Your glory is our guiding light; Your nobleness our pride. We raise our voices now in song And send your praise across the sky. You served us faithfully and long; Your spirit shall not die. CHORUS Hail, O Alma Mater, hail to you, Your noble heart forever proud and true. And though the years are dark and long, This will be our song forever more. Cousins Three years ago you approached with hesi- tant steps. You entered and found yourself in a very competitive and challenging situation. At times you faltered, but that desire for achievement persisted. You found that we offered you the opportu- nity to become scholars and leaders, to emu- late good and responsible citizenship along with many very meaningful friendships. Now that you are leaving we sincerely hope and pray that through our efforts you have gained the necessary knowledge to continue in your chosen fields of endeavor. May God bless you all. 20 Vice-Principal John F. Joyce Gratitude is the essence of my message: My thanks to you for what you have brought to our school to make it a better and hap- pier place in which to be and to work; thanks for your integrity, your adaptability, your loyalty, your enthusiasm, and the gift of your friendship. May generous measures of success and happiness be yours in whatever you do, and be assured that my fondest wishes will attend you always. Director of Trade Emile S. Johnson You have spent the past few years in preparation for your future work. Many of you have done outstanding work in both the Shop and Academic classroom. May you continue to work diligently as - you start to work in your chosen field. Many opportunities will be available to you in the industries. Take advantage of these opportu- nities, be diligent and honest in your work and you will advance rapidly. Leominster School Committee: Seated: Superintendent Martin L. Moran, Mayor Ralph W. It is a tradition that the Senior Class play be one of acclaimed dramatic value — the class of 1973 presented Gogol’s, The Inspector General. It is also a tradition that many members of the class be involved in producing this play. That tradition was kept alive when on December 8th and 9th, 1972, the Senior Class play was presented with many members of trade actively involved, members of the football team dancing and many other members of the student body involved in all aspects of this presentation. Thanks to Mrs. Adams, the student directors, the production manager, the actors and you, the tradi- tion of the Senior Class Play was carried on for one more year. The Senior Class is greatly indeb- ted to a fine lady who has received little recognition for her never end- ing devotion and hard work. For the past seven years Mrs. Elsie Adams has been able to bal- ance her teaching, her family, her own dramatic involvement and the senior class play — everyday occurrences when considered singu- larly but a tireless schedule when added together. Mrs. Adams is more than an instructor to her students — she shares her life with her pupils and in turn becomes a trusted and per- sonal friend to those who come in contact with her. One must keep in mind that act- ing is just one small piece included in the machine called theater. Mrs. Adams showed the seniors involved in the play that one must be an expert in lighting, make-up, set design, etc., etc. in order to prod- uce a good play. ° The class of 1973, in recognition of Mrs. Adams’ devotion and hard work present the first copy of the 1973 MAGNET to our special friend. It came to pass that the governing body arranged for a weekend of joyous activity. The cruel winter winds descended upon the valley and forced its people into the kingdom’s great halls, where they amused themselves with athletic and social pastimes, and quenched their thirsts with swigs of royal brew. The weekend was culminated by the crowning of three fair lasses represent- ing each class. Although the winter wonderland lost its sparkling snow, the revelers remained unaffected as they danced gaily into the night. 120 : Sports . ; ue : lbrdclice after practice eae veat. . . determination. Campus. At camp, the squad members began the process of becoming one team — not 2 teams of 11 individuals, but a uni- fied, together team. The Devils started on a win- ning track, beating a confident Newington Conn. team in the first practice game. A few days later they traveled to Montville, Conn. and again defeated the opposition soundly. Then it was back to Leominster to prove to many pessimistic fans that a team with no “Stars” could win. The hard work at Norwich paid off and lead to numerous victories beginning with St. John’s. The Blue Devils traveled to Worcester to defeat them, 28-6. 4° Pemene 15 a Leominster’s next opponent was Nashua. It had been a decade since any L.H.S. team had gone to Nashua and defeated the Granite Staters. By just observing Leominster’s warm-ups, anyone could tell who was going to win. The Devils were so “up” for this they had no trouble handing Nashua with a 30-6 defeat. After the triumph over Nashua, feelings seemed to switch from doubt to confidence. Fans no longer asked, “Can you win?” but “How can Marlboro possibly beat you?” Leominster, however, continued to work hard because they knew Marlboro would be big and tough. It was worth the hard work — Leominster beat Marlboro 23-8. ip 4 : oy We were only kidding — You don’t have bad breath. Coach Hannigan Next came Leominster’s big- gest test, St. Peter’s. At the time both teams were working for number one in the county. Due to the fact that L.H.S. made the fewest mistakes and had a stronger defense, they won, 17- 12. Leominster was now ranked number | in Central Mass. Leominster’s next clash was with Arlington. L.H.S. squeaked out a 14-13 victory when they were able to withstand a last minute goal attempt by Arling- ton. The next game was against Manchester Memorial, a team which hasn’t been beaten since the 1970 season. The Devils defense kept the first half of the game close but in the second half L.H.S. developed fumbleitis and couldn’t control the ball. Manchester won 30-6. 125 All Season Long — It Was a Team Effort ve aa Bete cm Toad We sah Sei) me RRS i 126 After seeing all the praise the girls had for the team, the Blue Devils went out and earned their praise with a hard fought victory over Revere, 21-13. The final game of the season was the traditional ‘““Turkey Day” clash with Fitchburg. The winner of this game was going to play in the post-season bowl game. Fitchburg, however, proved them- selves worthy of this honor as they con- trolled the ball most of the game and won 27-19. The team of ’72 can’t be judged on a win-lose basis becuase they played as a Team — one solid unit — and that was worth more than any win, loss or title. The next Saturday, determined Gardner came to Leominster and controlled the ball for much of the game. Leominster lost to Gardner, 28-20 in a game every- one would rather forget. With two straight losses, the team that came from nowhere seemed to be returning there. The players tried to keep their spirits high as they prepared to face a tough Revere. When the players walked into the locker room they could only stop and stare. A group of girls had taken it upon themselves to show the team how much they meant to them. They had decorated the locker room with posters. Among the secrets of the team’s success was the great balance between offense and defense. Elise Leger led the team in goals scored with 5, followed by Pepper Pothier and Helen Fluet, each with 4 goals to their credit. The Devilettes’ defense, led by Leslie White, Noreen McLaughlin, and Sue Thibodeau, was almost impenetrable, allowing only one goal in the long season. Sehigee Johnson, Jr. and tri-captains Gary Brow, Mike Pavalitis, and Dave District Champs In the few years that soccer has been a varsity sport at Leominster High School, the Blue Devils have established themselves as a formidable foe. Under the coaching of Emile Johnson, Jr., the L.H.S. booters have consistently dominated the area, and this year was no exception as the team produced a spectacular 15-2 record. Under the leadership of tri-captains Dave L’Ecuyer, Mike Pavilaitis, and Gary Brow, the team worked together for a sensational season. Each game was a total team effort. Coach Emile Johnson summed up this year’s team when he stated, “The defense is the back- bone of our team, but the offense always seems to come through when we need the key goals.” The defense this year sparkled as they turned out 10 shutouts, 7 of them consecutive. This record was provided by a strong defense and the out- standing goaltending of Ray Moyen. His 7 con- secutive shutouts and 32 straight periods without a goal scored should stand for many years. At the center of the defense was captain Dave L’Ecuyer who helped coach defense while play- ing center halfback. There isn’t a player with more drive and spirit. Dave was backed by vet- eran fullbacks Glenn Hansen and Jim Mitchell. Valuable halfbacks who filled in the position as needed were Billy and Mike Pananos and Bob Newman. No one can win a game with- out scoring, and in this area Mike Pavilaitis and Gary Brow were sensational. te i a ao id Defense Has 10 Shutouts — a New L.H.S. The services of Tony DiNardo were unfortunately lost early in the season when he tore some ligaments in his ankle, b ut Dicky Freda, Tom McMurray, Kevin Sideleau, and Jim Legere did a fine job of filling in. Everyone worked and played to achieve a winning season, and the example of the seniors has left a high standard to be met by another promising team next year. 133 CT0Ss-COVRITY ished this season with a 3-4 slate. With a limited number of run- ners (twelve were the most running at any one time), the team competed against teams with twenty-five to thirty men. Starting the week before the opening of school, and ending at the beginning of November, the dedicated team of runners ran distances of up to twelve miles per day along the city’s streets and among the hills behind the school. The season started on a cold rainy day in September with a narrow loss to Holy Name on our home courses. Another narrow loss occurred against St. John’s in a run during halftime of our football game there. Next came a thrashing of Athol by our harri- ers in Athol. Now they faced arch-rival Fitchburg on the foe’s home course. Our boys scored a resounding victory. All seven varsity runners finished before Fitchburg’s third man. St. Ber- nard’s next fell to the L.H.S. team before we lost the final two meets to Gardner and Wachusett. The team finished third in the League meet and also ran in the K. of C. race in Worcester, the Wachusett Invitational and the Lunenburg Invitational. The team was led by Pat Wyman who set a new school record of 14:42 over the 2.8 mile course. The high point of the season occurred when our boys whipped Notre Dame 4-2 with junior John McHugh scoring all 4 Leominster goals. This was the first team ever to beat Notre Dame in the third year of league play. The team, led by co-captains Don Tredtin and Ray Richard, boasted some of the leagues top performers. Don Tredtin led the league in scor- ing, and John McHugh led in goals scored. Other high point scorers were Ray Richards, Dave Malatos, and Glen Amico. The defense was one of the best in the area. It was led by Jim Pelo- quin, Mark Carrier, Bob Marquis and Armand Daigle with Al Nutting ably filling in when needed. Roger Richard was one of the best goal tenders around. The team was fly- ing along with scores of 9-2, 5-0, 7-0, 10-2, and a 9-0 win over Gardner. This streak was marred only by a 2-2 tie with Nashoba Regional, a team they were to meet in the Division II semi-finals. In the semi-final game we won a hard fought 3-2 decision and moved into the finals against Notre Dame. Our boys could not put the puck into the net that night. This resulted in a 5-0 loss. The team’s nucleus was made up of 6 experienced seniors who, as underclass players, were able to work at combining their individual talents into a smooth-running machine. Starters Phyllis Levy, Leslie White, and Sue Thibodeau were versa- tile, shinning on both offense and defense. Contributing val- uable support to the team were Betsy Jancaitis and Diane Bangrazi, who often came off the bench to revitalize the efforts of the L.H.S. team. Much can be said about Noreen McLaughlin. She was outstanding in shooting, passing, and rebounding. But just as important as her skill was her strong spirit and her dedication to the game of basketball. Unfortunately, the final record of 6 wins and 7 losses cannot possibly reflect the coaching ability of Margaret Iacoboni, nor the fine skills possessed by the 1972-1973 girls’ basketball team. Outstanding Athlete, Best Female Athlete in School — Women’s Army Corps While the majority of the Leominster High School student body were feeling the pains of Spring Fever, twelve French scholars were preparing for a month of traveling. The month of May marked the initiation of a student exchange pro- gram. between Leominster and Annecy, a city of 60,000 people located on Lake Annecy near the Swiss border. In France, the “etudiants” lived with a French family for three weeks, during which time they absorbed the culture and French language. The last four days of their trip were spent in Paris where the students were able to enjoy the ramifications of speaking French with their ‘families,’ as they tried their linguistic skills on the Frenchmen. The twelve stu- dents will always treasure the friendships they made and the unforgettable expe- riences they encountered. They are especially indeb- ted to Monsieur Rheault for his hard work, encourage- ment and friendship which made this exchange pro- gram possible. You would measure time the measureless and the immeasurable. You would adjust your conduct and even direct the course of your spirit according to hours and seasons. Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing. Yet the timeless in you is aware of life’s timelessness.. And knows that yesterday is but today’s memory and tomorrow is today’s dream. And that that which sings and contemplates in you is still dwelling within the bounds of that first moment which scattered the stars into space. Who among you does not feel that his power to love is boundless? And yet who does not feel that very love, though boundless, encom- passed within the centre of his being, and moving not from love thought to love thought, nor from love deeds to other love deeds? And is not time even as love is, undivided and spaceless? But if in your thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons. And let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing. — Kahlil Gibran Alma Mater Upon the hill you stand upright Against the storm of time and tide. The trust you gave us we shall not forget, For faith can never know regret. The star of truth, symbol of our youth, We praise you, Leominster High.
