WLLL AM 4 38118002233514 ee MEEN EI 1961 MAGNET presents a picture of a year in LEOMINSTER HIGH SCHOOL ana its Spirit ... Friendleness . . . Thas as ats It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between school spirit and school tradition because each depends upon the other for its development. As traditions are carried on in a school, students have a greater sense of loyalty toward that school; conversely, as school spirit and loyalty increase, students promote new activities until they too become traditions. While every student has his own individual conception of spirit, most agree that there are certain common characteristics and reflections of school spirit. The support of L. H. S. activities—academic, social, and athletic—indicates the loyalty students feel for their school. For example, the active participation of students in the clubs of their choice is an indicator of both the faculty’s successful efforts to combine learning with pleasure and the student body’s willingness to participate. School clubs and organizations which sponsor social activities can always depend upon support from the majority of students. Everyone at L.H.S. is proud of our fine athletic program. Those who actively participate in sports are joined by those who enthusiastically support our teams. Although we can observe these reflections of school spirit in any L.H.S. activity, the true degree of a school spirit cannot be measured, for ay the loyalty tft students feel for Ww their school lies far deeper than any external sign of loyalty. ‘ re beag + e 4 ede This zs ats Friendliness... Heads huddled together over home- work, a joke shared with a friend, a warm and sincere handshake—— this is the friend- liness of Leominster High School. It makes new friendships and strengthens old ones. It gives directions to a lost sophomore and a push to a stalled car. It overcomes the fears of new students about being accepted by the student body. It enables our teachers to show particular interest in each student by giving freely of their time after school for individual help sessions. By using it our administration, guidance department and faculty amicably, readily and competently handle any problems which arise. Because of it ideas are exchanged, dreams discussed, laughter shared and helping hands extended. Understanding smiles, helping hands and the countless, seemingly unimportant actions that leave a glow in a person’s heart—all are part of the friendliness of Leominster High School. Thas as ats Tradition 1 EAMINICTER Sj bel VJ INS i Residence OROCLES and the Our school tradition has been the force linking the past to the present and the present to the future. Each class has enriched this tradition by forging a strong tie to which succeeding classes can grasp and enrich. This is the iron of Leominster tradition. Its substance can be found in the Thanksgiving Day crowds, cold but hopeful; the magic of Prom night; the excitement of curtain time at the Senior Play; the pride of Graduation. Our strength has been fired, too, by the spirit of co- operation on the Smorgasbord Supper; the unforgettable moments at the G.A.A. Cabaret; the growing awareness of a new humility at the Senior Reception. We, the graduating class of 1961, are proud that we have added one more link to the chain of Leominster High School Tradition. Our Band and Cheerleaders... L.H.S. Theodore M. Kucharski Principal What shall we say in farewell to young people as we graduate them into the Space Age? Shall we urge you to bend every effort to be the first astronaut to set foot on the moon? Shall we try to inspire you to use your talents in inventing, perfecting, implementing interplanetary rockets and missiles and other such fireworks of outer space? Well, do these things if you want to and have the talent for it. We’ll be proud of any pioneers among you who sail into orbit in the next twenty years. But may we also say that we shall be equally proud to hear in the years to come of those of you who remain with your feet firmly planted on the soil of Earth, for this old planet, on which you have been nourished and educated, on which you have re- spected your parents and worshiped your God and found friends to enjoy life with— this old planet still has plenty of respectable chores for you to do right here at home. While the adventurous cope with the universe, it will be good to have some of you learning to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the shelterless, teach the igno- rant, and raise children of your own so filled with the spirit of loving and serving God and their fellow men that this planet will become so peaceful and lovely a place that no one will want to leave it for the brightest star in the cosmos. Yudrs ¥9, Foceharks iu Class Advisors Miss Mary Addante The class of 1961 is very grateful to its advisors, Miss Mary Addante and Mr. Conrad Geller, for their assistance and understanding during the past three years. The members of the Magnet staff would like to extend every best wish to the graduating class of 1961. It is our hope that this book will help to recall the many pleasant memories you experienced dur- ing your three years at Leominster High School. 13 Mr. Conrad Geller Miss Lillian Ricker Dean of Women Mr. John F. A class of both frightened and assured sophomores made their first appearance at L.H.S. After a fall of hazing by the seniors, Paula Curtin brought the first honors to our class by winning first prize in the Better Speech Contest. We were very proud when several of our boys received letters for various sports. At the end of our sophomore year, we elected the following officers to lead our junior class: Peter Chester—President, William Dululio— Vice President, Donna Ramgren—Secretary, and Esta Schwartz— Treasurer. We also learned that Miss Mary Addante and Mr. Conrad Geller would be our faculty advisors. eae OE — errs cd After a well-deserved summer vacation, we returned to the “‘Hill.”’ Soon after our arrival Beverly Pelletier, Mary Dauphinais, Cindy Erb, Joanne Kennedy, and Sylvia Russo were chosen cheerleaders. Our junior girls brought more recognition to our class by winning the field hockey championship. Our first real class project took place in the spring of 1960 when a smorgasbord supper was held at the Northwest School; it was a great financial and social success. Following tradition we, as juniors, all worked hard organizing the Junior-Senior Prom, Aloha. The tropical decorations were quite unique—palm trees, lawn furniture, and brilliant flowers. Once again, it was election time. After the votes were counted, the representatives for our senior year were William Dululio—President, Donna Ramgren—Vice President, Marlene Perla—Secretary, and Paul Caisse—Treasurer. po oY . Some of our girls had the honor of serving as ushers and flower girls rs Sees! auth on | for the graduating seniors in June, 1960. The year came to an end with an enjoyable outing at Mary Corby’s camp. In the fall of 1960 we returned to L.H.S. for our senior year. For the second year the G.A.A. initiation party for sophomores was held at St. Jean’s Hall, where the main event was a ghost walk for new members. All agreed that it was an enjoyable evening. Our first major project as seniors, was a spaghetti supper, which was held at the Northwest School. The decorations added much to the Italian atmos- phere of the supper. The patrons enjoyed the food, and the class of °61 enjoyed the profits. 60 HISTORY The next major school project was the Better Speech Contest at which Carol Celli brought more honor to our class by winning third prize. The class of ’61 again won the field hockey championship and the girls’ varsity hockey team had an undefeated season. During football season the team showed great spirit and determina- tion in each game they played. The following senior boys were awarded sweaters and letters at a special assembly in January: Donald Kipp, Leo La France, John Boyle, Richard McHugh, George Fiffy, Jimmy Ashe, Curran Hart, Wayne Owen, and Carl Ciprotti. On December 20, 1960, we opened our basketball season in Lunen- berg with a strong victory and hopes for many more. Throughout the season the team showed their fighting spirit and made us very proud of them. The main event of the month of February was the Winter Carnival Ball, Wonderland by Night. This was high-lighted by the grand march, led by the king, John Boyle, and the queen, Joyce Agnew, and their court. When mid-years had been completed, the entire class concentrated their efforts on making a success of the Senior Play. After many weeks of planning and rehearsing the “‘big nights” arrived and the citizens of Leominster enjoyed a memorable performance of She Stoops to Conquer. Our last high school prom, the Junior—Senior Prom, was a beauti- ful event. As we gazed around the dance floor, we noticed that the members of our class not only looked handsome and charming, but seemed older and more mature. Then came the sentimental Senior Reception. As we stood in the re- ceiving line, reminiscing abou t our unforgettable three years at L.H.S., we knew that we were leaving our school, our teachers, and most of all our friends. The last memory shared by the class of 61 was Graduation. While receiving our diplomas, we couldn’t help wondering what the future held in store for us. 61 Most Likely To Succeed Elaine Amorosi Peter Tocci Best Dressed Lelia Fratturelli Paul Caisse Best All Around Beverly Pelletier Armand Millette Best Dancers Lisa Saladini Peter Chester Class Leaders Donna Ramgren William Dululio Most Talented — —— Class Wit Carolyn Surina a . “oa ' Marilyn Marino John Rossbach . ¢, fax iv Robert Del Guidice Ballot Best Looking 4 é ‘ i Most Athletic Sally Ricker _ Paula Curtin Frank Scherer 5 _ f John Boyle Nicest Smile Sally Luck Dennis Cataleta RRP RIE OR a sates Most Intelligent Kailie Uong William O’Toole a. aa ee See eear = = Most Dependable Judith Lillie Peter Proietti Most Collegiate Friendliest Ginny Marchetti Joyce Wheeler Wayne Owen Jimmy Ashe a SS) Pex. = YL nV Q, x — ) 5) So ,O0 ina) Carol Johnson George Fiffy 64 G.A.A. Our Officers % ae? fe og a Secretary—John Linde President—Allen Harding Vice President—Dennis Kirouac Treasurer—Richard Stacy 1961 o7 Auto Mechanics The Automotive Mechanics course was initiated at Saxton Trade High School by Mr. Emile Johnson in 1958. This course has given many interested students an opportunity to learn about the automotive industry. Our automotive facilities enable the students to per- form the necessary shop work and gain valuable, prac- tical experience. The number of students in this course has been stead- ily increasing. Much of this growth can be credited to the department’s two fine instructors, Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Hatch. It is our hope that more students will participate in this excellent automotive mechanics course in future years. © is } i _ i 2 2 2 = Cabinet In the Cabinet department Mr. Luman, the instruc- tor, teaches the correct use of tools to first year students. During the sophomore year students become ac- quainted with those power tools which are most com- monly used by professional cabinet makers. Junior year activities are concerned with practical experience in building several types of cabinets. Later, during their senior year, cabinets are built for Leominster public schools and occasionally for private concerns. EOIN a a ae ite Carpentry This year as in the past, the Carpentry department performed the task of building a new house. At first the boys go through the shop to learn the fundamentals of the trade, as taught by Mr. Burton. This training continues for two years until they reach their junior year, when they are permitted to assist with work on the house. During their senior year they under- take the entire responsibility of constructing a house under the direction of Mr. Mooney, their instructor. This house-building program was initiated in 1955. Thus far six citizens of Leominster are enjoying fine homes constructed for them by the carpentry students of Saxton Trade High School, and at present a seventh house is under construction. Drafting In the drafting course, boys learn the basic funda- mentals of drafting as first year students. During their sophomore and senior years they are taught how to work out drawing problems. These problems include drawing isometric views and revolutions as well as prob- lems in piping and welding. As seniors they are assigned to the new drafting tables. There they gain experience in solving all types of engineering problems. The schedule for this last year includes the designing of punches, dies, cutting tools, precision tools and gauges. Machine Shop In the Machine shop boys are taught by Mr. Fon- taine for the first two years. He teaches them the proper use and maintenance of different machinery. The stu- dents learn to operate and make different pieces of equipment used in machinery work. They learn to read different tools such as micrometers, and verna height gauges. As juniors, under the supervision of Mr. Membrino, they are taught to design and make parts of molds. After graduation many boys become employed by local industry since there is a constant demand in the Leominster area for skilled machinists. Marlene and Paul are pitching in too, Improving our class by helping me and you. We came up from junior high frustrated but set, But after Junior Week we were initiated and wet! For being a sophomore we had to pay By carrying back some senior’s dirty lunch tray. “Will you marry me, honey,” was a common phrase, “Happy Birthday,” “I love you,” were parts of the craze. As juniors our role of the underdog ended We studied, stayed home and our marks were just splendid! We booed cocky sophomores and yelled for neat tricks, We helped all the seniors to their wagons fix. Our Smorgasbord Supper was really the most We juniors at L.H.S. could then really boast. As seniors now our days are numbered Through the halls of L.H.S. our voices have thundered. Our supper was great and our play stupendous, Our records and deeds will always defend us. Classmates and friends, make final preparation For soon it will be here, our Graduation. The greatest example of com- bined class spirit, friendliness, and tradition appeared in the 58th senior class production, “She Stoops to Conquer.” It was this extravaganza that caused most of the class of 1961 to vol- untarily give their best effort to a Class function. Many months of planning and working went into the prepara- tion of this theatrical project. In November the dates of the per- formances were chosen by fac- ulty director, John Joyce; pro- duction manager, Peter Proietti; co-directors, Elaine Amorosi and Kathy Preziosi; and_ technical director, Richard Stacy. Then came the long process for the production staff of reading and selecting plays for the class to vote on. When the play was chosen, all interested seniors de- cided the way in which they wanted to contribute to the play. After two nerve-wracking aft- | ernoons of tryouts, the produc- tion staff met at the home of Mr. Joyce to cast the actors in roles which would best benefit the play and to select the all impor-| tant behind-the-scene people. During the remaining days of February and the entire month of March, the cast rehearsed at ] the high school auditorium. All those who took part in these nightly sessions can never forget § the fun involved with the merry- | making at the Three Pigeons Inn, Kate and Marlow’s chair scene, or the pursuit of the bar- maid. Soon show week arrived with all its hustle and hectic last min- ute arrangements. Dress rehears- als were held, scenery was at last put on stage, and tickets were nearly sold out. Everything was ready for opening night. Anyone who had anything to do | with the success of the play ex- perienced the satisfying and mixed feelings of joy and sadness that went along with the closing curtain of “She Stoops to Con- quer.” In appreciation for his inval- uable assistance, at the close of the second performance, the class of 1961 presented Mr. John Joyce with a plaque hon- oring his 25th anniversary as faculty director of the Leomins- ter High School senior play. Girls’ Athletic Association. . . Spring Social The Second Annual Spring Social was held by the Girls’ Athletic Association on May 3, 1961. This gathering is lim- ited to the girls and their mothers. It gives the mothers a chance to meet the girls and see for themselves how each girl respects the Association and every- thing it stands for. The girls are also proud to introduce their mothers to the other guests. Entertainment was furnished by the members, and petit-fours, tea, and coffee were served to the guests. The Spring Social is just another of the many wonderful activities the Girls’ Ath- letic Association sponsored during the course of the school year. Annual Banquet Sr a at ts ay © VAngaauapeteinl ES of { Fig se a . meet th gas se os , ¢ Throughout the entire year the mem- bers of G.A.A. work hard trying to im- prove their athletic abilities, learning how to work with others, and most of all, learning how to be “fair and square” during competition. The Association rec- ognizes the efforts put in by each mem- ber and at the close of each year rewards the girls with a cherished banquet. The banquet is the summary of the past year’s hard work. For each and ev- ery member it puts a finishing touch on the year gone by. The banquet, to a sophomore, is ex- citing and is a new experience. To a jun- ior, it means the loss of senior pals. To a senior, the banquet marks the beginning of all new things to come. Through the three years, the senior G.A.A. girls learn and use many of the qualities needed for success in life. Those qualities are ever present for each and every girl in G.A.A. and she is encouraged to take them and use them wisely. Girls’ Softball 1961 June 16, 1961 Reception A feeling of sadness, a feeling of happiness, a feeling of reluctance —the class of ’61 was experiencing one of the most difficult, yet most wonderful moments of its high school years—Senior Reception. Warm handshakes, friendly greetings, sparkling smiles, a few tear- drops, and wishes of luck, happiness, and success were all part of this memorable evening. For most seniors this was not the end of three happy years at L.H.S. but the beginning of many sunny days ahead in which dreams will be fulfilled and memories restored. 13 wisest ’ = : - 2 Risavise de srityy Seem aaennenemaaedmmanetin! —— eteetitit came canteen umm aa al 4 Se PT Py Se Fe i VS a fas Noe ge 2 ag jeo-pad ; 7 + ai gf .:! ao r ie i 4 _ ' (ee ‘ i 3 a4 1 : ae Y 4 cy ; e] Bhi : ' ‘ af ; 4 i . om ss Low ta' 4 . 1 Mrs. John R.
