We choose which are to be acceptable in today's social status. When a student entered his junior year, he would have to take U.S. History. And as the student entered his history class, he heard a man speak, and his name was Richard F. Davido. His students at the time would never have imagined that they would learn something more in addition to U. S . History, some- thing that would aid them for the rest of their lives. If they watched closely as he talked in phrases interspersed with frequent coughs, they could not help but wonder why. Some wanted to feel sorrow, yet there was no sorrow in this man's face. There was a quick glance from his eyes, as though he knew his own inner thoughts as well as ours. Most of us sat in amazement and some were even g and teach after being informed two years previously that he was living on borrowed time. Most of our minds were filled with questions about the nature of this man. Why is he still loyal to his school and his profession? Why does he keep returning after several blood transfusions, and days of intensive care? We may take a pessimistic view at this, as we searched for the answer. Yet the answer for us was right in front of us! It was a small piece of paper hanging on the board with a lot of other papers, and it read: When the going gets tough, the tough get oin Yes, Mr. Davido was tou h, tou h as a varsit football coach and tou h as a teacher. He was a man that could not turn 8 8 8 Y 8 his back on an thin , not even his illness. Y 8 Now it was clear then, you see, in o back. filled with hauntin thoughtsg how could this man sit so calmly in a chair rder to succeed in life, whatever it may be, you must strive to keep going and never turn Surely his experience with Leo High School should have displayed the true spirit of our school: DEEDS NOT WORDS . 'JV I , K Jw 33 f And the foe shall feel the Lion ,S night, And the spirit of our teams attack. , a w 1 N FOOTBALL The football team in 1974 started out full of hope . It was basically a Senior team that had no where to go, but up. True, they did make the playoffs, but everyone, including the players and coaches themselves expected a lot more. It started on a sunshine drenched Sunday afternoon at Gately Stadium when the seasoned Lions trampled Loyola 22-0. The absence of Rich Davido had their inspiration on them . The following Saturday night against Mendel, the Lions again posted a shutout, this time by a 24-0 score. The experienced Lions were flying. But they were not experienced enough in winning. The following Sunday at Lane Tech Stadium, the Lions fell victim to a fired Gordon Tech. Leading 12-0 after three quarters, the task before the Lions was to stop a powerful Gordon aerial attack. They could not meet the challenge. With only waning minutes left in the game, Gordon's All-American quarterback, Steve Dietz, led the Gordon Tech Rams to a thrilling victory by a close score of 14-12. The Lions were never the same after that. The Lions let up against St. Laurence the following by giving up 46 points. Surely the Lions slide would stop against St. Rita . But it didn't. Another last second loss. This time a last second field goal doomed the Lions. The last three games of the year the Lions defeated DeLaSalle and Mt. Carmel very easily to squeak into the playoffs. The playoffs, the second season. Leo went against a tough Br. Rice Squad and lost by a score of 24-8. A sad end for a team that showed so much promise. ' ' ' U, 1 - :Bl? Their first game was played against vergreen Park at their home stadium. After a hard fought game the Frosh-Soph team of Evergreen lost to our Freshman team hen our Freshman team played the sophomore team of Bogan and again we won. Then at the Gordon Tech game our freshmen eld them to a tie game. After a surprising start the team started to go into a slump. Due to many factors such as injuries, sufficient amount of coaches and others the team steadily went in a downward direction. Yet, this was not due to the fact that ey were poor players, for they tried and gave their 100014: but fate seemed to be against them. With continued hard work and actice these men will be the Varsity team of Leo's future , and it appears that they may be a good team due to their spirit and etermination . ., ik ,. 1' RESHMAN FOOTBALL: fLeft to Right, Standingj Mr. Donne1IanCCoachJ, W. Under the superb coaching of Brother Casey, the Sea Lions battled their way to get the first three wins the team has seen in six years. Outstanding performances were given by Captain Dave Leslie and seniors Dan Stecich, Harold Potts, and Tim Kelly. Juniors Jim Shine, John Knightly, Derrick Gaines, and Dave Opelka showed through their fine ability that they will make a fine team next season. Sophomore Leroy Huggs showed all the beginnings of an all-star goalie and will be a fine asset for next year's team. Freshmen Wellington Kendall and Ed Figel will also be a great help to next year's team. Congratulations are in order for Brother Casey in showing us what a fine team he put together. 112 rf, -. Mr. Byrne coached both the varsity and I .V. teams. Mr. Byrne spent many hours after school getting his teams into shape. There was a good turnout considering that this is the first year in a long while, and the wrestlers learned fast under the fine coaching of Mr. Byrne. New uniforms and new mats were bought with the financial help of the students who attended an intrasquad meet in our gymnasium. Two of the better wrestlers were Gary Nelson and Bill Moss who unfortunately will not be back for next year's season, but there will still be a good number of wrestlers who will be coming back to make this sport continue to bring pride to Leo. However, even after a season that would be disheartening to anyone else, Mr. Larry Zywica, who coached the team this year, is looking forward to next season. Mr. Zywica, who had help from Mr. Gartland in coaching, said he is looking forward to fine performances next year from Dave Cheval, Brian Briody, Bob Hughes, Mike Fox, John Ohde and especially Art Kerr, who was the team's most valuable player and was elected an athlete on the Catholic League All Star Team . Since this was their first year they did have some trouble, but the coaches are working hard to iron out these difficulties. Because it is a club team, not a varsity sport, the members of the team had to pay a fee to be on the team. They held a semi-successful fund raising drive, in which the team mem- bers sold league stickers in order to pay for much-needed equipment. So they evidently are a dedicated group of guys partaking in a tough sport, and all one can say is - Wait 'till next year! A . By beati Luther South to advance to the semi-finals of the Quigley sectional, the Lions retained their pride. It was a dismal year seniors. Marvin Tunstall, John McEr1ean and Jim Barista. After being on a winner every year, they would wind up their hig school career on a loser. Coach Mike Collins, in his first year at the helm of the Lions tried his very best to make Leo a winner despite continu defections of seniors. After all this, next year's team has gained some valuable experience. Juniors Mark Gizowski, Dt Knight, Fred Carter and Terry Sandifer polished their skills in basketball to a degree that they should breeze through next ye with no problem . Chalk it up as a year for experience's sake, not as a winner. The ball just would not bounce for the Lions. Hard luck bes them most of the year. After going through their exhibition season at . 500 , the Lions fell to opponents by being on the short el of a close game. Next year's edge in experience should be the key to another Leo Basketball crown. L50 LEU LEU L 0 tw E3 44 L , a T LEU dj I LE0 . Mr. Topa took over the bowling team last year so this is his second year as a coach. This year's team was somewhat like last year's team, unproductive and unnoticed. There were a few good bowlers, b as a whole, they just cou1dn't put it together. Next year's 1976 team should be something to look forward to, since there is onl one Senior on the team this year, Thermon Royster. The Frosh-Soph Bowlers are greater in number than the Varsity so this sho that the next teams for a few years should get progressively better. The 1974 Homecoming festivities once again proved to be most enjoyable for everyone involved. By midweek the spirit rolling high and the traditional Leo feeling was alive and kicking throughout the student body. Banners of all sorts were in making and ready for Homecoming Thursday when they would be accompanied by the colorful orange and black streamers. Thursday was really when the high-spirited feelings were ready to burst. That night a group of 20-30 enthusiastic s sacrificed their sleep to decorate the gym and halls with bright, colorful streamers. The tunes of the 50's and 60's rang tl out the building and they helped keep the students hoppin' throughout the night. Breaktime came for these physically students around 1:30 Friday morning yet the fun and excitement was yet to be continued. Senior, Joe Tucker, modestly posed a few photographers and a small size fan club but as the second picture was shot, disbelief and shock filled the hall as one of tht dear Brothers mysteriously appeared down the gloomy path and , as the ORIOLE stated ole Joe was caught with his pants down.' This nevertheless did not put a damper on things and by Friday morning's first period all was ready for the pep-rally. The rally was once again, enthusiasm carried a very positive attitude. The student body vigorously cheered throughout tha whole assembly. Our musical wizards and wonderfully talented cheerleaders led the crowd in singing the school fight song ans all cheers. Letterman Club President, Dave McLaughlin, was the emcee for the day and introduced the Varsity team whicl hopefully for the first time in four years would walk off the field the next day victorious. Yet for the fourth straight year disappointment was the only thing we found as Brother Rice defeated our team. Even the disap- pointment of the loss though did not silence Sunday night. Once again the students were alive and dancing to the music of Brat Spankin. The night, along with the whole week, proved to be a great success and was enjoyed by all. 150 gl f FE .
