MONDAY - THURSDAY - FRIDAY - SATURDAY CITY RECREATION CENTER 80 CLASS PROPH ECY Hurrying home one afternoon from my job as fashion magazine editor in New York City I was startled by this sign: jameJ Haymakerhr famous symphony orchestra now appearing. There were pictures of Dick and several other old school- mates of mine-Reba Winkler, joanna Klutz, Billie Sue Prertwood and Norma Bean. The guest stars were Mary Lih Smtt and judy Arrington. Seeing them made me realize what a difference 10 years could make. I'd flown up to Canada to see jo Ann Crirp who was married and now living there but it had been a long time since I'd seen any of the class of '52. Of course I'd seen jimmy Dingler, Barbara Hunt and Gary Everhard! on T.V. and had heard Vivian jenkinr at the Met. and I'd read Pinky Hank: best seller, To The Woods. Now I de- cided to visit Dick after the concert and catch up on the news. Sitting in the dark concert hall I thought of the letters from home. Carolyn Leftwirh, new princi- pal, had written me all about L.H.S. Mr. Lentz had become superintendent with Gwen Huntley and Gwen Thompron as his secretaries, Alta Rohinron was teaching Frenchg Marilyn H edrirk was the per- sonnel advisor, Diane Huntley had succeeded Mrs. Trivetteg jan Melton was the girls' phys. ed. teacher, and Hillard Underdouzn and joe Cook were coaching the football team while Paul Berk had the baseball team. jarkie Biggerrtayf had written that Caroline Wil- ron, Mae Ann Blalork and Margie johnron were with her on the nursing staff at the Memorial Hos- pital run by Drs. Charlet fChuckj Lore and Henry Gaither and that joe Smith was living on Miller Hill. After the stirring performance I rushed back stage to talk to Dick, He was overjoyed to see me, and we began discussing our old classmates. We discovered that many of them were right here in the city. Eddie Bynum was now editor of the New York Times with Doug Tolbert as photog- rapher, Bohhy Clark as sports' editor, jim Childerr as movie editor, and Dorothy and Carrie Wall, Dirk Rohhinr and Mavir Smith as reporters. jim Sherrill was drawing a comic strip, and there were several of the girls working as office secretariesg Genoife Tuttle, jeanette MeDade, Gayle Melton, Betty jo Stout, and Mary Sunzpter. I told Dick that I had hired Phylliu Sherrill as model and Eugene Moore as artist for my maga- zine. Lora Ann Carver, now famous interior dec- orator, was doing a series of living room arrange- ments. Nanry Hood and Franrer Clifton were working in the office, Loif Lawing was writing the features and jean P. Clippard, the home-life de- partment. Dick had been in Lenoir recently and reported that Sarah Greer's husband john Noll now had a chain of Thrift grocery stores. Ralph Walrh, Thomaf Warren and Sidney Barlow were manag- ing his stores, and john Clontz had Charley Harlem' and Bohhy Hardin helping him in the meat de- partment. joan Nelron Triplett, Franref Warren, Barhara Lovin: and Peggy Carrwell, all married, bought their groceries there. Hark Carpenter? wife sent him there for groceries since she couldn't get away from their eight children. After we had talked for awhile we dicided to go around the corner to Lee Una Wrighfr cafe for a cup of coffee. We noticed that Reita Ehrd was CLASS PROPHECY appearing there with her chorus girls including Mary Hawkinr, and foanne Crottr, so we stayed for the show. On the table was a milk carton from Earl Aurtin'r dairy. While we were sitting there a red-haired gentle- man strode up to our table. We immediately rec- ognized him. It was foe Alexander, the new head of the F.B.I. He told us he had as his helpers Peggy Ann Sberrill, Celia Rarb, fuanita Price and Eddie Poteat. He also said that the F.B.I. was having some trouble with the famous pool-room operators Robert Srnitb, Donald Kirby, and jorepb Wilton for tax evasion. He said the F.B.I. had asked two state patrolmen, David Haigler, now married to Gena Fairef, and Neal Withers, and two famous chemists, Ann Tirnanur and jack Forler, to help. We asked the news from home, and he told us that jarnef lVil.fon, ferry Crump, and Torn Suddretb now had their own filling sta- tionsg that Nancy Moore and Betty Crottr were running a beauty parlorg Gordon Carpenter was a Vetinerian. Maxine Cojey was running the book- storeg Carolyn Barlow, the North Poleg Benton Melton was managing Belk'sg Bobby Suddretb, a furniture store, and Bob Laws, an upholstering shop. He also said that Bob Holrrlaw and Em now had their own little home. As we left each other, our thoughts turned back to those good old days of '51 and '52 in L.H.S. and all our friends. H. S., our thoughts drift back twelve years ago when we were entering the first grade in 1939. Few of us realized that we were beginning the most important phases and the best years of our lives. We began our school careers by learning the A, B, Cs, reading, writing, and arithmetic. It was new and hard for us but we loved going to school and meeting so many other boys and girls. But the years passed swiftly and we were in the sixth grade. Excited about our sixth grade graduation, we dreamed of the day Lenoir High School doors would open to us for the first time. The thought of going to the High School build- ing as junior High Students thrilled many of us. We met new peo le and made new friends. Dividing into smalf? intimate groups, we shared our secrets and experiences with these friends. But another thrill was yet to come. We were going to be pioneers in our eighth year, we were going to be eighth graders at the new junior High School. And pioneers we were! For many days we trudged up the muddy, sometimes icy, hill to the old, brick building once again alive with the activity of young people. We felt superior because we were seniors, the first graduating class of the new Junior High School. All of us remember marching down the aisle, dressed in white, going onto the stage, receiving our diplomas, knowing we were actually growing up. We were on our way to the glamorous world of Senior High School. When 1 for the second time in our school careersj we entered the High School, we realized it was different. We began our Freshman year feel- ing lost as we hurried about the halls trying to find our classes. It didn't take long, though, for us to get used to the routine which combined work and fun. We admired the upper classmen because they looked so cool and sure of themselves while we were striving to be somebody. In our sophomore year changes took place in our lives as High School students. Many of us became members of school clubs and organiza- tions, others found themselves interested, and prospective stars, in the field of sports. We can never forget our football team's winning the con- ference championship that year as well as the next two years. We had done our share, too, because our sophomore voices helped create those cheers coming from the sidelines that led them to that victory. As juniors we began thinking of the future, not only in terms of schools and colleges, but in terms of our life-long careers. We pllanned the junior-Senior Prom and Banquet wit much en- thusiasm. This was our first big social and we would remember it for years to come. When our junior year ended, we began to feel a deeper sense of loyalty and spirit for our school. Then the day arrived, the day we had looked forward to and dreamed of. XVe were seniors- the Class of '52, Yet we weren't so happy, certainly not as happy as we had pictured ourselves. It was as if we were trying to grasp each day and hold to it. Before we knew it, we were excited over another, and our last, Junior-Senior. We were planning a very important Class Day. How could it pass so uickly? It seems like only yesterday that we entered the first grade, and now here we sit at our graduation, waiting patiently to receive our diplomas. After this night we will never again feel the same excitement and pride as we sing our school Alma Mater. Never again will we take those dreaded trips to the ofhce, never again share our secrets and experiments in school. The tears well in our eyes as we think over past years. Are they tears of happiness or tears of sadness? Are we happy because the long road has come to an end? Are we sad because our friends will go one way- we another, to face the world? Some will be in the Armed Forces fighting to keep this country free so our children will have the privileges we had. Others will have the privileges we had. Others will remain at home to make their places in the social and business world. Wherever we go, whatever we do we will try our best, using the tools given us in our student days of childhood and youth-leadership, character, ability, and knowledge.
