“One of the worst mistakes we can make is to sit back and be content with what we have.” This statement summarizes the awareness and concern of Charles David Bird, the new chief administrator of the Leominster Senior High School. Our principal is not only cognizant of the dangers in- volved with contentment, but he is also a firm believer in doing something about them. He is a man with solid plans for the future of Leominster High School. Born in Leominster, Charles Bird began his education at St. Leo’s Grammar School and later attended St. Bernard’s High School where he played football, baseball, and basketball. After graduation he went on to Fitchburg State College where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree. Continuing his education at the Uni- versity of Connecticut, he received his Master of Science Degree. Presently he is with the National Science Foundation Math Institute at Boston College. Between studies, Mr. Bird found time to spend four years with the United States Air Force. Touring much of this country and Europe during these years, Mr. Bird gained much practical knowledge in understanding people. Mr. Bird received his first teaching experience at the senior high school in Groton, Connecticut. He then went to Tewksbury, Massa- chusetts, where he coached baseball, basketball, and cross country. Before coming to Leominster, Mr. Bird spent three years as the principal of the grammar-high school in Whitingham, Vermont. Mr. Bird’s first impression of Leominster was a favorable one. He is particularly impressed with the friendliness, cooperation, and manners of the faculty and student body. Planning for the future, Mr. Bird would like to develop a “stronger, fuller, more enjoyable” curriculum for non-college bound students. He feels that students in all three courses should carry full programs. In this spirit of expansion, Mr. Bird would also like to see a broader program of activities and sports to appeal to the taste and ability of a larger percentage of students. The newly formed cross country team is the first step in expanding the ath- letic program. Mr. Bird would also like to see Leominster High School participate in more scholastic competition such as debates and speech contests. With Mr. Bird at the helm, Leominster High School will continue to expand and improve its scholastic and extra- curricular programs. GREETINGS
