Abeut the Author In 1775, when Richard Brinsley Sheridan was twenty-three, he wrote his first play The Rivals. It quickly won him fame that has accounted ever since for half of his celebrity. Sheridan’s purpose was to make fun of the sentimental comedy so popular in England at that time. His heroine, Lydia Languish, would rather elope with a poor ensign than be married in church to a wealthy captain. ‘‘Such erratic behavior was the result of her avid book reading, no doubt!’’ Sheridan created stock theatrical characters such as Sir Anthony, the blustery, bumbling father; Bob Acres, the cowardly fighter; and Sir Lucius, the hearty man-about-town and Irish rogue. All cavort in delightful eighteenth century intrigue. And of course, the parody could not be complete without Mrs. Malaprop and her loquacious attempts at elegance.

Henry Mackenzie The Man of Feeling But young women know so little of the world, especially of the other sex, and such pains are usually taken to deceive them that they are every way unqualified to choose for themselves. Itis impossible to regulate the notions of the human heart, by the cold rules of reason! Elizabeth Griffith The Delicate Distress Letter VIII Parents must be respected by their children, who must pay them external honor and civility; for as love comprises all kinds of honour, so it is an offense against natural decency, to see children bear themselves upon the square with their parents, to answer them rudely, or to be wanting in respect, in looks or gesture, in words or in deeds.
