It would be impossible to mention and to show all the parti- cipants in the athletic events-the students who spend their time serving the school-the students who enjoyed the dances, picnics, and assemblies-and last those who sacrifice other things to pur- sue academic achievements. To you the students of Leilehua High School we have developed our theme---STUDENT LIFE. l W: 1 0 x L' A its is ' , .ft get 5 ,M in mba., s,,. W'! Y 5 MRS. FLORENCE IWANAGA Clerk-Typist Ka Leilehua 1956 is dedicated to two deserving people who make up the staff of our school -Mrs. Elizabeth Kamida and Mrs. Florence Iwanaga. The former, being the school secretary, and the latter being the clerk typist, have given much devoted service to the teachers and stu- dents alike. To us as students, Mrs. Kamida and Mrs. Iwanaga have always been devoted friends, always mindful of our welfare despite their innumerable tasks and problems in the office. Teachers have also found them ever willing to their own needs. Their personal interests in us and to the teachers, lead us to extend an affectionate Aloha as well as a sincere and highly- deserved well done for the school year 1955-1956. Many students as these three have learned the duties of an office worker through the two secretaries. MRS. E. KAMIDA MRS. F. TWANAGA 1 4--g 1-ni A 5 i ' . Along with the help of the students, the Council also received much valued assistance from Miss Barbara Kim. To keep up with the constantly increasing enrollment of the school, new clubs were formed at the beginning of the school year. One of the clubs called the Pep club was organized to help promote school spirit. Pep talks, given by various committee chairmen, were also given. Another club, the junior Debaters Club, was organized and recognized to help promote debating. Many other activities were undertaken by the Intermediate section this-year. By careful and thoughtful planning they were able to put on a successful Aloha Day Assembly. Another of our notable accomplishments was performed when the Council purchased 100 new lockers to be used by the Intermediate Students. The Council also undertook the planning of more -socials. The Leilehua Sentinel staff under the capable , guidance of Mrs. Ryan, was composed of 20 members. The staff was headed by June Shimabuku, editor Yoshida, Charlene Chun, Clifford Wong, page editors. Much credit goes to the staff members, for their splendid cooperation and work. Visits by the staff were made to the McKinley Printing Dept. so that they might understand all phases of publishing. Various members have attended the Student Council of Oahu Publications QSCOOPJ where they exchanged ideas and made recommenda- tions in order to publish a better newspaper to the interest of the student. 7- 7.14 This group was composed of boys who were interested in developing good leadership. By attending the Leadership Training Conference early in the year they learned the rules of parliamentary procedure. The James Dole Chapter of Leile- hua will remember their enjoyable events of the year as a Christmas Party, the Territorial Convention, an assembly during F. F. The -42 members of the club busily made scrapbooks and brought in various articles from Mexico, the Latin-American countries and had them exhibited in the school office for the student body to see. It is the purpose of the club to learn and promote the Spanish language and S amd culture. One way they achieved this was putting on skits in Spanish. On January the club initiated the first year Spanish students. The initiates were gaily dressed in native costumes of Mexico and found speaking Spanish all day mn nzfzclio gusto. The breaking of the Pinata during the Christmas party and singing of Spanish songs highlighted the social event for 1955. udx F .gl i T gl . 2 A I W I M E. Abear V. Aquado D. Buencosejo H. Recalling the happy years that were spent at Leilehua, we turn these pages and see all our fellow classmates who, after receiving their diplomas, will go out into the world seeking their specific goals. In appreciation, the Seniors extend their heartfelt thanks to their advisors: Miss Mytle Tobey, Mrs. Marion D. Tolbert, Mrs. Helen Schiller, Mrs. Amelia Ryan, Miss Yit Moi Lau, and Mr. Lammy Ching, who have made their year truly wonderful. In early March, the Senior Picnic was held down at Haleiwa. The Banquet followed in May, marking another enjoyable gather- ing for the graduates. The class Day program on May 16 includ- ed the Alumni Luncheon and the Tree Planning Ceremony. Enjoying all the scheduled activities, the Seniors hardly realiz- ed the coming of june, when the Baccaulaureate Service and Commencement Exercises concluded their eventful year. Harmo- niously singing the Alma Mater the class of '56, both happy and sad, were graduated. Yes, with their motto: Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You , they now face the world, ready to tackle the difficult tasks lying ahead of them. Advisor, MISS M. SMITHE Coach JOHN PARK Assistant 7mdaze FOOTBALL ENJOYED a banner year in the Rural Inter- scholastic League in 1955 with six teams playing a solid 10- week schedule. Financially wise too, it was the best in the 16-year history of 'the circuit. The big reason for this success at the turnstiles was that for the first time, all games were played at night, a time more convenient for the country fans. The rural teams have come a long ways and if tne brand of football played in '55 can be taken as a criterion, the rural teams should be on a par with the urban prep teams in just a few more years. The Leilehua Mules under the tutoring of Mr. Bill Smithe, did their utmost to capture the League crown. But with Lady Luck on the opposing teams, the Mules were able to win but 2 games. The boys played with all they had and showed good sports- manship throughout the season. Row I F. Noguchi, G. Matsui, A. Geolina,'-A. Caraulia, H. Marks, G. A1goso,,fR. Higa,5R. Kakogawa. Row II: R.
