EXCERPTS FROM LYDIA LANGUISH’S LIBRARY Nor are your females trained to any more useful purpose: they are taught, by the very rewards which their nurses propose for good behavior... that a young woman is a creature to be married; and when they are grown somewhat older, are instructed, that it is the purpose of marriage to have the enjoyment of pin-money and the expectation of a jointure. Henry Mackenzie The Man of Feeling But young women know so little of the world, especially of the other sex, and such pains are usually taken to deceive them that they are every way unqualified to choose for themselves. Mrs. Chapone ‘On the Regulation of the Affections’’ ... the children are to obey, as far as possibly they can, and give up the little objections of fancy to the more mature deliberations of their parents— The Whole Duty of Man Ah, Seymour! Itis impossible to regulate the notions of the human heart, by the cold rules of reason! Elizabeth Griffith The Delicate Distress Letter VIII Parents must be respected by their children, who must pay them external honor and civility; for as love comprises all kinds of honour, so it is an offense against natural decency, to see children bear themselves upon the square with their parents, to answer them rudely, or to be wanting in respect, in looks or gesture, in words or in deeds. The Whole Duty of Man Abeut the Author In 1775, when Richard Brinsley Sheridan was twenty-three, he wrote his first play The Rivals. It quickly won him fame that has accounted ever since for half of his celebrity. Sheridan’s purpose was to make fun of the sentimental comedy so popular in England at that time. His heroine, Lydia Languish, would rather elope with a poor ensign than be married in church to a wealthy captain. ‘‘Such erratic behavior was the result of her avid book reading, no doubt!’’ Sheridan created stock theatrical characters such as Sir Anthony, the blustery, bumbling father; Bob Acres, the cowardly fighter; and Sir Lucius, the hearty man-about-town and Irish rogue. All cavort in delightful eighteenth century intrigue. And of course, the parody could not be complete without Mrs. Malaprop and her loquacious attempts at elegance. His steady devotion and kindly interest have helped make our years here ones of which to be proud. He has given us a stepping stone from which we, as in- dividuals, can build in the world of tomorrow. For this we will always be indebted. With respect and a deep sense of appreciation, we consider it an honor and a privilege to dedicate this yearbook to our Principal, Mr. Aldrich V. Cousins. PRINCIPAL ALDRICH V. COUSINS BK =. heres 5 aoe ai PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE To you, the graduates of the one hundredth and first class from Leominster High School, | offer sincere congratulations. During the first century of its existence our school has seen the world go through many turbulent times. Challenging times are upon us again but we have tried to instill in you the quali- ties of a meaningful and responsible citizenship along with a comprehensive scholastic awareness. May your desires for a better world be reflected in your ca- pacity to understand and respect your fellowman. DIRECTOR OF TRADE EMILE $. JOHNSON Congratulations! You have spent the past few years in preparation for your fu- ture work. Many of you have done outstanding work in both the Shop and Academic classroom. May you continue to work diligently as you start to work in your chosen field. Many op- portunities will be available to you in the industries. Take ad- vantage of these opportunities, be diligent and honest in your work and you will advance rapidly. Best Wishes. Emile S. Johnson Director VICE-PRINCIPAL JOHN F. JOYCE Commencement is the time for high anticipation and for ret- rospective assessment. With you the Class of 1971 | share the hope and confidence that | have observed among you. For, contrary to the prevalent attitude of nihilism among an overpublicized minority of youth, there will be a future, not easy and elysian, but uncertain and demanding. Of this most of you seem to be aware. Most of you seem willing and eager to face this future without fear and without resorting to the escapism prevailing among some of your gen- eration. Looking back over the past three years, | am grateful to you for the many fine attributes you brought to this school to ani- mate your life within it. | have admired your spirit of independ- ence, your balance, your courage to dissent honestly, construc- tively, and democratically, your enthusiasm, your affirmative, realistic and confident outlook, and your retention, without blind conformity, of the basic values in a world presently uncer- tain of its values. | am grateful for the privilege of a friendship with such as you, and you may be sure that my fondest and best wishes at- tend you always wherever you may go and whatever you may do. FOOTBALL The L.H.S. football team under the tutelage of Coach Lean ‘‘Huck’’ Hannigan rolled to a seven and two season. The team was led by its able tri- captains Mike Caisse, Mike Antonucci, and Jim De- Pasquale, who had to sit out the season with an in- jury received in a scrimmage game. The season opened with a heartbreaking loss to Nashua High. Then the team bounced back to win six straight games, including a smashing upset over Arlington High, which had been ranked second in the state. The team concluded the season with an upset vic- tory over Fitchburg. SWIMMING The 1970-71 Leominster High swim team became the first one at L.H.S. to go undefeated since its 1958-59 team. Led by captain, Don Gillis, the team was one of the strongest ever assembled here. Don Gillis shattered his own breaststroke record dropping from a 1.05.8 to a 1.03.4. The Medley Relay of Mike Jacobs, Gillis, Greg Jacobs, and Brad Peavey also broke its own record. With each meet the team became stronger. The big meet of the season was with Holyoke. It had only been beaten once in three years at its home pool. Leominster could taste an undefeated season and came through with a clutch victory over Holyoke. Highly valuable, Ken Albridge broke the rec- ord for most high school career wins with 30. Ken also placed third in the sectional meet and partici- pated in the state tournament. Filling in for sidelined Mike Caisse this year was sophomore Mike Mason. Mike's performance was truly phenomenal for a first year wrestler, and L.H.S. can look forward to his being a contender for the state title. Paul Roger, at 100 pounds, took third place at the sectional meet. And last but not least, how could we forget Dave Dinsmore with those quick pins — 23 sec., 33 sec., and an incredible 8 sec- onds! After weeks of inten- sive conditioning, fundamentals, mastering the offensive plays and defensive tactics, the squad soon turned from a group of talented individuals into a smooth machine under the direction of our versatile coach, Margaret lacoboni. Returning to the courts were five seniors: Cindy Cleaves, Sarah Saunders, Kathy Gerry, Rosalie Bourgeois, and Diane Scorzelli. Underclassmen seeing action for the first time were Lynn Bigelow, Betty Powers, Diane Frechette, Noreen McLaugh- lin, Leslie White, Janice Verelli, and Phyllis Levy. Despite the losing record, the seniors managed to turn in some fine individual efforts. Cindy was always reliable, for un- believably accurate shots from the outside; Sarah was deadly from the outside and the charity stripe. Roe never gave an inch in the battle under the boards. Kathy’s sticky hands provided us with some high over-the-head shots, and Di’s fine passing and floorwork was a valuable part of each game. ‘yore ONIN) es. +48 nh Row One: (Left to Right): Jim Malatos, Mike Catalfano, Dave DiGeronimo, Dan Raher, Jim Flanagan, Mike Bangrazi. BASKETBALL Victory road for the L.H.S. basketball team was hard to come by. The team worked extremely hard to make up for its lack of height and provided many thrills for area fans. Led by co-captains, Dan ‘‘Doorknob’’ Raher and Dave DiGeronimo, the team displayed an aggressive brand of ballplaying. This year Dan blossomed into one of the area's fin- est shooters with a 20 point per game average. Dave was con- sistently fine as a guard, hustling on defense and fastbreaking on offense. Mike ‘‘Bull’’ Catalfano ripped the board getting the rebounds to set the offense in motion or to give his teammates a second try at the hoop. Mike ‘‘Benny’’ Bangrazi pitched in key baskets from way outside with a soft one-hand jumper. Jim Flanagan had the tough assignment of defending against the opposition’s big man. By playing his position perfectly, he was often able to shut off the opposing scorer and get free him- self for some important lay-ups. Also starting was another jun- ior, Jim Malatos. His task was to run the offense which he did quite well. It was a rugged rebuilding year, but it did provide an oppor- tunity for underclassmen to gain valuable experience.
