IUNIOR HISTORY In the fall of 19.38 thirty six freshmen Nended the1r way toward Leo High School Evervone was happv as it was the first day of their high school career They plucked up courage and went upstalrs and took the first vacant seats in the assembly After a few davs of getting acquainted they elected class officers Lester Smith was chosen president Maxine Halter x1Ce president Wilma Wolfe secretary treasurer and Mr Crate Beck class sponsor The social act1v1t1es of the year were two class part1es the first one was held at the home of 1 Cora Shears 1n October the last one vxas March 24 ln the gymnasium Five members of the freshman class were basketball plavers on the second team In the fall of 1939 the class entered as sophomores and continued the Journey New officers were elected MISS Audrev Beerbower and Mr Omer Fisher were the captalns Wllma Wolfe was the gulde her assistant was Lester Smith and Gavlord Widner was secretary treasurer A few members thought the oasis much n1cer than Journeylng through the desert so they decided to dlscontlnue their schoollng Four new members l0ll'16d the band making a company of thirty seven The first class party was held at the home of Norma and Maynard Savage in October and a vuener roast was the b1g feature of the evening The sophomore class was represented in all tx pes of act1v1t1es Gavlord Wldner and Richard Melchi play ed basketball on the first team and helped win the county tourney Lester Smlth entered the Golden Gloves Tournament and advanced to the semi finals where he lost Two plavs were presented for the Farmers Institute by the sophomores The girls gave the plav M1SCh1GXOUS Mattie and A Fat Chance To Get Th1n was presented bi the boys A kids partv was held in the spring The class of 42 returned after x acatlon prlmed for a successful Junior year and ready to start the th1rd incessant battle against the obstacles of knowledge Nommatlons open for class officers and sponsors' This remark was heard durlng the first week of school Results of the election were Lester Smith presldent Gavlord Widner vlce president Helen Parker secretarv treasurer Miss Frances Ream and Mr Hubert Davis were selected class sponsors A scax enger hunt was the outstanding feature of the first class party held at Sav ages O tober 11 The girls wcn the softball tourney by defeating the seniors Gaylord Wldner Rlchard Melchl and Kenneth 'VIaxfield were three members from the jumor class vt ho were on the first team Lester Smith was in the Golden Gloves Tour nament again and was put out 1n the seml final round W1ll1am H Ho ler left our class in November and Joined the navy Junior Lantz moved to Harlan and later Robert Dehnert mox ed to Hoagland Dottx and Daffy was the Junior plav which was presented February 4 and 5 under the direction of Miss Ream Sldes vsere chosen to sell tickets and the los1ng side enter talned the winners A repeat performance of the play was glven at St Joseph Central School February 19 The last events of the year were a class party and a receptlon honoring the sen1ors The Juniors haxe one more year in which to make their work and efforts stand out Upon their retu n nest fall much success is wlshed upon them everyone of them A patriotic receptlon honoring the seniors was given at the Y W C A 1n Ft Wayne on Thursday ex emng May 1 Teachers and school Of'DC18lS who appeared on the program were the Messrs Kelro Whiteman Jess Gerig Paul Harding Hubert Davis Robert Wahllg Lester Smith presldent of the Junior class acted as master of ceremonies '21 l ' ' - ' X ' r , 7 7 - V .
