Our principal is not only cognizant of the dangers in- volved with contentment, but he is also a firm believer in doing something about them. He is a man with solid plans for the future of Leominster High School. Born in Leominster, Charles Bird began his education at St. Leo’s Grammar School and later attended St. Bernard’s High School where he played football, baseball, and basketball. After graduation he went on to Fitchburg State College where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree. Continuing his education at the Uni- versity of Connecticut, he received his Master of Science Degree. Presently he is with the National Science Foundation Math Institute at Boston College. Between studies, Mr. Bird found time to spend four years with the United States Air Force. Touring much of this country and Europe during these years, Mr. Bird gained much practical knowledge in understanding people. Mr. Bird received his first teaching experience at the senior high school in Groton, Connecticut. He then went to Tewksbury, Massa- chusetts, where he coached baseball, basketball, and cross country. Before coming to Leominster, Mr. Bird spent three years as the principal of the grammar-high school in Whitingham, Vermont. Mr. Bird’s first impression of Leominster was a favorable one. He is particularly impressed with the friendliness, cooperation, and manners of the faculty and student body. Planning for the future, Mr. Bird would like to develop a “stronger, fuller, more enjoyable” curriculum for non-college bound students. He feels that students in all three courses should carry full programs. In this spirit of expansion, Mr. Bird would also like to see a broader program of activities and sports to appeal to the taste and ability of a larger percentage of students. The newly formed cross country team is the first step in expanding the ath- letic program. Mr. Bird would also like to see Leominster High School participate in more scholastic competition such as debates and speech contests. With Mr. Bird at the helm, Leominster High School will continue to expand and improve its scholastic and extra- curricular programs. GREETINGS With the resignation of Coach ‘Charlie’ Broderick, Leominster had to find a man capable of filling his important position. To find such a man was not an easy task. However, Leominster was very fortunate to procure the services of its present Director of Athletics and football coach. Leon “Huck” Hannigan was born in Leominster and attended Leominster High School. He was graduated from Worcester Academy and Springfield College, and soon afterwards entered the Army where he was a successful foot- ball coach for two years. Following this he attended graduate school at Springfield and was assistant football coach. Between 1957 and 1958, he was a teacher-coach at Newburyport, Massachusetts. From 1958 to 1964, he taught at Vernon Verona Sherrill School in New York and also served as Director of Athletics and Physical Education. His duties included head football and baseball coach. During his six year stay, his teams were very successful. After being appointed to his position in Leominster, Coach Hannigan stated his thoughts on L.H.S.: “I’m very happy to be back in Leominster, and I’m very pleased with the attitude of the boys. Leominster has had a tradition of outstanding athletic performance, and we would hope to continue in that tradition.” 1 pe bh es pa eg AHNLANLTALASTAA| te Hy agri 2 ULTY AND SERRE R CHR: me ADMINISTRATION ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL JOHN F. JOYCE To many students of Leominster High School, the office of John F. Joyce represents both guidance and friendship. Whether the problems they bring with them are personal or academic, they have always found that Mr. Joyce listens with deep insight. Besides his many administrative duties as assistant principal, Mr. Joyce has taken upon himself such duties as the advising of the Senior Class play and the presiding over the Student Cabinet. Over the course of time, the graduating class of 1966 will fondly remember John Joyce, friend and advisor. PRINCIPAL CHARLES D. BIRD The chief executive of Leominster Senior High School is Mr. Charles D. Bird. With a firm hand, he has taken over the very important job of con- tinuing to insure a fine educational program for Leominster High students. He has assumed this responsibility with a keen understanding of adoles- cent problems. When a student takes his troubles to Mr. Bird, he is assured of an attentive audience. Our principal is a fair disciplinarian and remains unbiased in his decisions. Unfortunately, our class will enjoy his leadership for only one year. Nevertheless, the senior class wishes Mr. Bird the best of luck and hopes that other classes for years to come will have the privilege of his guidance. PRINCIPAL EMILE S$. JOHNSON Charged with the administrative chores and personal guidance of the Leominster Trade High School is Principal Emile S. Johnson. In this highly technical age when voca- tional education is increasingly more important, Mr. John- son realizes the need to continually expand and reorganize the vocational program. As the first steps in this direction, he has initiated evening courses at the trade school and a work-study program which enables boys to learn while they work and earn enough money to remain in school. With such aggressive programs, the future years of the trade departments promise to be as productive as the past eleven years under Mr. Johnson’s leadership. SCHOOL MRS. When we leave this building in June we are going to learn the various roles of responsible young adults and Americans. We must face the world and our individual problems with the same courage, the same strength, and the same all-around confidence that have made our class outstanding. This step will be the most extensive change we will experience throughout life. Whether it be directed toward college, industry, the services, or homemaking it will for- ever be backed by the diploma of graduation from Leominster High School in the year of 1966, an im- portant year, a year that will set a standard for future classes—our year. Few of us will forget the athletes, the scholars, and others who made the Class of ‘66 memorable. CLASS ADVISORS We have spent three prosperous years at Leomin- ster High School. As a class we have accomplished many things. The traditional events such as the Spa- ghetti Supper were tremendously successful; the new events we initiated, such as the Interclass Plays, were very well received. We owe the success of these years to many people—the faculty, our officers, and, most of all, our class advisors. Miss Phyllis Bolino and Mr. Michael Cavanaugh have given freely of their time to our class. We owe them a great debt, and they will always hold a special place in our memory. We face the future with considerable excitement and vigor. The future, we realize, is ours, and depending on what we make of it, suc- cess or failure will follow. We will be proud of our successes and may well be depressed by our failures, but we will have to stand up to the problems which confront us and do as well as we can. These truths we have mastered dur- ing the past four years. We would also like to thank our princi- pal, Mr. Emile Johnson, and our advisor, Mr. Spencer Lunan, for their untiring ef- forts in our behalf. Cog- nizant of this fact the fac- ulty of the science de- partment, headed by Mr. Marvin R. Kendall, at- tempts to instill in the stu- dents a knowledge and understanding of scien- tific principles. Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science constitute the curricula of this de- partment. 76 MATHEMATICS Development of the students’ ability to han- dle mathematical ideas and theories, to apply these concepts in solving problems, and to think logically is the aim of the mathematics department, headed by Miss Helen F. Hart- nett. Algebra | and II, plane and solid geom- etry, and trigonometry are the courses of- fered. FOREIGN LANGUAGES The studies of French, German, Italian, and Latin are offered to students wishing to learn and un- derstand the language, literature, and culture of foreign societies. Students are encouraged to join the language clubs which help to supplement these classes. PUBLIC SPEAKING Along with the instruc- tion of basic oratorical skills, Miss E. Lillian Ric- ker attempts to instill in her students the self-con- fidence and poise which are characteristic of an ef- fective speaker. Utilizing the exceptional classroom which is equipped with a miniature stage and spot- lights, Miss Ricker accus- toms the students to the formal and informal at- mospheres that a speaker may meet and creates varied assignments to de- velop the students’ ability to meet any situation. ENGLISH The English department, which comes under the supervision of Miss M. Elizabeth Colley, is re- sponsible for one of the most im- portant aspects of the students’ education. It is in his English class that the student learns to express himself on: paper and understand the ideas of literature. While col- lege English stresses creative writ- ing and the appreciation of great literature, the commercial and general courses instruct the stu- dent in the fundamentals of grammar necessary for clear and concise expression. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION The Business Administration Department, headed by Mr. Henry Fenton, enables students to pursue careers in the business world. Such. subjects as typing, bookkeeping, stenography, business law, salesmanship, transcription, and office practice form a solid foundation for numerous busi- ness opportunities. SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. John A. Magane heads one of the most diversified departments at our school. Social studies includes such subjects as geography, sociology, economics, and world history. One fundamental lesson taught here is good citi- zenship. These and other courses provide students with a knowledgeable background in social sciences that they may apply to later life. The aesthetic side of life is not neglected at our school. Mr. Claude Munson attempts to cultivate students’ artistic talents. In addition to developing individual talents, the art classes contribute to student life. Decorations, posters, and advertisements for extracurricular functions are often provided by art students. Thus, these classes fulfill both individual and school needs. 79 HOME ECONOMICS Miss Louise Cavanaugh, supervisor of home economics, utilizes the most modern cooking and sewing facilities to instruct the girls of Leominster High School in these two important phases of homemak- ing. In addition to developing domestic skills, Miss Cavanaugh hopes to prepare girls to meet the responsibilities of managing a home suc- cessfully and enjoyably. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Excellent facilities make it possible for each student to fulfill his obligation toward physical fitness. Physical education class- es twice each week enable each student to engage in exercise, sports, and other athletic activities under the direction of Mrs. Patricia Pothier, Mr. Leon Hannigan, and Mr. Carmine Picucci. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial arts is an important part of general education for this technological age. Its aim is to teach the tools, materials, processes, products, mechanics, and designs of the major areas of industry. Under the instruction of Mr. Robert Anderson, the students work with wood, metal, electricity and other forms of power, plastics, drafting, and home mechanics such as wiring, plumbing, and masonry. MUSIC The past three years have seen the music department under the di- rection of Mr. Egidio Bisceglia grow in size and quality. Besides de- veloping the students’ knowledge and appreciation of good music, Mr. Bisceglia encourages their own attempts at musical productions. His success has been proven in the staging of two very fine and pro- fessional productions—Bye, Bye Birdie and Li’) Abner—which won the hearty acclaim of both the school and the public. 8] 82 ENGINEERING GRAPHICS The student in this course is required to make a basic study of mathematics and physics in order to recognize the dimensions, angles, and complex transfers of drafting. Once he has completed these studies, the student proceeds to the various areas of drafting. The course draws to a close with the opportunity to apply the draft made in the drawing room to an actual piece of machinery. ELECTRONICS AND HYDRAULICS This course emphasizes mathematics and physics. There is also stress on reading comprehension and the handling of technical equipment. Here stu- dents are prepared to enter the industrial world where automation is rapidly spreading. AUTO MECHANICS The students of automotive mechanics both benefit from their experiences and perform a service to the community as they study and remedy the many complex problems of the automobile engine. Un- der Mr. Clifford Gilbert's care- ful supervision the boys ac- quire the mechanical training and the pride in their work which characterize a success- ful mechanic. MACHINE TOOL DESIGN DRAFTING The students of the trade school are taught the fundamentals of designing machine shop mechanisms. Students must have a good background in advanced mathematics and physics to succeed as machine designers. Boys are given prepara- tion for a drafting career in this course through the study of machine, foundry, and hydraulic practice in the laboratory. scoennocanteeniacaniieciiaed ie cane CARPENTRY i) Nu i! : There are many opportunities for students in the carpentry department. Here they learn design- ing, blueprint reading, and the employment of hand tools and machi ne equipment. Each year students construct a model home wtih the co-opera- tion of the local Carpenters’ Union. The practice, both theoretical and actual, prepares boys for their future occupation. 83 IELTS TNE OT I STUDENT a 84 ORGANIZATIONS 85 MAGNET EDITORIAL STAFF ADVISOR; ee he Pry Seri ba me : etd : ; : ; EDI ORS: David Poppel, Kathy Gordon. November 19, 1965 will long be remembered by many students as the date of the most successful hootenanny ever presented by the French Club. Participants in this event, all hailing from Leominster, all amateurs, and all first- rate performers, included David Poppel, Steven Hitov, Geoff Dimego, and Michael Bedard. There were two groups this year—the Villagers, who made an equally entertaining ap- pearance at last year’s event; and Gail Epstein, Eileen, and Neil Shepard, who added Israeli folk songs to the program. Capitalizing on two Leominster errors the rival defensive unit scored twice in the first half. However, the Blue and White battled back, marching seventy- five yards behind the savage running of co-captain Dave Grossi, Dave Cote and Ralph Wallace. Jackie Rodriquenz took the pigskin the final yard across the goal line on a quarterback sneak, but this was not enough, for although Leominster held the game sta- tistically, points tell the final tale as Gardner well knows. 128 A DETERMINED SQUAD The home field advantage was clearly in evidence at Doyle Field, where the Blue Devils were victorious in each of four encounters, including the all-important Thanksgiving Day classic. With the loyal support of their fans it seemed they could do no wrong. Against a fine Marlboro High eleven Leominster staged an exciting come-from-behind victory, 20-15, with an important third quarter touchdown. Earlier points were tal- lied by Ralph Wallace on a two yard plunge and by Jimmy Nachtwey on a thirty yard pass play from quarterback Rodriquenz. Special credit must also go to backs Mercier and Cote, who repeatedly broke through the Marlboro line to pave the way for victory. Hudson High was the next team to invade Doyle Field and meet a fatal 13-8 blow. This low score belied the superiority of the Leominster eleven who did not allow Hudson to score until the dying moments of the game. Two Blue and White touchdowns, one by Cote and the other on a Mercier tally in the second quarter, were all Leominster needed for its well- earned victory. Emptying his bench throughout the greater part of the action, “Huck” Hannigan coached his team to a 23-0 romp over Worcester North. The Blue Devils struck for three touchdowns in the first half, running through the opposition almost at will. Fullback Ralph Wallace chalked up the first score and was followed across the goal line by Dave Grossi and Dave Cote. NEW HAMPSHIRE Twice during the season the determined Leominster High School Blue Devils ventured across the state line only to run up against impressive New Hampshire squads. Opening the season under the lights at Nashua, Leominster was stunned early in the game by two opposition touchdowns. After these opening moment jitters, however, the team settled down and played a good game. The highlight of the encounter was a sparkling 73 yard jaunt by half- back Dave Cote, who eluded the Nashua defense on a sweep around his left end and hit paydirt. Unfortunately, these efforts were not enough, for at the final whistle Leominster stood on the short end of a 26-6 score. Later in the season Leominster visited unbeaten Manchester Memorial, a team that was, so far, unscored upon. The distinction was short lived, however, as the Blue Devils scored in the first quarter on Greg Moniz’s fullback plunge. After Manchester knotted the score, Dave Cote grabbed the ensuing kickoff and electrifi- ed the crowd with a 98 yard scamper down the sidelines for Leo- minster’s second touchdown of the game. Leominster continued Wbeidotwerda nowieCoach? to dominate action in the third quarter but could not cross the goal line. In the final quarter the Blue Devils saw their fine effort go for naught as Manchester pulled away on two late touch- downs to win by a margin that did not truly indicate the close- ness of the game. The pattern of the game was apparent from the opening moments of play when the Blue Devils recovered a Fitchburg fumble and on the very next play scored on Ralph Wallace’s twenty-four yard scamper. The Leominster defense continued to stymie Fitchburg all morn- ing, while the offensive unit had a field day picking up a total of over four hundred yards. Time after time the Blue and White backs broke away for impressive gains, the longest being Dave Grossi’s forty-five yard end sweep. Another standout, Dave Cote, scored twice while Grossi, his halfback running mate, registered a last quarter tally to make the final score. For Leominster it was a nearly perfectly played contest and a fitting way to end this truly fine season. For their outstanding performances against Fitchburg, Dave Cote, Rocco Candiello, and Ralph Wallace were given special awards at the TAG holi- day dance. Credit here must also be given to those “unsung heroes”, the linemen, Vinny Joseph, John Caisse, Fred Perla, Ray Milton, Dick Gallagher, Lou Giorgi and Jim Nachtwey, who in this game as all season long paved the way for hard-running backs, Grossi, Cote, Wallace, Mercier and Moniz. Roger Pompei with his “talented toe” also deserves recognition for his important contributions to the team’s efforts. Against Brookline, the Blue Devils gave up an opening period touchdown and conversion to the opposition but stopped them cold thereafter. After launching several unsuccessful drives of their own, Leominster finally scored on an intercepted lateral by defensive. lineman, Jim Beaulieu. Now down by a mere two points, they regained possession on a fumble recovery and drove to the Brookline five yard line. With time running out, Roger Pompeii attempted a field goal. Unfortunately this last attempt to achieve a winning margin went wide, ending all hopes of a Leominster victory. In another encounter the Blue Devils played Newton South to a deadlock be- fore losing in the final moments of play 20-14. Dave Cote and Ralph Wallace, each scoring a touchdown, bore the brunt of the offensive attack as they re- peatedly hit the Newton line after taking hand-offs from quarterback Jack Rodrquenz. In posting an impressive 16-2 record the Blue Devils copped the North Central Massachusetts Conference title losing only one of ten league encounters. The only other loss came at the hands of a fine Nashua squad. However, even this defeat was avenged later in the season when Leominster romped to an easy victory on their home court. Each game brought improvement as the players learned to function as one unit and anticipate each other’s moves. Lasting evidence of this great team effort came in the final game of the regular season against arch-rival Fitchburg when they exploded with an impressive show of offensive might and hit over the century mark. A befitting finish to a spectacular season, this game saw each Blue Devil enter the scoring column. Although a post season campaign at the District Three play-offs did not prove as successful, the team continued to play with that same talent and spirit which had seen them into this tournament. Sharp-shoot- ing and good team balance made the charges of Coach Ted Damko nearly un- stoppable. On a given night, any one of them was capable of leading the scor- ing parade, and at the end of the season there was little difference in averages among the starting five. They played unselfishly, often passing off to a team mate in a better position although the shots might have been their own. The squad played a tight defense all season long. Offense alone could not win games if they failed to stop the opposition from scoring. A key factor this Niminyicclladotmie clotcrtrebocnd year was the team’s remarkable depth—any boy was capable of coming off the bench and doing an excellent job against the foes. The new school year of 1965 had hardly begun before the girls invaded the upper half of Doyle Field, brandishing hockey sticks and putting forth the most determined efforts. Yet despite such eagerness, luck would not favor the Leo- minster girls and in each and every encounter of the season they met with heart-breaking defeat. While the Blue and White scores were few and never enough to bring home a victory, the spirited girls were never completely out of the game as they continued to put up a fine defense and keep the opposition tallies small in number. Despite these efforts, the first tilt of the season found the Blue and White unprepared to meet a powerful Athol squad which dealt them a bitter defeat. This unhappy turn of events continued to plaque Leominster’s feminine cagers and saw them drop the next two encounters. Yet even with these added miseries “the Lady’s’’ girls would not give up. Coming on strong in the waning moments of the season, they went on to pound out two decisive victories against their startled Gardner and Marlboro foes. Kathy always plays an aggressive game Athol’s defense just doesn’t seem to bother Nancy 138 MAKE A STRONG COMEBACK Paul battles for the center jump.
