We hope you will treasure ithn 2 ioe a to it often. We extend our best wishes to the graduating cla iia ee ks ae + aE OT Sere tye ts le Unc O0 S Sk essaqe We have graduated many fine classes from Leominster High School. We were perhaps proud of each of them for a different reason. Although every fine class makes a good scholastic record, some classes have more than their share of people who do un usually well in their academic work. Some classes produce unforgettable athletes or undefeated teams that make local sports history. Some classes display more dramatic talent than usual. For all of these specialties, be- yond the usual expected performance of duty, we remember our graduates. This year’s class commends itself in its own way to our warm remembrance. You began your senior year in an overcrowded building. You had to adjust in your senior year to the new, longer school day. Some of the pleasant things of former years like weekly assemblies, Thursday morning sings, rallies every Friday in the assembly hall— these you had to forego because of circumstances beyond anyone's control. Yet you plunged in and did your daily work, continued all worthwhile class activities, and refrained from spoiling the year with individual or organized complaints about things you were bright enough to realize could not be reme- died. We salute you as being the kind of people meant in a line of verse we always agreed with: ‘The man worth- while is the man who can smile when everything goes dead wrong.” ‘Take the same attitude throughout your lives to- ward the pin-pricks of inconvenience and concentrate your energies on bigger things. endear ty, Focharcoki We the Class of ‘60 proudly dedicate our year- book to two teachers who have passed away this year. We shall never forget the faithful guidance and un- derstanding given to us by B e OnRLQ YN Mrs. Miriam Bucknell, the head of the language de- partment, and by Mr. Ever- ett Donnelly, the head of the social science depart- ment. The class of 1960 wishes to thank our Class Advis- ors, Mrs. Mary Wallace and Mr. John Magane, for the guidance and _ encourage- ment they have given us during our high school years. They have given freely of their own time to make our class projects suc- cessful. GIs istory In September of 1957, we the class of ’60, made our first appearance on the hill. As sophomores, we were filled with mixed emotions, the fear of being dif- ferent from everyone else and the happiness in the anticipation of the three wonderful years that lay ahead of us. We were very proud that some of our boys made the varsity teams of football, basketball, swimming, track, and baseball. Our girls, too, were representing us in such sports as field hockey, basket- ball, and softball. A year of catering to the seniors was coming to a close in the spring of 58 when we elected our Junior Class Officers. They were: President Charles Wheeler, Vice President Kenneth Baldwin, Secretary Anne Gately, and Treasurer Peter Seaver. After a well-deserved summer vacation, we entered L.H.S. for the second year. We were soon recognized by the rest of the school when five of our girls were selected as cheerleaders. These girls were Gail Breau, Linda Cormier, Barbara Davis, Rita Lattanzio, and Sheila Rocca. For the second time we returned from our Christ- mas vacation to face mid-year examinations. We sur- vived this ordeal only to start our first big project, the Junior Class Spaghetti Supper. Although it involved much work, it was very successful. In April our thoughts turned to “Spring Fantasy,” the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom. As Juniors, we took an active part in the planning and enjoyment of the event. Again, election time was nearing. Our representa- tives this year were: President Charles Wheeler, Vice President Kenneth Baldwin, Secretary Catherine Greco, Treasurer Peter Seaver, As is the usual custom, the members of our class took part in planning the graduation at Doyle Field. Some of our girls served as usherettes at the reception, while others held the honor of being flower girls at the exercise. The boys of our class gave much of their time to preparing the field for the seniors. Having wished the seniors the best of luck, we settled down to our last week of school that year. Our final class event was the Junior Class Outing which proved to be enjoyable for all who at- tended. We marked the end of an interesting and memorable junior year on Saturday, the 20th of June. Our last day of school was a unique one because this was the first time we have ever had to make up a school day on Saturday. We returned to L.H.S. in September of 1959, with every intention of making our senior year a memora- ble one. Proudly, many of the boys represented our class on the starting lineup of the football team. The girls, too, made a good showing in sports by complet- ing the first undefeated season in field hockey. At this time all the seniors participated in the an- nual spaghetti supper. Our profit was greater than that of any class in previous years. With high spirits our football team brought glory to L.H.S. in the last and most important game of the season. A definite underdog, the team managed to hold a 0-0 deadlock with Fitchburg. This was certainly a moral victory for Leominster after having spent many hours practicing and scrimmaging. The annual Thanksgiving Dance at City Hall ended this victori- ous day. On December 15, the L.H.S. basketball team offi- cially opened their season playing against Lunenburg with hopes for another successful season. The team showed their fighting spirit all during the season. Los- ing a few games only made them work harder to cor- rect their mistakes. Our thoughts then turned to our long awaited Christmas vacation. In the midst of this festive holi- day, the G.A.A. sponsored the annual “Holiday Caba- ret.” This dance -was the highlight of our winter vaca- tion. The month of February brings to mind the Winter Carnival with its election of a king and queen. In 1960 the honors went to Caroline Cross and Robert Tellier, along with the members of their court, Bar- bara Davis, Ronald Lamothe, Karen DeCarolis, Ray- mond Bunnell, Sharon Morey, Kenneth Baldwin, Edith Poultney, and David Brown. The king and queen led the grand march, one of the highlights of the evening. After completing mid-year exams, the actors and actresses turned to the Senior Play. This play was a smashing hit. The most beautiful event of the year is the Junior- Senior Prom. All the couples were dressed in fluffy gowns and dress suits. We realized that this was our last high school prom and we made it a most enjoya- ble one. Our last year was drawing to a close with our Senior Reception. This was a sentimental event for many, because we hated to leave our beloved school, teach- ers, and most of all our friends. With our lovely flower girls leading the procession, we, the class of ’60, marched to our graduation. In front of all our friends and relatives, we received our diplomas. This marked the end of our three wonderful years at L.H.S. that will remain forever in our memory. i) a 11 ! 3 $x e Veachens’ MOST POPULAR MOST HELPFUL MOST CHEERFUL NICEST SMILE MOST COURTEOUS MOST WITTY MOST ATHLETIC MOST DEPENDABLE -MOST INTELLECTUAL MOST COLLEGIATE MOST TALENTED FRIENDLIEST wre 0 Miss Ricker Miss Forte Miss Chenette Miss Colley Miss Hartnett Miss Ruh Mrs. Pothier Mrs. Wallace Miss Earl Miss Pizzuti Miss Driscoll Mrs. Farwell . Emile Johnson, Director of Sax- ton Trade High School, initiated the Automotive Mechanics Course. The introduction of this course gave the many interested students a splendid opportunity to learn about the automotive industry. Tools and equipment are being purchased as needed. The facilities leased and bought, give students the necessary shop and _ practical experience. It is hoped that many students will take advantage of this vastly expanding industry. In the two years that the auto mechanic department has been in operation, the number of students is increasing rapidly. Due to the fact that the department is com- paratively new, most of the aca- demic seniors are returning for Post-Graduate instruction. This will enable them to be better quali- fied mechanics. , 7 ee teen “, be tin 84] — a exe ie his Shop Looking back on the years spent in the Cabinet Department, I now realize the amount of knowledge we have acquired. It all started in 1956 when we arrived at Saxton Trade High School, where we met Mr. Lunan, our instructor. The correct usage of tools was the main project for the first year. During our sophomore year our main interest was learning how to operate the power tools which are the most commonly used among cabinet makers. “Let’s go,” that was Mr. Lunan keeping us from losing precious time. In our junior year we were fair craftsmen and made the cabinets for the house built by the carpen- try shop. We are now seniors, and are kept busy building cabinets for the Leominster public school, and occasionally for private concerns. Mr. Lunan also taught our re- lated classes. Blueprint reading was interesting, but drawing layouts was a little harder. He also taught us the math, and science related to our trade, It seems like yesterday when we came but now we are experienced cabinet makers. BEAUTIFUL CABINET-- BOT WHERE'S THE DOOR ? 108 Carpentry Department In 1956 we enrolled at S.T.H.S., where new thrills and experiences awaited us. We walked into our newly appointed shop, curious about everything. Then came the seniors, grinning and smiling with an evil look in their eyes. The next few weeks were busily spent polish- ing cars and getting sky hooks at lunch time. We finally found out what the evil look in their eyes meant. After returning from. a_ well- earned vacation, we, as sophomores, were eager to learn more about our trade. ‘The seniors were busy break- ing in a crew of new freshmen, leaving us free to listen carefully as Mr. Burton taught us the funda- mentals of carpentry and proper use of our tools. We were proud of our work, because it was dlis- played in many schools in the city. When we became juniors we were privileged to be working on a new house, the one thing all freshmen and sophomores look forward to. We also were pleased with the ar- rival of a new teacher, Mr. Mooney, who instructed us in the proper methods of building a house. Our senior year finally arrived in September of 1959 and we took over the operation of the carpentry shop. We were the foremen at this year’s new house. “—— WHERE Do we Drafting Department Looking back four years, I can clearly picture in my mind that bright September morning in the fall of 1956. It was the beginning of my High School and Vocational training at the Saxton Trade High School. We walked up the steps and through the door, where we were confronted by signs pointing in all directions. —The one we wanted pointed to the second floor. Climbing to the second floor, I kept wondering how it would be in high school. I soon found out! We were staring through the par- tial glass door, at a panorama never before seen by any of us. Mr. Hen- enway the instructor, seeing us, in- vited us in. He explained how the freshman year was devoted to learn- ing the basics of drafting. Our sophomore year was more interesting. We _ were learning quickly, and our progress was rapid. Our drawing problems in- cluded drawing cams and gears, as well as problems in piping and welding. With our progress and the rapid passing of time our junior year presented more and compli- cated problems. We had two years of experience now, and were called upon to make drawings for parts to be made by other departments in the school. The curriculum called for drawings of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, along with jigs and fixtures. As I look back over my senior year I recall many pleasant memo- ries. We were now “old hands” and were assigned to the new draft- ing arms. This put us in our glory, as far as we were concerned, it solved all of our engineering prob- lems. The schedule that year in- cluded the designing of punches and dies, cutting tools, and gauges. wet, rm on CRAFTSMAN we err ABSENTMINDED Machine Shop The bus stopped, the driver turned slowly and said “All off for the Saxton High School.” We looked at each other and stepped off the bus. While we were begin- ning to catch our breath, the bell rang and we were rushed in our new department. The sign above the floor said, Machine, Tool, and Die Making. There standing to meet us, clad in grey overalls was Armand Fon- taine. He was to be our instructor during our first two years. His first words were, “Gum belongs in the waste paper basket” and “Hands out of your pockets.” Our freshman and sophomore years were spent in learning the fundamentals of machinery and its proper usage. In our junior year we worked on special projects for outside firms. Some of these included machining V-blocks and tap wrenches. It was finally here, our senior and final year at Saxton Trade High School. Algidio Membrino now took us under his guidance. In our few re- maining months he taught us how to design molds. We worked on projects such as making molds for a windshield scraper with finger grips; also the puzzles and triangles given away at Open House in May. Well, it is all over and time to graduate. Some of us will return for a P.G. course; the rest will go out and fill the need of industry. WHAT poEsS A TEACHER KNOW} Pp elit Department “The sample making course in Plastics presents you, the student, with advanced problems in devel- oping plastic materials into a countless number of products.” These were the first words spoken to us in September of 1956. We soon became aware that there were many different compositions of plastic materials. Our four years at Saxton Trade School were filled with curiosity and a fascination for the problems posed by the plastics industry. With the acquisition of new skills and a fluent understanding of the terms and expressions used in plastic sample making, we were ready to face the demands of the public from industry.
