Bird What do you see as you reflect on the years you have spent preparing for high school graduation? You have gathered an increasing fund of informa- tion from your first grade mastery of the alphabet to the more sophisticated data some studied in sev- eral different languages. Twelve years, one hund- red and eighty days a year, five to six hours a day, were at your disposal to improve your minds and appreciate the culture of the past and present. How efficiently you approached this tremendous opportunity, you know better than anyone else. The time has come to assess what you have gained and to determine the cultural assimilation of the educational wealth you have acquired. This wealth is not to be described only in terms of in- formation gathered. How have you developed as a person between the age of six and eighteen? Have you become a positive influence among your peers? Are you a dependable and reliable human being with a full realization of the meaning of the phrase “concern for others’? Look at your class- mates and see that those who have won your high- est respect have these qualifications: optimism; a determination to make full use of all their abilities; a genuine willingness to serve their fellow students both as a friend and as a member of the class; a humility that is willing to accept a favor, to admit a need for the help of others; a tendency to be complimentary and reassuring rather than critical and destructive. Many of you have these fine qualities. The more of them you have, the better a person you are. A desire, a determination to acquire all of them as the years go by, prove that you have truly gained from your education. We are proud to have joined with your parents in helping you to become a forward- looking, optimistic person, learning and improving forever. Learning is twofold: the gathering of informa- tion, and the using of this information to develop one into a full person. Assistant Principal John F. Joyce Tee tHEsCLASSSOESI 967 For the priceless gift of your friend- ship and for the opportunities you have given me over the past three years to assuage your sorrows and share in your joys, to bear with you in your defeats and rejoice in your triumphs, and, above all, to experi- ence the excitment of discerning in you the rich promise that bodes so well for the world you will make, my gratitude. “ Principal © Emile S. Johnson a Congratulations! May you continue to study in your chosen field of activit y. Today's technology will change with the new industrial developments of tomor- row. It is imperative, if you want to Stay abreast of the changing times and succeed, that you must study, be honest, and be deligent in your work, roll up your sleeves and be a worker and not a clock watcher. Your future is at stake. What you do now will determine your future. Best wishes. Dedication We, the class of 1967, wish to dedicate this year’s Magnet to three of Leominster High School’s faculty members, Miss Elizabeth Colley, Mr. Henry Fenton, and Mr. Claude Munson, who are retiring this year. Mr. Fenton, head of the Business Education Department, has willingly bestowed both understanding and guidance upon all of his students dur- ing his years at L.H.S. Miss Colley, the present head of the English department, has also given many years of dedicated service to the school. Mr. Munson, the art teacher, will always be remembered for his great talent and the beautiful contribution of our school library’s mural. In appreciation of their outstanding contributions to the teaching staff and their many efforts in our behalf, we extend our gratitude. ee CHP ae : PS ct tt emee ag tern eeenniinn sat anc ii A CASI EIEN LADINO NS School SCHOOL COMMITTEE Seated (left to right), Mrs. Alphon- sine Carluccio, Mrs. Dorothy Ricker, Mayor Ralph W. The success that we have achieved makes me proud to have served as your President. The accomplishments of our class are self- evident. The large percentage of seniors attend- ing schools of higher learning next year is a testimony to our scholastic endeavors. The Class of 1967 has indeed been one of many accomplishments. Only with the advice of our class advisors, Mrs. Simpson and Mr. Rheault and with the help of Mr. Bird, Mr. Joyce, and other faculty members, could we have had such a successful year. It was a decided victory for the students although the score seemed to dispute it. Before the men’s game, the women showed their skill at bas- ketball by challenging the senior girls. Jean Cummings came in second with her speech concerning Project Head Start, and Christione Williams was given an honorable mention for her speech about TV commercials. Winter Carnival February 18, 1967 was the day of the Annual Winter Carnival Ball. Against the background of “Japanese Sunset” couples danced dreamily throughout the evening. The court was chosen by the students from a list of senior girls. Judith Ressequie was chosen Queen. She and her escort Ronald LeBlanc made a lovely royal couple. But for the last few years, the LHS battle cry has been, “Wait until next year.” Well this year, next year finally came. Under the direction of head coach Leon “Huck” Hannigan, a strong Leominster High School football team enjoyed a fine season. The “Blue Devils” posted a near perfect record. After losing the first game to a well- drilled Nashua team, they went on to win their remaining eight contests. Marlboro, Notre Dame, Hudson, Manchester Memorial, Newton South, Gardner, Worcester North and Fitchburg fell in succession. In their nine games, the team exhibited tremendous offensive power. Our attack was spearheaded by the consistently spectacular running of big left half-back, Dave Cote. Dave is considered to be one of the best backs in the state, and will undoubtedly go down as one of Leominster’s all-time greats in the grid sport. Cote’s running ability was ably supplemented by hard-running fullbacks Greg Moniz and Mike Bisol, and our speedy junior wing-back, Alan Anderson. Although we were most effective on the ground, quarterbacks Reed Pelletier and Jack Rodriquenz did some fine passing when called upon. Ends Dick Ward and Jim Valeri made excellent receptions in several crucial situations. Like all successful football teams, the “Blue Devils’ had some fine linemen. Though they rarely made the headlines, co-captain Jim Beaulieu, Mark McCaffrey, John Hulecki, Ron Belliveau, John Ritzo, John Caisse, Dick Gallagher, John Culley, Mike D‘Innocenzo and Selmo Torcoletti opened holes, pass-blocked and played fine defense throughout the season. During the fall, the success of the football team was certainly the main topic of conversation throughout the student body. At the season’s con- clusion, our team was honored with the North Worcester County champion- ship. The team left little doubt that on the football field, “We're number “ur one. But Coach Ted Damko, who seems determined to establish Leominster High as perennial basketball power, once again fielded a classy group of basketball players who more than held their own against some tough opposition. The “Blue Devils” beat every team on their schedule at least once, and lost but three of 18 regular season games. Our biggest scorer this year was Co-captain Dick Armstrong. Dick’s tremendous shooting ability and sure ball handling kept our offense running smoothly all season long. In the backcourt with Armstrong was Co-captain Reed Pelletier. Pel- letier, a good ball handler and steady shooter, proved to be a very able “quarter- back”. The bulk of the team’s rebounding was done by big John Hulecki and center Don-Cranson. In addition to clearing the boards, both Cranson and Hulecki had numerous high scoring games. Dick Tocci, who played well both in the backcourt and underneath the basket, rounded out the starting five. Tocci’s rug- ged and consistent play proved most helpful over the course of the season. Ed Torcoletti and junior Mark Love were the reserves who saw the most action. Both turned in many fine performances. Seniors Bob MacPherson and Jack Picucci were also always ready when needed. Most followers of high school basketball in this area agree that the quality of LHS opposition has not been as high as this year’s in a very long time. Victories over such fine teams as St. John’s are, indeed, an accomplishment. Thus, this year’s impressive record is particularly significant. At the conclusion of the regular season, the team was honored with an invitation to the District 3 Tournament. This basketball season must certainly be considered very successful. 123 SECONDS a. me 3! The invocation was given by Reverend Samuel J. Riggs and followed by the National Anthem. The program included the songs “The Impossible Dream” and ‘Born Free” which were selected and sung by the entire class. Donald Cranson, president of the class of 1967, presented the class gift, an outdoor bulletin board, to Joseph McMilleon, president of the class of 1968. a dl “The American “Collective Labor Movement” Dissent’ Highlighting the program were the essays given by the four highest ranking scholastic seniors. The essayists speaking on “Dissension” were Justine DePasquale, Howard Ringer, Kathleen Underwood, and Simon Tonkin. They treated the topic in a positive light trying to show how dissension, a problem of their time, could be used in a constructive manner. Dick Armstrong Pete Fantozzi MINST poMinsl ONE OMINS) The Leominster High School baseball team under the direction of Mr. William Johnson this year proved to be one of the greatest teams Leominster has ever had. Team cap- tain Don Cranson along with the co-operation of the other diamond dusters Jack Picucci, Paul Fontaine, Mike Marchand, Marty Salvatore, John Culley, Nick Bergman, Roy Levesque, and Greg Picucci worked together to bring home the N.C.M.C.
