Count your nights by stars, not shadows, Count your life by smiles, not tears, And with joy on every morning Count your age by friends, not years.” Author Unknown _.. MISS LILLIAN RICKER Miss Ricker has meant so much to us, the class of ’69, as a counselor, a respected adult, and a beloved friend. She has been a staff member at L.H.S. for over 30 years, motivating stu- dents and making them conscious of their own worth. It is a characteristic of the person that she teaches by example rather than by words, teaches pupils rather than subjects, and inspires rather than drives. The concern and interest she shows for the students has made her dean of girls and counselor to the boys as well. Never anticipating recognition, she has unselfishly given of herself, her time, and effort. We feel that she has achieved the ultimate success in life by making others successful. Assistant Principal John F. Joyce As you reach the end of your secondary school years, it may come to you as a startling disclosure and revelation that you have been in effect your own greatest teachers. Like your good parents who have deputized responsibility to them for several hours each day during the past three years, the members of the faculty here have been person ally as well as professionally concerned not just with imparting, but also with shaping and guid- ing—not merely the pouring-in, but, more important, with the leading forth, which is the root meaning in now vanishing Latin of the word “‘‘education.” But if your teachers have pointed out the way—which, as you now know, is never straight and easy—the lessons you have learned, the outlooks you have discerned, the appropriate independence of thinking you are developing, and the values you have acquired and affirmed, have been in the final analysis self-taught. So it is now, and so it will always be throughout your lives. Together we have laid the foundation and erected the framework of the structure. How you complete, adorn, and furnish it will be in accordance with this unending process of self-teaching. My happy association with the Class of 1969 convinces me that individually and as a group you have already learned much of lasting worth besides what was contained in the textbooks. You have already effected a fine balance of idealism with realism. I have few doubts or misgivings about the life and the future that you will make for yourselves and your world. Remember too that graduation is neither a terminal nor a parting. You are and always will be a member of the Leominster High School family, and wherever you go and whatever you do, our loyal and familial pride in you and our affectionate good wishes for you will attend you always. John F. Joyce Assistant Principal Principal Emile S. Johnson Congratulations: You have received from your teachers and school the basics that are necessary to enter industry and the Industrial World. May you continue to work diligently giving an honest hour for a fair wage. Industry is looking for eager and willing young men who desire to learn and advance themselves in an ever changing technological society. May you continue to study in your chosen work so that you may advance and your achievement will bring credit to your School, City, State and Country and your God. Best wishes and Godspeed in your life’s work. Emile S. Johnson Principal Principal Aldrich V. Cousins 4 We who have helped to nurture that intellectual growth, so very necessary in today’s demanding society, proudly feel that our efforts have not been in vain. Your performances in all areas of cultural and physical development bring promise of greater recognition in the future. We who remain behind, who soon will become part of your past, wish you well. Your achievements are the rewards we welcome. Yours is a glorious heritage that recognizes no limits. You: were born and reared in a free society where an education in a free public school system is guaranteed. You are the envy of most of the young people of the world. We who have had a part in preparing you for greater tasks ahead, sincerely hope that you will always be able to say, “T tried to do my best.” Above all we pray that you will carry away with you the lesson we have so earnestly tried to impart to you, that with every right there is an obligation and a responsibility. Your obligation is to earn the respect of your fellow man and serve your country responsibly. SCHOOL MISS CECILE PICKERING School Secretary MISS E. I art Leominster High School has always had a special concern for the development of esthetic appreciation and talent. The art course taught by Mr. Pelletier gives our students a chance to express them- selves in such artistic media as oils, charcoal, and water colors; and to be creative even while learning. 20 music The aim of Mr. Bisceglia’s classes is to give students a better understanding and appreciation of the beauty of music. public speaking Through group discussions, individual speeches, panels, pantomimes, and similar techniques, the public speaking classes headed by Mrs. Elsie Adams learned how to communicate effectively and confidently. industrial arts Students enrolled in the industrial arts course were introduced to a wide range of areas essential in our technical world today. The boys proved their ability in working with tools, materials, and industrial processes. 2 22 science The Science Department, headed by Mr. Michael Cavanaugh, offered a wide range of courses. Fascinating experiments, care- ful research, challenging formulas, and an abundance of avail- able knowledge, made each science class a valuable, enjoyable, and memorable one. math Learning to think means learning to reason. Students are taught to use logic as well as ““cook-book’”’ formulas in the many mathematics courses offered. The able department is headed by Miss Helen Hartnett. 24 social sciences Under the leadership of Mr. John Magan, director of our diversified social studies department, we absorbed the main ideas of American and World History. The basic principles of economics, sociology and human relations were also studied in depth. home economics Under the direction of Miss Mary Louise Cavanaugh, home eco- nomics students spend many hours slaving over hot stoves, learning the finer points of sewing and practicing the etiquette that will be required of them as homemakers. distributive education The Distributive Education course, under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Gottsegan, provided first-hand work experience for students planning to pursue careers in retailing and merchandis- ing. 25 business education The clicking away on adding machines, the clacking of keys on typewriters, and the flip- ping of dictation pads are all familiar sounds of the B. E. Department, which is headed by Mrs. Betty Leonard. In this department students learn the skills necessary in the busi- ness world. ig om E Z 4 physical education Development of a physically and mentally sound body is the goal of the physical education program. Included in the three sessions a week are instructions and _actual participation in seasonal sports, gymnastics, and exercises. 28 auto mechanics Mr. Gilbert, the automotive supervisor, skillfully taught his students to analyze and repair all malfunctions in any make, model and year vehicle manufactured anywhere in the world. The repairs were performed on registered vehicles belonging to the students and to the teachers. aera a oneness RANE LSTA LI FINAL JUDGING worrom avdew Tone Mace | £- ., Taatl Samyri Gavter? test” MOTOR PARTS SERVICE wt frntone ha: Sse : coma mene SS) hae age machine shop The machine shop, headed by Mr. Algedio Membrino, offered the skills of tool and die molding and its related fundamentals. The knowledge the students acquired was also put to practice. electronics The electronic department of the trade school con- ducted a four-year course supervised by Mr. Moryl. The fundamentals and application of the basic direct and alternating current theory were introduced to the freshmen and sophomores. The junior level consisted of basic electronics and applying their knowledge to circuitry, while the senior level was a summarization of their previous three years’ work. drafting related In drafting related the students absorbed the fundamentals and mathematics in- volved in drafting, supervised by Mr. Harrington. The related room was fully equipped for experimenting in stress, elasticity and structure of metal. drafting In the drafting department, under the direc- tion of Mr. Hemingway, the students ac- quired the knowledge pertaining to the basics and complexities of technical drawing. 30 academic week During academic week the daily grind of book learning dragged on. Intensive instruc- tion was given in the fields of English, his- tory, mathematics, and language arts. carpentry The goal of the carpentry course was a preparation for future en- deavors. Mr. Mooney and Mr. Burton taught the freshmen and sophomores the fundamentals of this trade while the juniors and seniors engaged in building a model home. The final phase of the course was conducted by Mr. Geary in his blueprint reading and architectural drawing classes. 3] ‘ : ‘ . ’ B +e ‘ a ‘4 ' ; ee yo , co 4 , yd } { rt y Ams ‘ is $ 4s. i . We were ex- tremely fortunate to have such conscientious and dedicated class advisors. To them we express our deepest gratitude and appreciation. 35 Brian McCarthy Michael Culley PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Seniors—During our final year at Leominster High School, it has been my great honor to act as your rep- resentative in the capacity of president. For this honor, I sincerely thank you. Together, we have performed many tasks and faced many problems. We have suc- ceeded in many situations, but failed in many others. I hope, however, we have learned that accomplishment can be realized only through true concern and involve- ment. If there is but one message which I can leave with you, it is to be concerned in all things in life, for the future of mankind is dependent upon us and our willingness to be involved. 36 Patricia Reed SECRETARY Michael Scaramuzzi TREASURER TRADE OFFICERS left to right Paul Belliveau, Paul Bouchard, Douglas Cormier, James Gaffney PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Class of 1969—Through the past years we have shared a part of our lives which we will treasure forever. For me, they have been most challenging and unique years, which have helped to develop character and wisdom. Allow me to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Class President. In future years we will face new and different problems. Let us always remember that, with truth and determination, we can face the world and all of its problems. Last, but not least, we would like to think of our accom- plishments at Leominster Trade High School as indications that our ability and wisdom have grown so that we may now take our place in the world. Surely then, we can justly say that from our class will come the leaders of the future. The “Snowbound Inn” theme was beautifully carried out with ski posters and miniature sleigh center- pieces. Many lovely couples spent an enjoyable evening dining and dancing, indi- cating that the semi-formal dance is one of the more enjoyable winter activities. 125 Student Council In their preoccupation with their own work, students sometimes forget that they have their own student government. This winter the student council initiated action aimed at making itself a relevant and important aspect of student life at L.H.S. With all of its fine members working together, the council surely will succeed. TEEN ARS ARE ETE TE Magnet Editorial Staff Winter for the Magnet staff meant deadline after deadline and hour after hour of hard work. Arguments flared when sentiments clashed, and at times it seemed as though the Magnet just wouldn’t make it. Winter brought mistakes and regrets aplenty. But it brought more: it brought the one triumph of six people learning to work and think together. 126 Winter Work As the weather became cold and the nights grew longer, the students of L.H.S. moved into a regular winter routine of work and play. Daily the students trooped to school, sat at their desks, and did their work, oblivious to the bitter cold outside. Only record-breaking Northeasters could break the pattern. With schoolwork and with Camelot practices and with the many varied activities that make Leominster High what it is, the students found plenty to do in the winter months. 127 SPORIS... 130 Football Even though the past football season may not have brought L.H.S. a championship, there was a certain pride among the players which helped them overcome their weaknesses and build a winning season. Never considered capable of winning the championship at the beginning of the season, the ‘Devils’ made others recognize them. They were young, inexperienced, and hurt by the loss of some of their best players, yet they never gave up hope no matter the obstacle. The Thanksgiving defeat to Fitchburg was heartbreaking, but, if possible, the team’s great effort should be recognized and remembered. It was a team effort throughout the entire campaign which brought them their success. The memories of the accomplishments of seniors: Phil Carr, Michael Twitch- ell, Thomas Bisol, Tony Piermarini, Kenneth Tucker, Fred Scherer, Randall Haase, Paul Mc- Hugh, Gregg Picucci, Gerald Gravallese, Richard Gaillardet, and the rest of the team should hopefully be remembered for many years to come. Under the brilliant mentorship of coach Emile “Bubsy” John- son, Jr., the team compiled a record of 11-1-1, good enough for the championship of the county and propelling them into State Tournament Play. This was the second championship in as many years of play for the Blue and White. The added year of ex- perience also was evident in State Tournament competition as the team, although losing 3-1, made a strong showing and proved that the caliber of play in this area is rapidly improving. Championship teams are not made by one or two star players and this year’s team was no exception. The all-around offensive play of Co-captain Gus Boucher, Philip Hanno, Dennis Somma, and Peter Grimes, plus the desire and hustle of defensemen, Co-captain Neil Shepard, Dave Marchand, William Rooney, and Micheal Scara- muzzi, all contributed to the, success of the team. From the beginning of the year, great desire drove the team through many tiring practices and games. It was the co-captains’ duty during the exhausting schedule to keep up the team’s morale, and Kip Crowley and Fred Scherer performed their duty admirably. Hustle and durability have been the Devil’s greatest assets. Despite a critt- cal lack of height the team battled its way into the District III semifinals. Only a much taller team from Saint Bernard’s could finally kill the fighting Blue Devils. Coach Damko expressed fully after the Worcester North play-off game the feeling Leominster High has about its team: “The team, by winning tonight, has proved itself not a good team, but a great team.” Varsity Players Francis “Kip” Crowley Fred Scherer Frank McCormack Jeff Hudson Gregg Picucci Thomas Fraturelli Kevin Haverty David Santucci Michael Brown David Campbell Robert Metivier Fred Lussier PCOUIaSte Laue ge a ie) Doherty acai. cre eetecne oan 63 Leominste nara tn 96 IW est DOyIStOn Mei eaten 45 Eeonunsters ne 73 SEM ONES Seta eres tate arse 84 ECOMmINStch weer 78 Ol yg IN ane er ret eee 63 Leominstérs 32. 2 os 65 INaSnUa wera ee ee 62 Pheominstet sre 78 ATO Mee ynneeetels tt eae ae 64 Leominster aie 78 IW ACOUSCtU amet ee ricire 63 Leominstéf. 4. 0. aL Gardner are eee te. 48 eominstéran ee 70 Sten Beriards arene ee 74 Teominsteres a ae 64 INotres Damee. ee ee 42 POMS (Cha ee oe Pitch bute geen tetera 55 LCOMMNStED a rears ee 60 HolyeNamesy cece: actee 66 HCOMinstetme ee er 80 Athol meatier miroir s 83 Reominster ee ae qa Wachusett ............5. 60 Reominstet ame 80 Gardnete: ere eae 40 Leominster ess ae 61 Sie bernards Serze oe eee 68 Leominsteteere eee 79 NotresDameacecre sete 45 COM QStet ee seed 78 Fitchburomeemscesc. eace 100 Leominster: nese 78 Dohertyit ttc. cc sae ee 53 Leominster. ae 67 North Middlesex ......... 57 Leominster........ 67 Wy OfcestOme NON mettre ee 61 Leominster: ee oe 56 St Bernatdse see 2 ee 67 145 147 = Ir - ing sp 2 the sport To brag little, to lose well, To crow gently if in luck, To pay up, to own up, To shut up if beaten, Are the virtues of a sporting man. SUPPLEMENT Camelot The Music Department proudly presented on March 6th, 7th, and 8th, the produc- tion “Camelot,” the legend of a magical land of “might for right’ and the famous triangle of Arthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot which caused its downfall. Congratulations to the hardworking students whose time and effort made this musical a smashing success. “Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot!” n , i Gym Show Annual Speech Finals CONTESTANTS: Glen Nathan, James Poppel Joan McCaffrey, Patricia Hare Anna Gage, Philip Hanno Jane Allen MODERATOR: Bruce Stokes First Place Winner Philip Hanno Second Place Winner Joan McCaffrey Third Place Winner Glen Nathan G.A.A. A rose, like friendship, blossoms and grows. The more petals there are, the lovelier the rose. The sweeter the fragrance, the richer the hue, The greater the friendship is cherished by you. May your rose and your friendship the loveliest be, And remember, one petal blossoms for me. “The Lady” “The Going Thing’ in Fashion And what a “going thing” it was, with pant-suits, mini skirts, and wild colors. Everything was completely mod, from Jane’s dance to Anna and Patty all caged up ready to go. The boys also added a hint of professionalism. Patty and Bob ended the show with a sleepy “good night.” Spring Social The Social is the one event of the year which honors the girls’ mothers. Each senior girl presented her mother with a rose, which is the symbol of G.A.A. The entertainment and the refreshments were terrific, and Patty Linenkemper did a lovely job on the table decorations. 14th Annual Banquet May 28 marked the end for the seniors in Girls’ Athletic Association. They received roses and awards as a final salute to their three years as athletes and friends. The highlight of the evening was when the president, Jane Gorham, received the Outstanding Athlete award. On Saturday Evening, May 24th, the Junior Class presented ““A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Music by Perry Conte and the romantically decorated high school cafeteria, complete with shimmering pink cur- tains and a quaint wooden bridge, made this a night that won't soon be forgotten. ew = ey beers S Meedhel Theme from Romeo and Juliet What is a youth? Impetuous fire. What is a maid? Ice and desire. The world wags on. A rose will bloom. It then will fade. So does a youth. So does the fairest maid. Caper the cape, but sing me the song. Death will come soon to hush us along, sweeter than honey and bitter as gall. Love is a task and it never will pall, sweeter than honey and bitter as gall. Cupid, he rules us all. A rose will bloom. It then will fade. So does a youth; So does the fairest maid. They won eleven matches and lost seven. Brian Mc- Carthy led all area players with sixteen singles victories and only one loss. He also performed well in the State Tournament. Girls’ tennis is a recent addition to the long list of athletics at L.H.S. The team’s season was not marked with outstanding success or victory, but they are gaining experience. This year they learned much under the coach- ing of Mr. Zarmair Shepherd and are look- ing forward to many better seasons. On a warm and sunny June day, the graduates marched together for the last time and received their diplomas. It was a sad but bright June Sunday for parents, students, and teachers. Our class has left much as a legacy during three years at high school. It has been unique in itself, not a class of drudges but a class of free spirit. Our class was not a pop- ular class with the school, it was not a class with steady goals a nd steady achievement. It was not a class with unity and pride. Rather, it was a group of almost 400 individuals, each with his own mind and own ideals. Our class might go far and it might not— either way, the Class of 1969 will be remembered at Leominster High. ar MVuryywyw i 22 23 ‘“Whatsoever Thy Hand Findeth To Do, Do It With Thy Might.”’ ECCLESIASTES 9:10 With graduation, the 1969 Magnet comes to an end. The creating of the yearbook has been a long and stormy task; finishing it is a relief and a pleasure. CHORUS Hail, O Alma Mater, hail to you, Your noble heart, forever proud and true. And though the years are dark and long, This will be our song forever more. The trust you gave us we shall not forget, For faith can never know regret. The star of truth, the symbol of our youth, We praise you, Leominster High.
