They have always lived in the shadow of the Engineers. Count- less times throughout their college careers they find themselves defending their major choices, and explaining what they were really going to do with their lives after Lehigh. They are the students of the College of Arts and Science. Since 1981, the College has gained considerable recognition. It was the beginning of the blossoming of the arts at Lehigh. The College of Arts and Science at Lehigh offers a student the intima- cy and personal attention of a small liberal arts college, while offering the varied course selection and experiences of a univer- sity education. Today, the College of Arts and Science offers many diverse majors in fields such as the Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathe- matics and Natural Sciences, as well as Bachelor of Science degrees with majors including Biology and CIS. Opportunities to expand one ' s knowledge abound in the Col- lege of Arts and Science, and are not restricted to the University campus. Students spend semesters on programs in Spain, France, and Italy. Others participate in exchange programs with the University of Kent, Manchester Institute of Science and Tech- nology, and the University of York in England. Programs offered in the United States include studying at the Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies in New York, the Urban Semester in Harrisburg and the Washington Semester in the U.S. Capitol. Still others participate in volunteer and internship programs offered in the Lehigh Valley. Special courses of study such as the Science, Technology and Society program made available through a grant from the Na- tional Science Foundation, and the College Scholar program which offers a student structured curriculum which allows him to experience a special assortment of courses, are also available to specially selected students. Study in the College of Arts and Science allows a student to enjoy a traditional education at a traditional university. At Lehigh, a student is surrounded by the ever increasing sophis- tication of technology. And because of this, Lehigh ' s arts stu- dents are prepared to face the complexities of today ' s tech- nological society. It is a competitive environment where there is great pressure. It is also an enjoyable environ- ment where there is great satisfaction. It is also an environment in which there is pride in being part of those who are known as the Lehigh En- gineers. 24
