Basketball, football, volleyball, and soccer, as well as rigorous workouts on apparatus—all these activities were part of the enthusiastic physical education program. The goal of this program, con- ducted by Mrs. Patricia Pothier and Mr. William Hazell, was to keep all students physically fit and to teach them the value of fair play and good sportsmanship. Home Economics Something was always brewing in Miss Louise Cavanaugh’s home economics class. When they were not slaving over a hot stove, the girls were busy learning the finer points of sewing and the etiquette that will be required of them as homemakers.

Industrial Arts Industrial Arts covered a wide range of areas which are essential in our technical world today. Mr. Robert Anderson and Mr. Leonard Johnson in- structed students to work with the tools, materials, and processes used in industry. Art Dripping paint brushes, splattered easels, and eager faces were all typi- cal sights in room 306. Under the supervision of Mr. Richard Pelletier, students were encouraged to utilize their creative talents. Music Music was always in the air in room 310. Mr. Elgidio Bisceg- lia developed the students’ knowl- edge and appreciation of good music by covering classical as well as contemporary works. Mr. Bisceglia also encouraged stu- dents to participate in the dance band, orchestra, marching band, and vocal groups throughout the year. 24

Business Education The clacking of typewriters and the page-flipping in steno classes were familiar sounds in the B.E. department, which is headed by Mrs. Betty Leonard. Through such courses as bookkeeping, transcription, business law and salesmanship, students learned the skills necessary in the business world. Nursing is an age-old profession, but the nurs- es’ aide program, which worked in collabora- tion with the Fairlawn Nursing Home, was new to L.H.S. In its first year at L.H.S., this course offered students the opportunity to learn the duties of a nurses’ aide while completing their high school year. 26
