Johnson Congratulations! May you continue to work diligently in the vocation you have chosen. Remember what Benjamin Franklin said—’‘He who hath a trade hath an estate.” Industry is looking for young, energetic and willing workers who will give an hour’s labor for an hour's honest wages. May you uphold the standards that have been set before you. Good luck. Assistant Principal John F. Joyce Because we in education like and work in happy prox- imity to your generation, we are presumed to be authori- ties on your actions and reactions, your opinions and out- looks, your convictions and beliefs, your manners and mores, your aspirations and dreams—in short, we are expected to be thoroughly and conscientiously informed about you and your world. So when your elders ask such questions as “What are young people really like nowadays?” or, more often, “What is wrong with the present younger generation?” my answer must be: “From the privilege of being oc- cassionally allowed insight into their world, | have to say that nothing is wrong with them. They are no worse than we were at the corresponding age. They are, in fact, better. They are far more mature and balanced; they have more solid values. Therefore, let us stop focusing on the minority fringe of social deviates and appreciate the true worth of the ninety-nine per cent whose decen- cies and virtues never make the headlines.” | salute the good class of 1968 as typical of this ninety- nine per cent. | congratulate you on the wealth of your accomplishment up to this time. | am grateful for the promise of your future. | thank you for the inspiration you have afforded my calling during the past three years. | look forward with eager and confident expectation to the world you will make for us. May our paths cross again and often. ‘| | i | i 1] : { ‘ i Principal Charles D. Bird At this particular time in our society many paramount issues are being analyzed and debated. Deeply seated traditions, social mores, protocol and institutions have been and will be revised as a result. You are in the midst of an age where pursuit of the truth plays a grow- ing role. In America, where the pioneer spirit is evidenced with pride, this inquisition is a compliment to the active mind. With this transpiring about us the great emphasis falls upon prudent judgment preferably unscarred by impetuousness, ignorance, immaturity, or other phenome- non unbecoming quality in the decision making process. In the maze of information some biased by incompetency, vested interests, and personal prejudice, it becomes in- creasingly difficult to sort out the facts so necessary in forming an intelligent opinion. The information gathering process is an important one. You, over the past years, have been presented with the method and resources to establish and implement an effective personal program of this type. Be watchful of false or misleading informa- tion, but be appreciative of reliable and valid facts and logic. You will be contributors to the future. Make your mark a positive and truthful one that will stand the test of time. WHO DOESN'T KNOW ... This book is dedicated to a man who is as well liked as he is familiar. In his thirty-four years of service to the school system, he taught English and German for several years; he was advisor for the Senior Class Play for thirty-one years, has been advisor to the Student Cabinet for eleven years, and Assistant Principal for ten years. This record is proof that our affection for and trust in him have not been misplaced. But this man is more than just the list of his accomplishments. He has given generously of his time and effort to the students. He has worked tirelessly for the school. But perhaps most im- portant of all, he always has a smile and a pleasant word for everyone. Under the leadership of Mrs. Florence Far- well, head of the English department, our talents and abilities came to life. 7 + = - aed end. $ Public Speaking Learning to communicate was the main purpose of the public speaking classes headed by Mrs. Elsie Adams. This aim was achieved through group discus- sions, individual speeches, and other class activities such as pan- tomimes. Distributive Education The Distributive Education course provided first-hand work experience for those students planning to pursue careers in retailing and mer- chandising. Under the careful direction of Mrs. Dorothy Gottesgen, students follow an intensive work-study program designed to prepare them for a promising future. 19 INIM il i Peeeeerereeeees PEAR LETICUS ATLA Ta ae ’ $+ ey Excessive study of conjugations, declensions, word order, and vecabulary drills were stressed by the foreign language teachers. This depart- ment, headed by Mr. Eugene Rheault, offered four languages—Latin, French, German, and _Ital- ian. The latter three were taught under the ALM programs, which lend enrichment and vitality to each course, their glimpses into the country’s culture, and way of life. 20 Social Sciences Under the leadership of Mr. John Magane, head of our diversified social studies program, we were exposed to the main ideas of American and world history, the meaning of geography, and the basic principles of economics. Sociology and human relations were also studied in depth. 0 me ese wl neseeuuseretsoes “hp } 2 y | Abeer { Science fa o Le = — = S = (2) o Oo © Ke) 7 =) (o ) £2 2 © o pcs _— —_ o me) = 2) o Ac memorizing plant and animal phyla and wading through the maze of physics formulas. y the science department offered an interest- ing and stimulating variety of courses. Students will long remember tedious hours of repeating Vi experiments 22 Mathematics The quadratic formula, the Pythagorean Theorem, algebraic equations— these were among the ideas and concepts discussed in the mathematics classes which are under the direction of Miss Helen Hartnett, department head. Students were also encouraged to attempt to solve problems by the use of logic and deductive and inductive reasoning. This year calculus was added to the list of mathematics courses for those students who were interested in the exciting field of advanced mathematics. Industrial Arts Industrial Arts covered a wide range of areas which are essential in our technical world today. Mr. Robert Anderson and Mr. Leonard Johnson in- structed students to work with the tools, materials, and processes used in industry. Art Dripping paint brushes, splattered easels, and eager faces were all typi- cal sights in room 306. Under the supervision of Mr. Richard Pelletier, students were encouraged to utilize their creative talents. Music Music was always in the air in room 310. Mr. Elgidio Bisceg- lia developed the students’ knowl- edge and appreciation of good music by covering classical as well as contemporary works. Mr. Bisceglia also encouraged stu- dents to participate in the dance band, orchestra, marching band, and vocal groups throughout the year. 24 Basketball, football, volleyball, and soccer, as well as rigorous workouts on apparatus—all these activities were part of the enthusiastic physical education program. The goal of this program, con- ducted by Mrs. Patricia Pothier and Mr. William Hazell, was to keep all students physically fit and to teach them the value of fair play and good sportsmanship. Home Economics Something was always brewing in Miss Louise Cavanaugh’s home economics class. When they were not slaving over a hot stove, the girls were busy learning the finer points of sewing and the etiquette that will be required of them as homemakers. Business Education The clacking of typewriters and the page-flipping in steno classes were familiar sounds in the B.E. department, which is headed by Mrs. Betty Leonard. Through such courses as bookkeeping, transcription, business law and salesmanship, students learned the skills necessary in the business world. Nursing is an age-old profession, but the nurs- es’ aide program, which worked in collabora- tion with the Fairlawn Nursing Home, was new to L.H.S. In its first year at L.H.S., this course offered students the opportunity to learn the duties of a nurses’ aide while completing their high school year. 26 Auto Mechanics The automotive shop, supervised by Mr. Gilbert, was equipped to analyze and repair all troubles in any make, model, and year vehicle manufactured anywhere in the world. Actual repairs were made on registered vehicles owned by the students and teachers in the school. In the related class, conducted by Mr. Howard Hatch, instructional mate- rial was covered relating to the actual work in the shop. This course covered the operation of various tools and the basic techniques of repair. The main idea was to attain an understanding of the science related to automotive work. 27 Machine Shop The skills of tool and die molding and its related fundamentals were offered in the machine shop under the direction of Mr. Algedio Membrino. The students not only learned the principles of tool and mold building but actually had the opportunity to put their knowledge to work. ESE at RES HYDRAULIC DEPT. Electronics and Hydraulics The electronic and hydraulic department of the trade school conducted a four-year course supervised by Mr. Moryl. The freshmen and sophomores were introduced to the fundamentals and application of the basic direct and alternating current theory. The juniors learned basic electronics and applied their knowledge to circuitry while the seniors summarized their previous three years’ work and studied hydrau- lics. In the related class, conducted by Mr. Felice delGuidice, the theory which was applied in the shop was thoroughly explained. 29 TELELELELEELS Drafting Related In drafting related, supervised by Mr. Harrington, the students learned the fundamentals and mathematics in- volved in drafting. In addition to drafting apparatus, the related room was also equipped for experimenting in stress, elasticity, and structure of metal. mn ™ TEUCEEEREE UREEEE a —_—— —es —— ee a ee a ——— _ —— _ — —se — ee ee ——— —— — _ —— —— es Machine and Tool Design Drafting In the drafting department, under the supervision of Mr. Hemenway, the students were confronted with the basics and complexities of technical drawing. The course covered such aspects of technical drafting as piping, hydraulics, camshafts, and graphs. Carpentry Preparation for the future was the keynote of the carpentry course. Under the careful supervision of Mr. Burton and Mr. Mooney, the fresh- men and sophomores learned the fundamentals of this trade while the juniors and seniors put their knowl- edge to practical use in building a model home. Mr. Geary rounded off the course in his blueprint reading and architectural drawing classes. + ee 4 seas SSESESEST SELES | SS a a Bate ee Trade School’s Academic Week The daily grind of book learning dragged on throughout the week in the academic depart- ment. Before we depart from Leominster High School, our thoughts turn to a particular person. He was a guiding force of our high school careers. This responsibility did not remove him from us; however, for our relationships with him were warm and friendly. As he leaves us, we recall the numerous times we went to him to receive the good news of college board scores, ath- letic awards, and other honors. At other times we came seeking advice and guidance or to straighten out other prob- lems. Finally, we think of the many duties he did for our bene- fit, but without our knowledge or thanks. His contributions to Leominster High School in leadership and encouragement were unnoticed by many of us who benefited most. We want to take this opportunity to say thank you, Mr. Bird, and wish you good luck in your new position. ¢ ions C 2 organiza 86 87 Magnet Editorial Staff hod Nhu SAE ME SEALE EE ENED ABLE DE TE NEALE MA EEE First Row: Anne Cormack, Mark Hanson, Kathy Yule, Ann Salvatore. Af- ter dropping the season opener to a powerful Nashua High eleven, the Devils came roaring back to defeat their next five opponents before being confronted by a strong Gardner team on a dismal day in the Chair City. The hard-fought 0-0 tie game did not weaken the spirits of the Blue Devils, however. The following week they hosted a vis- iting team from Schenectady, N.Y. and handed them a humiliating defeat. But success did not end here. The team came through for coach Hannigan for the third straight year with a rousing defeat of Fitchburg High in the annual Thanksgiving classic. Not soon to be forgotten was the deft ball- handling and expert signal-calling of quarterback Jack Rodriquenz; the strong line support of cen- ter John Ritzo, guard Fran Fontaine, and tackle Chuck Leblanc; the great defensive play of veteran linebacker John Culley; the sensational running of speedster Alan Anderson; and the superb all around play of tackle-end John Hulecki, winner of the Thanksgiving Lane Memorial Trophy for the second straight year for his outstanding play. In addition, these fine seniors received excel- lent support from underclassmen Phil Carr and Nick Bergman on offense, and defensive stand- outs Dave Santucci and Bill Ferzoco. WE WANT VICTORY! Leominster rips through the defense. Their lack of experience was replaced by a will to win .. To say the least, the newest addition to the sports scene was surprising. Despite hard summer workouts and plenty of pre- season practice, a rookie team having a winning season seemed impossible. With cautious optimism, the booters journeyed to Cushing Academy for a pre-season game. The team’s four well-executed goals set a precedent for the year. Seasoned Worcester County teams soon found themselves victims of Leominster’s determination and jarring play. Ron Leves- que foiled shot after shot. Fred Salvatelli and Mike Holohan kept opposition scoring opportunities to a minimum with long boots and hard hitting. Kevin Haverty and Wayne Rosa controlled the sidelines and supplied some good assists. Niel Shepard, center half, rounded out the defense and also respond- ed with some long range scoring punch. Ken Tata and Joe Aratori provided good control and accurate passing in the front lines. The high scoring of Gus Boucher and Mark Han- son supplied the last component for a win- ning team. - Perhaps the season can be summed up by referring to the locker room setting after the final clutch victory over West Boylston. The team was awaiting the outcome of the Narragansett game for if Narragansett were to be defeated, the championship would be ours. Everyone was on edge as Coach John- son walked straight-faced into the room and announced, “Well, boys—WE WON!!!” Why doesn’t everyone just stand there? Freddy drives against Fitchburg 143 BASKETBALL Well, it was not as good a season as last year’s—but it surely wasn’t bad. This seems to be the best way to sum up the L.H.S. basketball season for 1967-1968. Despite some crushing losses incurred by last year’s graduation, the Blue Devils rebounded to a .555 season and had the NCMC basketball league’s top scorer in 6-4 center John Hulecki. In addition to Hulecki’s fine play, the rest of the scoring punch was supplied by teammates Jack Rodriquenz and Kip Crowley. Dave Santucci and Fred Scherer rounded out the starting line-up and were called on at numerous times during the year’s campaign to which they responded with valuable assists and clutch scores. The high point of the season came in the form of a 69-59 end-of-season victory over a Fitchburg High team that had, prior to this meeting, established itself as one of the top basketball powers in the area. Congratulations are again in order for Coach Ted Damko for the fine job he did in keeping Leominster High in the ranks of local basketball powers! Here comes Jackie! Get that ball, Tom. This is how we'll do it. 144 SENIOR INDEX JANET ADAMS “Janet” Sequence III Musical Committee—3 Drama Appreciation Club—2 Chess Club—3 Nurses’ Aide—4 ANGELA AMICO “Ang” Sequence | Spaghetti Supper—3, 4 Interclass Play Committee—4 Junior-Senior Prom Committee—3 Senior Class Play Gymnastic Show—3, 4 Cheerleaders’ Club—3, 4 G.A.A.—3, 4 Leaders’ Club—4 Office Assistant—4 Basketball—2, 3, 4 Softball—2, 3, 4 ANGELO AMICO “Angie” Electronics Ski Club—4 JANE M. The finishing touches in the last minutes before the curtain rises. Wayne and Ken got everything under control. The curtains opened on the Class of 1968’s production of The Crucible, and the audience slipped back to the 17th Century to view one of the most horrifying incidents in America’s history. Arthur Miller’s emotional masterpiece not only provided great entertainment, but brought a timely message to the audience. Written at the height of the notorious McCarthy hearings, The Crucible illus- trates the danger of guilt through association and mass hysteria. The seniors transferred this message from the pages of the script to the stage with all the skill of a pro- fessional cast. Although the entire cast did a splendid job, best acting honors went to James O'Toole and Margaret McDonough. A sirange sicknes. takes Betty Pans, The Crucible will long burn in the hearts and minds of the “Class of 1968.” Goody Proctor is accused ... The townspeople cannot explain the sickness. ... and is summoned to court. Mr. Proctor tries to amend his ways. ... To the terrifying Salem witchtrials The court scene ... the tension crescendos. The bewitched girls sit quietly ... for awhile. The tension breaks. Three months later—the morning of Mr. Proctor’s hanging. A well-earned applause to the entire crew. We stay physically fit .. . The girls play a rugged game. Hup, two, three, four . For the second consecutive year, the Physi- cal education Department presented a gym- nastic show to the public. Coach Hazel and Mrs. Pothier, along with everyone in the department, spent long hours in preparation for the show, hoping the public would have an enjoyable evening and a view of what actually goes on in the gym during school hours. Gayle and Pat perform well. Every year the GAA awards three deserving senior girls the white blazer award for their unyielding enthusiasm and participation in sports throughout their high school years. This year, though, the award couldn’‘t be limited to just three. Although it was hard to select even four girls, the blazers were awarded to Paula Powell, Kathy Buss, Nancy Laprade, and Cathy Papia. And have good times Throughout the year GAA has functions for earn- ing money, and for enjoyment. This spring the club held their annual fashion show, a large success. Also on May lst the annual mother-daughter tea was held in the cafeteria. This function paid tribute to the mothers and also gave everyone a chance to meet the members’ mothers. All the members were invited to Doyle’s camp for food, swimming, and just plain fooling around on June 11th. And last, the final function, the GAA banquet—the time when the seniors were awarded for their service. This year the banquet was held at the Franklin Manor. Bulah performs a hilarious ; : monologue. A perfect evening—a perfect ending to a wonderful year. Angela receives the purple heart—a unique award. Angela accepts the award graciously. They lost a very close game in the final contest in which the tension carried into the bottom of the ninth inning. Outstanding performances were turned in throughout the year by seniors Mike Marchand, Blue Devil pitching ace; John Culley, the catcher of Leominster’s powerful hurling battery; and Ron Le- vesque, a key man on offense and defense.
