ONT ae MBS Se a a Principal Charles D. Bird What do you see as you reflect on the years you have spent preparing for high school graduation? You have gathered an increasing fund of informa- tion from your first grade mastery of the alphabet to the more sophisticated data some studied in sev- eral different languages. Twelve years, one hund- red and eighty days a year, five to six hours a day, were at your disposal to improve your minds and appreciate the culture of the past and present. How efficiently you approached this tremendous opportunity, you know better than anyone else. The time has come to assess what you have gained and to determine the cultural assimilation of the educational wealth you have acquired. This wealth is not to be described only in terms of in- formation gathered. How have you developed as a person between the age of six and eighteen? Have you become a positive influence among your peers? Are you a dependable and reliable human being with a full realization of the meaning of the phrase “concern for others’? Look at your class- mates and see that those who have won your high- est respect have these qualifications: optimism; a determination to make full use of all their abilities; a genuine willingness to serve their fellow students both as a friend and as a member of the class; a humility that is willing to accept a favor, to admit a need for the help of others; a tendency to be complimentary and reassuring rather than critical and destructive. Many of you have these fine qualities. The more of them you have, the better a person you are. A desire, a determination to acquire all of them as the years go by, prove that you have truly gained from your education. We are proud to have joined with your parents in helping you to become a forward- looking, optimistic person, learning and improving forever. Learning is twofold: the gathering of informa- tion, and the using of this information to develop one into a full person.
