He uses the so-called manned maneuvering unit to move away from the Shuttle Challanger dur- ing the eight-day space mission. On the celebration of her 98th birthday in 1984, the necessity for restoring the Statue of Liberty became clear to the American people. Worn from constant pummeling by wind, salt air and acid rain, the Lady ' s age had begun to show. As contributions from corporations and private citizens began to flow in, a two-year restoration, beginning in July of 1984, was made possible. The special touch in her beautification included a new gold plated torch.

Around the World Pope John Paul II became a traveling man with his frequent trips abroad. South Korea. Thai- land, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands were his stops for May. In June, he paid Switzerland a visit. September lead him to Canada and October to Spain, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. In May, the Pope (right) stopped at Mt. Hagen, Papua New Guinea where he met some of the 200,000 natives that turned out to welcome him in the highland jungle country.

Vanessa Williams was forced to sur- render her title as Miss America at the request of pageant officials because she had posed nude for sexually explic- it photos. She became the first of 57 Miss Americas to be forced to resign. Suzette Charles, the first runner-up, became the 58th Miss America. She crowned Sharlene Wells, Miss Utah, at the Atlantic City Pageant in Sep- tember. On the night of the Oscars, both Robert Duvall and Shirley MacLaine appeared to accept their awards. Duvall received an Oscar for his role as a washed-up country singer who overcomes alcoholism in the film Tender Mercies. MacLaine won the best actress and Jack Nicholson won best supporting actor as an eccentric mother and pot-bellied ex-astronaut in Terms of Endearment, which also won the best picture award.
