, Janet Bessette; Treasurer, Vicki Phillips. To The Class Of ’78 The years we have spent together have been long but yet productive. Our class, in many ways, will be used as a standard in the future. Years after we leave this building, classes will still be trying to top the enthusiasm of our rally, the excitement of our victory over Fitchburg, and the absolute excellence of our Senior Class Play. We will be remembered as a class that did not have a normal year of high school, yet made it through the ordeal with spirit and enthusiasm and a sense of pride at what we have accomplished. Although our high school career was less than perfect, we should not be disillusioned, for we have grown as individuals and have made and kept many new friends. For that we should be thankful. The past year brought some successes and some failures for our class. | deeply regret that we weren’t able to do everything we wanted, but nevertheless, we did embark on a course of posi- tive action in an attempt to reach our goals. It has been my utmost honor to serve as your Class President in our Senior Year. Let us move forward into the world with love in our hearts, pro- moting equity and equality for all, in all situations. We can make this a better world, if that is the cause to which we are dedicated. John Coleman 39 re: aie David Agnew 40 “ whl. None of this would have taken place without the guidance and devotion of our theatrical director, Mrs. Elsie Adams. ; ee 28 =o See © Nesp — far) — J Y) O Y) = v iS “Hear Ye, Ci A Cry Of Players On November 18 and 19 the class of 1978 celebrated the 75th Senior class production by performing ‘A Cry of Players’”” by William Gibson. The play depicts William Shakespeare as a young man and his problems lead- ing a convential life with his family and fellow townsmen. Through long rehearsals and over-all enthusiasm the play proved to be a success on both nights. This year’s Shepherd Awards, cre- ated by Zamair Shepherd in 1959, went to Paul Amadio, best actor, Mau- reen Schickel, best actress, Colin Young, best supporting actor, and Janice Les, best supporting actress. The Senior Class of 1978 extends its special thanks to student directors, Kelly Smith and Melanie Caponi, and to Mrs. Elsie Adams. At Leominster High Thanksgiving Day Rally This year’s Thanksgiving rally was a whopping suc- cess due to a combination of senior psyche, class co-operation, and the ap- pearance of a soap Star, Candace Earley. It was an unqualified success, as all who attended will agree. A delicious meal was served, and music was provided by the band “Shimmer.” The dance was a welcome addition to the merriment of the holiday season; the sophomores, along with Ms. Lavin and Mr. Stef- fanides, did a fine job. 118 ivities Fest Holiday 119 -1978 UH 120 Activities Football Pete Beaulieu did a fine job this year of coaching the Leominster Blue Devils. He brought out an unbeliev- able amount of school spirit supporting the Mighty Blue all the way. The Devils of 1977 had a season of 6 wins and 4 losses, captained by seniors Rusty Tata and Jim Normandin. They also had two dedicated managers, Dan Bissonnette and Doug Matthews. You might say that Leominster started off the season In The Rain. Even after losing their first three games the fans were not discouraged, and their faith pulled the team through to a five game winning streak. One of the wins was to the so-called Brockton power- house. Leominster High left the field with a 21-7 vic- tory. After suffering a loss to Lowell, the Blue Devils made an overpowering comeback, destroying arch- rival Fitchburg 7-0!! The squad of 1977 carried through its season with the help of such outstanding players as Jim Norman- din, our dynamic noseguard, Steve Rigopoulos, an inspiring detensive end, and George Shade, our half- back who deserves much recognition for his outstand- ing achievements throughout the season. Rusty Tata, Doug White, Tony Marro, John Hume, Tom Secino, Dave Girouard, Steve Richard, Greg Storro, Tom Pirro, Mike Navoroli, Steve Lattanzio, Eddie Mann, Tom Palazzi, and injured earlier this season, Don Farineau and Ross Amico, all deserves praise for their concen- trated team efforts. With the help of our devoted fans the Big Blue Devils proved that team work was the way to a great 1977 season. This team voted George Shade and Jim Normandin the Most Valvuable Players and Tom Palazzi the Most Improved. 124 VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM ROW ONE: Tony Marro, Bubba Richard, Steve Rigopoulos, Doug White, Steve Lattanzio, John Hume, Rusty Tata, Jim Normandin, Mike Navaroli, Tom Palazzi, Tom Pirro, Greg Storro, Dave Girouard, ROW TWO: Billy Dona- hue, Bill Lefebvre, Jim Fluet, David Brow, Jay Arsenault, Scott Stephens, Doug O’Donnell, Ross Amico, Chris Daignault, Ed Mann, George Shade, Barry Sicard, ROW THREE: Rich Piermarini, Jack Tucker, Bob Hinds, Frank Angelini, Jimmy Rhodes, Carl Cote, Bob Stelluto, Paul Becotte, Joe DeCarolis, Tony Camardella, Mike Kelley, Norman Tourigny, ROW FOUR: Coach Pete Beaulieu, Donald Starr, Coach John Dubzinski, Mike Usshery,Tom Valiton, Dom Zarella, Mario! This season began with a loss to Quabbin and two victories over Shrewsbury and Doherty, followed by another loss, this time to St. John’s. Hardly satisfied with a 2-2 record, the Blue Devils, led by tri-captains Dave DiNardo, Tony Perez, and Randy Saudelli, surged ahead with full power and full team effort to demoralize Fitchburg by a 4-0 shutout. From that point on, the mighty Devils never let up. They went on to win 10 games and tie 2 to end their season with a 13-2-2 record. The Devils compiled 11 shutouts out of the 13 wins. Rich Agnew led the team in scoring with 16 goals. This season, unlike last year, the new team had 11 seniors to lead the way. Ross Carol, Bill DeVarney, Brian Ricker, and Randy Saudelli played offensively, and for the defensive line were Dave DiNardo, Mike DiNardo, Dave DePasquale, Tony Perez, Dave Proietti, and Rick Smith, with Tony Crane in net. The whole team appeared ready when it came to the Districts. At their first test they handed Auburn a 4-2 defeat. For their next game, the Blue Devils faced always-tough St. John’s of Shrewsbury. L.H.S. fell to the Pioneers in this game, ending their hopes of being District Champions. However, Leominster had a sensational season and we are proud of all of them. The official season began on September 8 with the first practice and con- tinued until November 7, when the team fell to Quabbin Regional 2-1 in a hard-fought, first round dis- trict game. This made the team the first of hopefully many LHS field hockey teams to go to the districts. As was true of most of the activities at the High School, the effect of the building program was felt by the field hockey team, when their traditional playing field was ‘‘torn assunder”’ and they were forced to find a new home field at Fallbrook Elementary School. This also led to a problem of transportation to daily practices but these initial setbacks were easily solved with the co-operation of the team and its dedicated coaches, Lady and Miss ‘C’. The months have passed so quickly that we've really had little time to stop and. think about what we, as advisors, have accomplished. We know that there have been certain areas in which we let you, our staff, down. One thing, though, is certain. Whatever we have learned, however we have grown as advisors, it is because of a super yearbook staff. You’re not large in— numbers, but your ability to work under pres- — sure, your enthusiasm and spirit have really done - a lot to support us. You are all special and unique people and we love you. i We would most especially like to say a deeply felt thank-you to Marcia, Gail, -baurie, Chris, Colin, Cindy, Kathy, and Lisa. We know that it is your hard work and dedication that created the 1978 MAGNET. We'd also like to say thank you to those people who have helped us in our year as advisors — most, especially Ron and Steves Our sincere thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Lipkind for the use of their home during vacations, week-ends, and all the days when yearbook “stuff” cluttered the dining room. Evelyn Tata We, the class of 1978, would like to dedicate this yearbook to Evelyn Tata. For the past eight years she has been a‘secretary for trade and a mother to us all. Mrs. Tata is the first to open the office in the morning and to get the school off to a rolling start. From our first day as fresh- men she has helped many of us to stand on our own two feet, and she has helped us to reach the door of our future. It’s an honor for the class of 1978 to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Tata. 174 ee | ay saat Se Se VN ae 5% i ‘ : : - § : 3 se V sree EN es Sager ety Sah lacing aan eee So re Message To The Class Of 1978 As you go forward into the world of work, life and living, may you constantly be aware of the quality and quantity of your education that will affect your daily challenges. Whether your education was in the academic or trade section remember that in the final analysis all education is occupational to some extent. Now more than ever, “he who has a trade, has an estate.” May you face life’s challenges with confidence and humility remembering that the true spirit of liberty is that spirit which is not too sure that it is right. Hemenway Ruth Ouellette Joe Mello was the 1978 Senior Class President. He also participated in Student Government Day at the State House as Commissioner of the De- partment of Agriculture. Even with all these ac- tivities he had time to go to the Junior High Schools in this area and also to elementary schools to recruit students into the Trade School. On various speeches he was accompanied by Ruth Ouellette who is one of the two senior girls that attended Trade High School in 1978. A special thanks is to be given to both of these students.
