Public Speaking Learning to communicate was the main purpose of the public speaking classes headed by Mrs. Elsie Adams. This aim was achieved through group discus- sions, individual speeches, and other class activities such as pan- tomimes. Distributive Education The Distributive Education course provided first-hand work experience for those students planning to pursue careers in retailing and mer- chandising. Under the careful direction of Mrs. Dorothy Gottesgen, students follow an intensive work-study program designed to prepare them for a promising future. 19

English The fear of five-minute speeches, calisthenics with gram- mar, reading literature and writing essays, and the occasional triumphs over torturous outlines—all these composed our daily English classes. This depart- ment, headed by Mr. Eugene Rheault, offered four languages—Latin, French, German, and Ital- ian. The latter three were taught under the ALM programs, which lend enrichment and vitality to each course, their glimpses into the country’s culture, and way of life. 20
