KUCHARSKI Prmclpal The famous American educator Horace Mann once said: A human being is not, in any proper sense, a human being till he is educated. Do not let yourselves be fooled, however, by those charming pictures your admiring relatives take of you in your cap and gown at your high school graduation. A high school diploma is not the label to paste on a finished product of education. A graduation is a commencement-a beginning of the process of becoming edu- cated among other things. Some of you will continue the process of becoming educated in the classrooms of some institution of higher learning. Do not be misled into thinking you have therefore found a pleasant or efficient four year short-cut to becoming Horace Mann's definition of a human being. Think of the experience of the prominent citizen who rebelled at the sight of the great number of courses his son would be expected to take at a certain college. The father sympathized with his son's desire for a quick education. The college president gave them this answer: Certainly he can take a shorter course. It all depends on what he wants to make of himself. When God wants to make an oak He takes twenty years, but He only takes two months to make a squash. How many years must be required to make an educated human being? All the years that a longer life expectancy is bestowing on man by the efforts of those who continually educate themselves-and the rest of us-in the best ways to live and prosper. Keep that goal before you-whether you go to college or not-strive for it con- stantly-that the end of your days may at last find you a human being-educated at last-rich in wisdom. climb if n ' Q 1 - . . l-'saw-f 'Z i f I -an - 1 9 g Gd WK x N l NN W N i H STM MISS LILLIAN RICKER Dean of Women MR. It was formed seven years ago by our physical education teacher, Mrs. Patricia Pothier. The purpose of the club is to as- semble girls with a mutual interest in sports. Among its social activities are the Orange Crush Dance, which is held every year as a rally before the Leominster- Gardner football game, the Holiday Cabaret, which celebrated its fifth anniversary this year, and the Spring Social, which is a mother-daughter tea. The climax of the social year is the G.A.A. Banquet. It is financed by the various fund-raising activities spon- sored by the club throughout the year. Dick Franciose led the Leominster eleven to an 8 to 7 victory over the Purple Knights of Nashua High with his brilliant 49-yard run and two point conver- sion pass. The outstanding defensive play was made by Doug Furbush as he stopped Beaupre on Leomin- ster's 10 yard line. Following the Nashua victory, Leominster played its first home game of the season against Marlboro High. The eleven Broderickmen began to roll in the second quarter, and the game ended in a victory for LHS. The score, Leominster 28, Marlboro 14. Leominster encountered one of her roughest op- ponents of the season when she met the Wealthy Tow- ers of Brookline High on October 7th, In her only loss of the year Leominster scored 6 points, while Brookline claimed the spoils with a total of 24 points. On Saturday, October 14, an undefeated Lynnfield squad clashed with a high-spirited Leominster team. Mazz sparkled on defense as well as offense, catching and blocking passes as he quarterbacked the mighty Blue Devils. Dick Franciose was the number one spark on the offense, hurling two touchdown aerials. Spec- tacular catches were made by Frank Iacaboni and Tyke Mazzaferro. Rogers and Rosbury, making some nice gains, saw plenty of action. Leominster claimed her Amico, Lawrence Ojala, Robert McGee, Jay Love, Gary Flem- ing, Frank L'Etoile, Martin Warner, Harold McHugh, Paul Beauregard, Richard Hebert. Fourth Row: Student Manager Gary White, Irving Hines, Albert Cocci, Philip Marrama, Robert Armstrong, Robert Davis, Robert Howe, Robert Mor- reset, Stanely Bergeron, Assistant Coach Robert Novelli. third victory of the season with the final total Leomin- ster 22, Lynnfield 14. Friday, October 20, brought another victory for LHS in the form of an away game at Manchester Me- morial. The Leominster squad played a fabulous game with the line, particularly Ferrera and Ciprotti, deserv- ing special credit. It was all Leominster and the final score: Leominster 8, Manchester Memorial 6, The date of October 28 produced Leominster's sixth win of the season. Mazz scored two TD's and passed for the third in the 18-0 victory over North Quincy, as he was ably assisted by Moose Valeri, Rogers and Ros- bury in the backfield. In the line it was Jim Ferrera, Jake Ciprotti, Surette, Petricca, Horgan, and Ojala who turned out the best pieces of work. It was Mazzaferro day at Gardner on November 4th as he led the Broderick eleven to a tremendous upset over the Wildcats of Gardner High at Stone Field. The LHS team was in top form as they overthrew the undefeated Gardner team in a 20-7 victory. Franciose caught the Gardner defense off guard with his quick- kick and the line played one of its best games of the season. Mazzaferro, alone with Valeri, Rogers, Ros- bury and Franciose, gave Leominster its twenty-first victory over Gardner. Sammy Valera was outstanding defensively. Dick Franciose and Roger Rosbury led Leominster to its 30 to 8 win over the Polar Bears of Worcester North, backed up by a high-spirited, hard-working team. In the second quarter the Leominster offense be- gan to explode and North could no longer hold down the Blue Devils. Franciose was at the throwing end of some accurate aerials with Dave Valeri and Roger Rosbury receiving. Phil Rocca pounced on a fumble, as did Frank lacaboni later in the game. Norman Fer- rera and Dave Rodriquenz did a terrific job filling in for Mazz at the quarterback spot. Nelson Valeri, along with Rogers, Horgan, and Surrette, turned in excellent defensive performances. But, unquestionably it was the sparkling, aggressive play of Jim Ferrera which helped make this victory over Worcester North such a mighty accomplishment for the L.H.S. linemen. After a long and victorious season the biggest and best game of the year finally arrived. It was a snowy Thanksgiving Day as the Leominster eleven poured out on to Doyle Field ready and eager for the annual conflict. The L.H.S. team performed in high gear with the line and backfield acting like precision parts of an intricate machine. Moose Valeri and Mazzaferro rid- dled the Fitchburg defense as the eleven Broderick- men of Leominster sailed over Fitchburg with a final score of 26-12. It would be impossible to credit individual players with this season of victory. Each member of the team, offensive and defensive, contributed greatly towards making the 1961 Leominster High School football sea- son an unforgettable accomplishment. We are very proud of the combined efforts of Coach Broderick, Coach Novelli, their stafi, and of all the members of this fine football team. L.H.S. The team profited a great deal from its strong senior backing. Ralph Caisse had a good season swim- ming the 160 yard relay, 100-yard breast stroke, and securing a second place at the state meet. Dave Breault proved to be' proficient, participating in the 100-yard butterfly, 160-yard relay, and taking a fifth place in state competition. Also giving the team strong support were Ed Grimley and Bill Briggs, both swimming the 50-yard freestyle with the diving in the capable hands of Jack Hathaway. The juniors were by no means slackers on this year's team. Jeff Johnson was the outstanding junior, setting a new record in the backstroke. Dave Baker did an excellent job in the 200-yard freestyle as did Marc Levine in the 100. Harry Mchugh proved to be a strong contender in the 160-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly. Gary Heline showed excellent form in the diving department, securing many valu- able iirst's and second's, including a second in the state meet. Randy Valencort, outstanding sophomore and high man on the team, swam the 400 and 200 yard free- style. Other good sophomore prospects include, Dick Allardice on the backstroke, Bob Marshall with the breast stroke, and Lee Ricker in the 200 and 400- yard freestyle. A second place was secured in the state meet's 200 yard medley with Johnson swimming the back- stroke, Caisse the breast, Breault handling the butter- fly, and Grimley in the freestyle. Many stu- dents have enrolled in this course to learn more about the automo- tive world. The students have a wide as- sortment of tools, which are used under the direction of their in- structor, Mr. Gilbert. The equip- ment and garage facilities, along with excellent instruction, have made this a very worthwhile and interesting course. The related classes are taught by Mr. Hatch, who gives com- plete coverage of the technical aspects of the trade. The auto- motive industry is expanding and the call for mechanics is in- creasing. The graduates of this course are well suited to fill these positions. 5 CABINET MAKING As we think back, we realize the great amount of knowledge we have gained from our in- structor, Mr. Lunan, during the past four years in the Cabinet Department. The first two years were devoted to the operation and maintenance of power tools, which are most commonly used by cabinet makers. Our junior and senior years in the Cabinet Department were spent making cabinets for houses, private con- cerns, and the Leominster Public Schools. In our related classes, Mr. Lunan taught us blueprint reading and layout drawing. He also taught the mathematics and science which are connected with the trade. The students owe a great deal to Mr. Lunan for the outstanding quality of teaching he has given them. CARPENTRY Carpentry for the freshman and sophomore year at Saxton Trade High School is taught by Mr. Burton. Mr. Burton teaches the new students how to operate all the basic tools a carpenter needs in his trade. The student begins by learning the proper method of sharpening saws and chisels. He must also learn how to manipulate a rule, level and transit. In his junior and senior year the carpentry student advances to the most important part of his training, which is supervised by Mr. Mooney. Work is begun on an outside project, the building of a house. Construction on the house starts in September, and is completed in June. Group par- ticipation in this project is ex- cellent training for the students' professional career. DRAFTING The drafting course offers a well-rounded curriculum in all trades. There is detailed study in mathematics, physics, and the use of a slide rule. Patterns for metal castings made in the Cab- inet Shop are used in the draft- ing lab foundry. All draftsmen must have Machine Shop train- ing as a prerequisite. The main part of the course is drawing. In the first year, em- phasis is placed on manual in- struction in the proper use of in- struments. Later a draftsman be- gins to draw air cylinders, cast- ings, jigs and fixtures, piping, gearing, and welding problems. Before graduation the students create a complete detail and as- sembly drawing of a mold. Saxton Trade has an outstand- ing drafting teacher, Mr. Hem- enway, who spends a great deal of time closely supervising each student's work. MACHINE SHOP The new student begins his machine shop training with Mr. Fontaine. Here he learns the operations and functions of a lathe. He also works with pre- cision instruments such as the micrometer, vernier height gauge, and combination square. In his preliminary training he makes V blades, step blocks, and a tap wrench. This gives the stu- dent an opportunity to become adept in the usage and main- tenance of a drill press, bridge- port, and various types of ma- chines for different job layouts. The student spends the re- mainder of his machine shop training with Mr. Membrino. The building of an injection mold, under the direction of Mr. Bilotta, in his project for the year. With patience and deter- mination the project is com- pleted, leaving the student with v the necessary experience to con- tinue successfully in the field of machine operations.
