It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between school spirit and school tradition because each depends upon the other for its development. As traditions are carried on in a school, students have a greater sense of loyalty toward that school; conversely, as school spirit and loyalty increase, students promote new activities until they too become traditions. While every student has his own individual conception of spirit, most agree that there are certain common characteristics and reflections of school spirit. The support of L. H. S. activities—academic, social, and athletic—indicates the loyalty students feel for their school. For example, the active participation of students in the clubs of their choice is an indicator of both the faculty’s successful efforts to combine learning with pleasure and the student body’s willingness to participate. School clubs and organizations which sponsor social activities can always depend upon support from the majority of students. Everyone at L.H.S. is proud of our fine athletic program. Those who actively participate in sports are joined by those who enthusiastically support our teams. Although we can observe these reflections of school spirit in any L.H.S. activity, the true degree of a school spirit cannot be measured, for ay the loyalty tft students feel for Ww their school lies far deeper than any external sign of loyalty.

Heads huddled together over home- work, a joke shared with a friend, a warm and sincere handshake—— this is the friend- liness of Leominster High School. It makes new friendships and strengthens old ones. It gives directions to a lost sophomore and a push to a stalled car. It overcomes the fears of new students about being accepted by the student body. It enables our teachers to show particular interest in each student by giving freely of their time after school for individual help sessions. By using it our administration, guidance department and faculty amicably, readily and competently handle any problems which arise. Because of it ideas are exchanged, dreams discussed, laughter shared and helping hands extended. Understanding smiles, helping hands and the countless, seemingly unimportant actions that leave a glow in a person’s heart—all are part of the friendliness of Leominster High School.
