If it were not for their concern, dedication, and effort, our class would not have been as successful as it was. The Senior Class really outdid themselves this year when they presented the Thanksgiving Rally to gather up school spirit for the annual Turkey Day game against Fitchburg High. Chairmen Sharon Bigelow and Joey Crowley spent many frustrating hours organizing the rally. Everyone pitched in to help decorate the school and gym and, as always, the event was a big success. The dedication song, ‘Time in a Bottle’? proved to add just the right touch to send our school on to a roaring victory over Fitchburg. 92 sce sins mae CET ii iain vite Nae Gel Ss Z, a va — = aw = = a Z, = me ee coee OH ¢ a bbeaareets ECR OF Oey TWENTIES DAY Twenties Day was begun as an Eng- lish project for Mrs. Rheault under the supervision of Mary LeBlanc and Frank Clementi. Fifty students and teachers volunteered to come to school dressed as people from the era of the Roaring Twenties. The project came off as a big success when flappers, Al Capone, and Bonnie and Clyde invaded the halls of LHS to add spark to an otherwise bor- ing school day. 96 97 98 SENIOR CLASS PLAY This year's Senior class play ‘‘The Education of Hyman Kaplan”’ was the first musical ever chosen for a Senior production. Under the direction of Mrs. Elsie Adams, the seniors involved spent months working on sets, scenes, musical numbers, and all the other aspects involved in the production of a play. The end result was seen on Decem- ber 6th and 7th when delighted audiences viewed Hyman Kaplan's touching and hilarious story. This year’s football team did it all. They became the Division | Central- Western Mass Champions. There is a story behind this success. It all begins with camp in late August. Every boy that goes to camp must fight heat and fatigue to gain his position. And after a week of physical torture the season is yet to begin. The first week of practice is no happy occasion because winning the first game is very important. Throughout the season, physical and mental attitudes are kept at their peak to assure 100% from every player who puts on a football uniform. Much credit must be given to the coaches for they, too, work hard to gain success. In fact, coaches battle every obstacle that a player does, and at times become active parts of a practice session or scrimmage. The most important element of this year’s team was the fact that they were a TEAM. In past years it has been only the individual players who have stood out, and unfortunately this proved to be a shortcoming. This year’s team, however, didn't have any great superstars. It did possess many individuals with talent, but without the total cooperation of all 11 men, this talent would have been wasted. So the word which best describes Leominster High’s first Championship victors is TEAM. A championship, a Thanksgiving victory, and competition with some of the | finest athletes in the game of football are what make winning a goal that all athletes try their best to achieve. And this year’s team has done it all. ) THANKSGIVING 3 Po 4 This year’s L.H.S. soccer team has compiled a very impressive 1 1 -0- 3 regular season record. This record is only the second undefeated record L.H.S. soccer has h ad since it was first started. The Blue Devils shut out every opponent except in the games they tied. Coach John- son's booters were looking forward to the tournament finals, as were many of the soccer fans. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils did not receive the honor of becoming Western Massachusetts Champions. L.H.S. shut out Shrewsbury in a quarter-final game but fell short by one goal to a highly skilled Pittsfield team in the semi-finals. The 1973 team was led by senior tri-captains Ernie Rooney, Bob Newman, and Mike Pananos. Senior members who also contributed to L.H.S.’s potent attack were Brian Beaudette, Gus Cousins, Gary Pulsi- nelli, and Brian Cali. But the record doesn’t show the team’s intense spirit of the fine individual performances. The team kept up their spirits and worked hard together. , They ran 8 or 9 miles a day or up and down hills, one of which they affectionately named ‘‘Agony Hill.’’ This gives you an idea of what cross-country is all about. It is training under all kinds of conditions and improving one’s time. It is running in the rain or the bitter cold. It is cheering your team- mates on in their race against the clock. It is agony, but with a reward, a feeling of accomplishment that comes after the sweat and toil of getting into shape. Everyone on the team improved their time on Leominster’s cross-country course, which covers a distance of 2.8 miles. Mike Peterson, a senior, bettered his time over last year by 30 seconds. He consistently fought hard to get in the top five positions and placed 13th in the Knight’s of Columbus road race out of over 600 runners. John Natchtway, another sen- ior, was a fierce competitor, often dueling with Peterson for position. He took first place in the last meet of the year against Athol with an outstanding personal effort. Andy Proos, in the same meet, fell down and broke his collar bone, but got up and finished 5th. He was worried about the team and forgot about his own physical pain. Andy is a junior and will be back next year to lead the team. | Another junior who improved a great deal this year is | Gary Holforty, a quiet but strong performer. Charlie Ciccone, __ who kept the team together with his witticism and spirit, had an up and down season, but on the whole had some good | runs for the team. Tom Marrone, the late riser, was another | strong team member. Finally a sophomore, David Craigue, __ shows tremendous potential and should break records for L.H.S. in the future. | Coach Tulonen looks forward to a brighter season next | year and there are rumors that he will have the team start training during the summer. The future certainly looks sunny for our cross-country team. aE ee 127 —— _ BASKETBALL SECOND ROW (left to right) Rick Hutchinson, Billy Allen, Jim Tholmann, Charlie Richards, Rick Comeau, Coach Ted Damko : A FIRST ROW (left to right) Dave Kielty, Ronnie Davis, Mike Crowley, Charlie Watts, and Jay Bertolozzi THIRD ROW (left to right) John Crawley, Rick Daignault, Charlie Kirouac, Kevin Buckley, Doug DeCarolis 33555 Sone. Thirty-one girls swam during the regular season against eight teams in the central division. The highlight of the competition was a decisive 35-60 victory over the Fitchburg girls. Sixteen swim- mers competed in the Eastern Mass. Championships at the Brockton High pool and five girls represented Leominster at the State Cham- pionships at Springfield College. Captain Ann Barnett placed in the 100 yeard backstroke. The relay teams with Ann, Wendy Goodell, Tracey Buckley, Cherie Thomas and Sarah Piermarini both placed, to give Leominster High eleventh place, with 37 teams competing at the First Annual State Championships. ; : J ia ROW 1 (left to right) Bonnie Zepher, Mary Flanagan, Karen Corzine, Debbie Racine, Sally Libhart, Donna Allard ROW 2 (left to right) Cathy Cabana, Wendy Goodell, Cindy McGilvary, Sydney Westphal, Tracy Buckley, Betty Olivier, June Babineau ROW 3 (left to right) Mrs. Buckley, Sarah Piermarini, Kathy Crane, Pam Bergman, Julie Lemieux, Debbie Carriere ROW 4 (left to right) Louise Dube, Jayne Rosa, Colleen Nannery, Mary Lau Hinds, Cherie Thomas, Ann Barnett (captain), Carol Allard IN Petint tks 138 139 BOY’S SWIMMING al i= WwW _ wd “ : yw 2 Ail ROW 1 (left to right) Coach Richard Johnson, Rick Hebert, Charlie Murray, Donald Piermarini, Mike Valeri, Jay Brotheim, Eliot Fienburg, Gary Klein ROW 2: Richie DeCarolis, Peter Lemieux, Robert Gaudet, Paul vom Eigen, Jack Celli, Tom Kline, Kieth vom Eigen ROW 3: James Kilcoyne ABSENT WHEN PICTURE WAS TAKEN: Tom Curran, Craig Brotheim, Doug Lozier, Jim Bartimo 140 141 BOARD UNCE ON BOARD. OF 142 143 HOCKEY To describe the season of the L.H.S. Hockey team without using the word ‘‘disappointing’’ would not really be describ- ing their season. The team started off with a resounding 5-1 victory over Nashoba Regional and followed that up with a 6-4 win over strong Hudson Catholic. It seemed as if the team would repeat last year’s tremendous record. But then disaster struck and they lost many games to teams they should have easily beaten. Out of the next 11 games, they won only 2, and tied 1. This could probably be attributed to many things, but one of the biggest factors was injuries. It seemed as if at every game one or more of the regular players was out with one injury or another. But under the leadership of Coaches Duchesneau and Marano, along with captains Mark Carrier, John Schertell, and Dave Malatos, the team hung on and played their best. With the return of everyone to health, the team gave next year’s fans something to hope for. Leomin- ster won three of their last four games, beating some of the better teams in the league. Also the team com- peted in a new league at Fort Devens and compiled a 3-1 record. Leominster finished a strong record in this Central Massachusetts Indoor Track League only behind powerful Wachusett. The team dropped its first three meets in a row but improved greatly to win its last 7 out of 8 meets. Although this year’s team was hurt by the injury of last year’s top point-getter, Kevin Rich- ards, and through graduation, they still managed to produce a win- ning team. A great amount of credit should be given to these peo- ple who get up at 6:30 AM to practice. Most of the team was composed of juniors and sophomores which promise to provide the team’s effort for the future years. Among the seniors were tri-captains Bill Spacciapoli, Art Caponi, and Mike Peterson. They provided the nucleus of the team and scored many points. Bill Spacciapoli was this year’s top point-getter and set 2 new records in the 50-yard dash in 5.6 seconds and the 40-yard dash in 5.4 seconds. Mike Peterson made the state finals which is a great accomplishment for any runner. Everyone on the team improved greatly and contributed to a winning season. Also praise should go to our coach, Carl Baker, who was willing to get up at 6:30 and to coach us to another great season. fee f “Ait! an 4 pee ’ wee 7 (t es. gam a FRONT ROW (left to right) Ernie Ronney, Bill Spacciapoli, Mike Peterson, Art Caponi, John Nachtway, Fred Mathews MIDDLE ROW (left to right) Tom Marrone, Andy Proos, Pete Hazell, Brian Arbo, lan Jablonski, John Page, Coach Baker BACK ROW (left to right) Richard Horgan, Joe Destadio, Charlie Ciccone, Jeff Karsh 152 L.H.S.
