We are now adults ready to go out into the world with all our hopes and dreams of our future. But let us not pass by those in need; let us contribute to each person we encounter. Let us seek understanding of our world and grasp the meaning of life. Let us try to create more unity by instill¬ ing peace and love into our daily lives. Looking back on our years we recall good times, friends, excitement, and tears of joy. We leave with our memories and face the future—a future of PEACE, LOVE and HOPE. 13 m z c 73 tyi Janet Kerr, Public Relations SENIORS 14 Paul Henry Allan, Jr. Kathleen Gail Antonini Clare Marie Anzalone Pamela Helen Archer Lynne Adren Armstrong Janet Cheryl Arnett Marshall David Arnold Sandra Lea Babler Stephen Kim Badzik Joseph Henry Barget, Jr. 15 Mary Lydia Barker John David Barlow, Jr. Jane Frances Barnes Martha Ann Barricks Donna Kaye Barrineau Joni Michelle Batchelor Donna Marie Bean Laura Louise Bennett Leslie Kay Berens Patricia Ann Binion William Walker Blaine Jane Everett Blitch . . .AND CONTEMPLATE THE FUTURE. Early Saturday morning, October 10th, approximately 300 alarm clocks sounded over sleepy Springfield. The owners were the members of the Class of ' 71 and the event was the annual Senior Class Trip to Annapolis. When the Seniors arrived at the Academy, everyone took off in a different direction; but managed to be back in time for the Navy— " Pitt " game. Navy lost its Homecoming by a close score of 10—8; however, the spirit and enthusiasm of the Senior class was undaunted as they boarded the buses to return to Springfield. 45 SENIORS CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN. SENIORS SENIORS MY SISTER EILEEN ISA HIT. The Senior Class presentation of " My Sister Eileen " reflected the hard work and energy of the talented cast and competent stage crew. The play centered around two sisters who went to New York to seek their fortune. One, played by Jeanette Dulong, wished to become a writer; the other, played by Cindy Mundy, wanted to become an actress. Their humorous experiences ranged from meeting Brazilian Navy officers to arguing with their Italian landlord, Steve Burns. Thus the spirited comedy, under the able direction of Mrs. Sotirchos, proved to be the biggest success in Lee ' s history. 46 47 SENIORS SENIORS 48 I I A l MEMCO SCHOLARSHIP Steve Burns D. A. JACKSON, JR., PRINCIPAL ADMINISTRATION A school ' s greatness is measured by the spirit and enthusiasm of its student body; and by a capable faculty and staff interested in young people. Lee High School has these ingredients, along with a student body of young men and women who strive for excellence in academics, as well as in sports and extra—-curricular activities. These young people are fortunate to be guided by teach¬ ers and administrators who support these endeav¬ ors. My first year as principal has been a rewarding ex¬ perience and I am proud to be part of such a school. I wish the graduating class of 1971 every success and I am optimistic that the future gradu¬ ates will uphold the ideals and traditions which have established Lee as one of the finest schools in Fairfax County. William E. Jackson, Jr. 53 Robert E. Lee High School is Fortunate in having three fine and dedicated administrators in General Norell, Mr. Baumgartner and Mr. Biglin. The student body was full of spirit the whole week. Everyone was thinking of different ways to have good luck on Friday night at the game. Classes decorated their halls, built floats and bought spirit blocks in the Vic¬ tory Block Game. Gypsies told fortunes in the cafeteria. The follies were on Thursday night, and the spirit drum was heard all night long. The Lancers mashed Madison as the fans cheered them on to victory Friday night. The week came to a climax at the Homecoming Dance Saturday night when the Queen and her court were presented. People danced to the music of the “Tornadoes ' ' . It was a great homecoming. Last year, an exchange program was established at Lee with no connections with a set exchange program. Contact was made with the Oxford, England, school system and as a result, four Lee students went to Oxford for three weeks and returned with four English students who spent three weeks here in Springfield. This year the program has been continued and expanded. Five girls were chosen—on the basis of interviews—-and they will attend schools in Oxford for three weeks. A week after their return to Springfield the English girls will arrive to spend three weeks here. Mexico, here we come! Soon, we will be spending three weeks in Mexico city, living with a Spanish speaking fam i¬ ly and attending a Mexican school. We hope to really soak up the language and to come back to the States with a better understanding of the Mexican culture. To try for the exchange program, we had to turn in an application stating our reasons for wanting to go to Mexico. We had an interview in front of several teachers from Lee and some of the parents of the girls who went to England last year. We look forward to a wonderful stay south of the border, in Mexico. Even during the first six games, Lee was never out of the fight, they simply needed to learn how to win. Once they accomplished that feat by stomping Madison for a Homecoming victory they became one of the finest teams in the Gunston District. Promising Junior players demonstrated that with a bit more experience they will become the members of a much improved team. Probably for the first time in many years, instead of losing starting players through graduation, the seeds of championship were sowed in the Freshman and J.V. teams. These seeds should spawn into a varsity team ready to challenge for the district title. Coach Moore 1 SPORTS SPORTS 130 SINK IT BOYS, SINK IT! High school at last! This has not been an easy year. It has been one of confusion and frustration for most. Small problems and large, good times and bad times have drawn us together and we feel that our class will be a special one. We have already proved this in our school spirit and in our enthusiasm for Robert E. Lee. Our other years will be good ones, but each of us will have special memories of this—our first year. As the year draws to a close, we look back with pleasure upon the events that have filled our cup of memories to overflowing. We have attempted to capture the best and most outstanding of these memories between the covers of the 1971 Shield. We should consider ourselves very fortunate to have an advisor as capable as Mrs. Glenda Burgess to help us over the rough spots; and I feel that we cannot adequately express our thanks to our lay-out editor Cheryl Funk, photographer, Linda Kaplan and typist, Patti Weathers, whose patience and cooperation were truly astonishing and always appreciated. The staff also wishes to acknowledge: Mr. E.C. Belote for sixteen beautiful girls and a lot of encouragement; Pete Shatswell for last minute phone calls and pictures; Mrs. Sanders for a hundred purchase orders; Mr. Hatcher for clues for sharper pictures; Mr. Settle for locks, a lamp shade and putting up with all our female complaining; Mrs. Ryan for identifying pictures; Mr. Baumgartner for the phone call to New York and " smile girls " ; General Norell for opening doors and all the times we got caught in the halls without a pass; Mrs. Arthur Stevens and Cheryl Stevens from ads to transportation; our parents for letting us stay up all night; our teachers who allowed us to cut classes; and last but not least, Mr. Ellis, our representative from Hunter Publishing Company. We hope that we have succeeded in our endeavor to present a good yearbook to you. With the sincere wish that each of you will find among these pages something special—something you will remember for a long, long time—we give you the 1971 Shield.
