CLASS HISTORY Voices echoed through the halls of L.H.S. as the Class of 1958 began their four years of high school days under the guidance of Mr. King and Mr. McCutcheon. Sixty-eight freshmen met for their first class meeting on September 30, 1954, with the job of elect- ing officers and Student Council Representatives. The following were chosen: Pres., Anita Szkola: V. Pres., Joseph Mango: Sec., Carolyn Hinchliffe: Treas., Lawrence Stokes. The representatives to Student Council were: Richard Altomare and John Roose. Lola DeJane was chosen as freshman attendant to the football queen. She was escorted by Michael Gregorino. A One big event of the year for us was the All-High Dance, which everyone enjoyed. We were in charge of cleanup that year. What a job! We held a dance in February, 1955 to make money for the freshmen class. We also sold magazines to build up our treasury. Now we turn to another page in the history of the Class of 1958. We met with sixty- two lively sophomores under the guidance of Mrs. Biehler and Mr. Snider for our first class meeting on September 15, 1955. We chose the following officers: Pres., John Roose: V. Pres., Rosemary Troy: Sec., Virginia Mancuso: Treas., Paul Morris. Stu- dent Council representatives were elected as follows: Victor Hedl and James Rance. Attendant to the football queen, was Anita Szkola. Her escort was Francis Sevenich. Cheerleaders were chosen from our Sophomore Class. They were Rosemary Troy and Lola DeJane. This year at the All-High Dance we were in charge of refreshments. We enlarged our treasury further by selling basketball pencils and refreshments at the basketball games. Our annual class party was held at Woodland Lake in June, 1956. It was a cool day but it was still enjoyed by all who attended. Our history is half over and we are now ready to enter our Junior year. At the be- ginning of our Junior year three new members joined us. They were Barbara Ball- mann, Neil Ballmann, and Richard Friedberg. On September 13, 1956 we held our first class meeting with the purpose of electing officers. Our class advisers were Miss Straub and Mr. Alter. The following were cho- sen as officers: Pres., Neil Ballmann: V. Pres., Francis Sevenichg Sec., Barbara Ball- mann: Treas., Judy Spear. Student Council representatives were elected as follows: John Roose, Raymond Lodge, and Virginia Mancuso. Junior Queen attendant was chosen as Judy Lossick. She was escorted by Gary Gotthardt. To make money for the Junior Class, members sold concessions at the football games. An All-High Dance was held in April, it was our job to hire an orchestra. The big day for the juniors arrived when the class rings were to be chosen by a committee and the class picked one. The class colors were chosen to be lavender and white and our flower, an orchid. Our Class motto was chosen to be: Truth Rules the Universe. On November 20, 1956, the Junior Classrpresented our first play, a three act comedy entitled Meet Me In St. Louis. The girl attending Girls' State was Barbara Ballmann, her alternate, Judy Spear. Attending Boys' State were Paul Morris and Raymond Lodge with Neil Ballmann as al- ternate. We wish to thank the American Legion for making that possible. Then came a big highlight in the history of the class of 1958, the Junior-Senior Prom. The class chose the theme, Paradise Isle. We spent many long hours working on preparations. The main ,speaker was Father Braun. The decorations consisted of palm trees, boats, a hut, an island, and a large ship in which the orchestra was seated. Following the banquet in the gym, we danced to the music of Bill Richards. Our history is almost finished as we turn to the last chapter of our high school days. Fifty-three seniors met in Room 76 under the guidance of Miss Wilhelm for electing officers. The following were chosen: Pres., Judy Spear: V. Pres., Richard Friedbergg Sec., Anita Szkola: Treas., Francis Sevenich. The Student Council Representatives re- mained the same as last year's. At the football game with Minerva, Carolyn Hinchliffe reigned as Homecoming Queen, chosen by the football team. She was escorted by Francis Sevenich. Her court consisted of: Senior Attendant: Judy Spear, escorted by Walter Gudatg Junior Attend- ant: Marlene Miller, escorted by Joe Gburg Sophomore Attendant: Mary Woods, es- corted by Lee Radlerg and Freshman Attendant: Gayle Billet, escorted by Robert Scul- lioin. On October 21, 22, and 23 the Seniors all went to Alliance to have their pictures ta en. Rosemary Troy was chosen Editor of the annual and Theodore Fickes, Assistant Editor. John Roose is business manager with Carolyn Hinchliffe as his assistant. We would like to thank everyone that helped the staff put forth their best efforts to make this annual a success. The Senior Class published a school paper entitled the Bear Facts with Martha Shinn as Editor and Judy Spear as her assistant. The annual Tri-Hi-Y Prom was held on Saturday, December 14, 1957. The theme chosen was Stairway to the Stars. It was held in the high school gym. The queen and her court were as follows: Queen, Barbara Sevenich: Senior Attendant, Marilyn Hinderliter: Junior Attendant, Nancy Altomare: Sophomore Attendant, Marian Unger. As seniors this year we were guest of the Juniors at the Annual Junior-Senior Prom. We would again like to thank the Juniors for the wonderful time we had. Class Day May 23, 1958, started the events of graduation. It was our last appearance as a group before the student body. Baccalaureate was May 25, 1958 with Rev. T. P. Laugh- ner, speaker. Commencement was on May 28, 1958 in the high school gym. The Senior Class would like to thank the faculty, the Student body, cur Class Spon- sor, Miss Wilhelm and all who guided us through these four memorable years. No more echoes heard in the halls of L. H. S. as the Class of 1958 looks ahead to the future. Lelia Shade Page Twenty-three Census Richard Altomare-Basketball 13 Diversified Training 43 V.I.C. 4. After much work and revision. the constitution was accepted. We hope that the new constitution will be even better than the old one. As you know, the Student Council performs many services in the school. such as' handling assembly programs, directing activities, sponsoring all-high dances. etc. The officers are: President, John Rooseg Vice-President, Eugene Leffler: Secre- tary. Terry Tilley: Treasurer, Carolyn Stratton. Our adviser throughout the year was Mr. Bailey. Our task was to strive for cooperation and understanding between the administra- tion and the students. We hope we have accomplished this. Page Fifty NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is now in the process of being organized. The sponsor for the Society is Mr. Hoskins. The purpose of this organization is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to pro- mote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character among stu- dents of Leetonia High School. The Club's Senior members are: Richard Friedberg. Raymond Lodge, Theodore Fickes, John Kalafus, Lelia Shade, and Martha Shinn. BOYS' STATE Raymond Lodge and Paul Morris Buckeye Boys' State representatives at Camp Perry were Raymond Lodge and Paul Morris with Neil Ballmann as alternate. Two boys are picked each year from the junior class by the American Legion. Their visit was very worthwhile. They made many new friends and learned a lot about the running of our government. Our thanks to the American Legion for giving them this opportunity to see how our government operates. As a junior, Barbara Ballmann had the honor of attending Buckeye Girls' State at Capitol University. Her alternate was Judy Spear. Since she has moved from our dis- trict this year, she is unable to thank the American Legion for sending her. We know that she appreciated this opportunity very much and she gained much knowledge of our government. V. I. C. CLUB The main objectives of diversified training is to acquaint the student with a trade of his own choosing, depending upon the desire, intelligence and capabilities of the in- dividual. This year there are twenty students participating in eight different trade areas. These areas include such trades as cabinet making, pattern making, mechan- ics. television repairing, and pre-nursing, to name a few. The students enrolled in D.C.T. also belong to the Leetonia Chapter of the State Vocational Industrial Club. This organization is as much a part of the students train- ing as is his related subjects. It endeavors to promote worth-while experiences for the students at the state level as well as at each local high school. The state sponsors three activities a year. The first is the fall convention and the high-light of this is the elect- ing of student state officers to govern the club. Secondly, each March the sponsor and two students from each club visit the State Legislature where they are conducted through many state offices, the legislative chambers, and have the privilege of meet- ing the Governor. The students and their representatives meet at one of the local hotels for a dinner and program which puts the finishing touch to a most enjoyable and educational day, The last convention the state sponsors is held each spring and its primary func- tions are the conducting of different contests where the students participate. The con- tests include chapter procedure, extemporaneous speaking, and job application. The unique part of the contests is the fact that each student, competes against himself rather than competing with a group. There are three awards given: bronze. silver, and gold, with gold being the highest recognition you can attain. This convention is concluded with the awarding of awards and the cherished award being the one given for outstanding achievement in ones trade area. Page Eighty-five Class Poem The Years Gone By As we look over the years gone byg Our memories are hright of Leetonia High Of the things we did and the places we went. Our hearts sink low and our heads are hent, To think that now we must leave these halls, That have been our refuge, our bondage, our all. For now the time has come to leave And go into the world to seek our goal. We may never find what we're looking for, But we must try to open the door. As we look into the laces of those we know so well: Our friends, elassmates. and teaehers were swell. With a sigh and a. tear, We leave everyone here, With the good Lord's strength, guidanee. and help, We leave you now, dear L.H.S. Judy Spear Class Song In The Halls of Leetonia High School ITune -H Love Letters In The Sand? We are leaving today Our thoughts will always stray To the Halls of Leetonia High. We say thanks to all here Who have been so very dear And helped us in the days gone hy. We had such fun with all our classmates and friends But I guess it all must come to an end. Now it's time to bid adieu From all of us to you And the Halls of Leetonia High. Page Eighty-six Class Prophecy In the year 1965 Miss Wilhelm boarded the ship Paradise Island which was sail- ing for Australia. She had received a letter from Mighty Joe Mango the Magnificent, in which he told her that he was competing for the title of Mr. Universe. Miss Wilhelm wanted to see this spectacular event in which one of her graduates was the star attraction. Judy Spear was Joe's manager so she accompanied Miss Wil- helm on the trip. As the captain gave the order to pull up anchor, she recognized that it was none other than Paul Morris. After everyone on board was settled, the co-captain, Ray Lodge, announced that there was to be a special show to be put on for the entertainment of Miss Wilhelm. Everyone was sitting on the edges of their seats waiting for the star. It was that ever famous diver and swimmer Lelia Shade and her manager Larry Indermill. The drums rolled as she jumped up and down preparing for her dive. She made a jacknife and everyone ohed and ahed their admiration. Suddenly our attention was drawn by two waitresses, Ruth Beiling and Marilyn Hinderliter, as they rang the dinner bell. There was a very tempting aroma of fried ham coming from the dining hall so no one waited to be called a second time. As head chef of the ship was David Childs and the Social Director, Donna Brooks. Who did we run into next but Arch Strabala with his leading lady Miss Verona Grady who were going to Spain to cast a picture called Moonlight over Madrid. A- long with them was John Kalafus, Producer, and Director, Lois Bingham. We had just left the dining room and were on the deck when we saw someone prac- ticing rope tricks. It was none other than our old side-kick Tom Miller and his manager George Slocum. Tom told us that he owned a ranch down in California with Ginny Man- cuso as his manager and Jackie Stevenson as his horse trainer. As his head cook on this mammoth ranch is Connie McMillan with her assistants Judy Kelm, and George Good. Connie is noted for her western style of French Fried Rattlesnake Meat. Tom also said he had made many pictures in Hollywood and that he sees a lot of Anita Szkola and Ted Fickes who have been making quite a few Tarzan and Jane mov- ies. Their producer, Walter Gudat, won an Oscar for the best jungle picture of the year. We talked so long that it was nearly supper-time, we parted and planned to meet at 7 0'- clock in the ball room. Time passed quickly as we were talking to Maxine Carey, the owner of the ship's night club, when on the stage came the Master of Ceremonies, Chum Hedl. He intro- duced the Monkeyshine Sisters and to our surprise we found them to be Mary Lou Wel- ker, Priscilla Barnes, and Donna Weikart. After that the 4 Jay's came on and did their barber shop quartet bit, of course they were none other than Jim Rance, Jim Tingle, Jim Prior and Jim Cook. Another classmate of ours, Dick Altomare, was the ship's roving news-reporter for the New York Times. Working with him as the best photographer in the United States was Bob Cope. While talking to Bob and Dick they told us that Rosemary Troy, Judy Lossick, and Barbara Sevenich were on their way to Paris with the famous fashion designer Jerry Carroll to model his famous creations. , We noticed everybody applauding. As we turned around we saw the ambassador of the U. S. entering. It was none other than Richard Friedberg. The excitement had just died down when someone was heard screaming Man Overboard. We all rushed out and Lelia Shade had just dived in to save the poor victim. We found out that it was Don Weikart, and who do you suppose was the ship's doctor? Yes, it was Joyce Leach. We were all just settling down in the ball room when in came this frantic blonde telephone operator. It was none other than Lola DeJane. Apparently she had an im- portant message as she was dragging half of the switchboard behind her. The Presi- dent of the United States, Francis Sevenich had a message for everyone on board. He came over the P. A. System and said that from the Class of 1958 that were on board were not there by accident, but that it had been planned by him as a reunion in honor of his friend Miss Wilhelm. He said he was sorry he was not there but he was too busy at his country estate. Then Secretary of State, Bob Clunen came on and said a few words. When the ex- citement had died down to a dull roar we went over and talked to the famous soda jerk, John Roose, who was knovm for his colossal gigantic luscious frosty Sundaes, in other words Vanilla ice cream. Then there was a speech from Fred Girard All-American. To end the evening we all stood and sang our Alma Mater. The orchestra was led by the flower of the musical world Gary Gotthardt with pianist Jerry Guchemand. The famous opera star Bertha Wolford then sang our class song. Carol I-Iinchliffe now one of the famous Ranger- ettes did a twirling routine for old times sake. This was a day never to be forgotten by any of the class of 1958!
