As Miss Fuller was a part ot Lee since its first year, there are many of her students throughout the community who fondly recall the torce of her rare dignity, her fine scholarship, and her gracious understanding. Robert E. Lee's newly constructed varsity dressing room will be ready tor occupancy in Septem- ber, 1949. Constructed of concrete block, the new building will house dressing facilities, showers, and equip- ment for all varsity and junior varsity teams. Since all athletic equipment will be stored there, the present crowded conditions in the boys' dressing room will be alleviated. Architects have so designed the new building that it the need should arise, an annex can be built adjacent to it or, because of its exceptionally stable foundation, a scond story can be added. This is an achievement oi which all Lee students, both past and present, may well be proud: they helped to build it. All the dollars paid for the privilege of cheering on to victory the Blue and Gray football, baseball, basketball, and track teams went into the athletic fund, from which was allotted the more than 520,000 needed to erect this beautiful addition to the school plant. 'Hifi' .-- I . , , I - .yt '59 if INTERCOM SYSTEM The new Program Master intercommunications system is the first of its kind in lacksorivxlle. Shakespearian plays, presidential addresses, World Series games, dance music, the finest in cultural and educational programs can now be brought directly to the classroom. The main feature of the new Program Master is, of course, the two way public address sys- tem, but it also has a turntable for playing records, recording instruments, and a television panel. To the average student this maze of keys, knobs, dials, and colored lights is a complete mystery. Professor Gilbert, however, manipu- lates it with the ease of an experienced tech- nician, and his broadcasts are a delightful Change from the army of fleet-footecl students who used to carry the bulletins. The students and faculty alike owe a debt ot gratitude to Professor Gilbert, the athletic association, and the schoolboarcl, whose untiring efforts and generous contributions combined to purchase this new communications system for Lee. ' 7 HARRY FOZZARD is the rare combina- tion of a capable leader and a willing follower. Behind his often furrowed brow there is a business-like mind that meets every problem with determina- tion ancl foresight. Practical and de- pendable, Harry never shirks a job and through the years has never failed to earn the admiration and respect of his fellow workers. Those who know him well remember him fondly for the force of his wit and wisdom and the bright challenge of his interesting maturity. Cheerful smiles, sparkling eyes, friend- ly words-these are the things with which we associate GRACIE DIXON. Never too busy to say hello, Gracie has brought a bright ray of sunshine into the halls of Lee. Her classmates, calling on her time and again, know she has served them well: cheerleader, president of the Senior Girls' Club, mascot of the Senior Boys' Club, the L-Club, and Delta Hi-Y. By being her sweet and lovable self, Gracie has a permanent place in our hearts. il ISABELLE SWIFT has a many-sided charm. She has won the respect of teachers and students alike by being delightfully natural. Always ready to give of herself, she has never failed to come smiling through whenever called upon. Her school and classmates have benefited during the past three years by the various services which she has cheerfully and efficiently performed. Intelligent, capable, witty, and kind- lzzy has the good taste and imagina- tion to meet both problems and people in the spirit of fitness and good fellow- ship. RICHARD HELLINGER, the all-round boy, is outstanding not because of his superiority in one particular field but because of his eager participation and fine achievements in many activities ot student lite. Music, dramatics, athletics, scholar- ship, Hi-Y-these are the useful chan- nels into which his untiring energy has turned. Wi , however, is perhaps admired and loved most for his warm ever ready smile and the friendly un- affected air which we have come to associate with him. Gifted with rare charm, graciousness, and innate poise, CAROL TOMPKINS has gained the admiration and good will of students and teachers during her years at Lee. Always dependable, she takes on the most unrewarding task cheerfully and, large or small, does it to the best of her ability. Her wide circle of friends and admirers earnestly believe that Carol will go far, for she has all the essentials upon which success de- pends. BERYL LOVITZ represents that rare achieve- ment of self reliance and skill. He gets things done, Apart from the serious pursuit of his studies he has been auspiciously associated with the manifold duties and re- sponsibilities of year book production. Few high school activities offer greater chal- lenge to enterprise, resourcefulness, and conscientious concern. That Beryl has been the dependable force behind two success- ful publications of the Blue and Gray, staff members and sponsors alike enthusiastically concede, They know too, as do all who know him either in or out of editorship, that here is a boy to whom principles and plugging go hand in hand. VIRGINIA WAY is a student in the true sense ot the word. She has a steadtastness of purpose and a devoted concern tor learning that command our admiration and respect. The dig- nity in her modest manner and the sincerity in her smile inspiringly re- mind us of the quiet virtue of integri- ty. Q DICK PETRY might well be called Lee's Ambassador of Good Will. Sure- ly his many friends have dependable proof of his wholesome endeavors and his stout-hearted concern. Unassum- ing as Dick is in positions enviable and wide, his friends are proud to recognize the achievements of a boy whose character is good to know. Ysvlf Through her three years at Lee, MARI- LYN WYNNE has meant music. Her many friends have listened with rap- ture as her talented fingers perform expertly at the keyboard. The charm and ease which she displays at the piano remain with her even afterward and her shy modesty and gracious in- dividuality have won her countless admirers. A bright future awaits Breezy , for we know that she will continue to strike the right note wher- ever she goes. JVM' It has been said that the best things come in small packages and WILTON SMITHERS is no exception. He has shown his ability as the capable, ef- ficient president of the Senior Class and as a speedy tailback on the foot- ball field. His infectious grin, his com- plete ease, and his natural manner have won him great popularity with all. Respected by students and teachers alike, Tuffy has proved himself worthy of every honor bestowed upon him during his high school career. APPRECIATION ln September, when work on the annual began, staff members knew that there would be many small and tedious tasks as well as pleasant and satisfying ones-each equally important. The 1949 Blue and Gray that is now in your hands is proof that everyone did his job well. We should like to take this opportunity to extend a sincere word of thanks to all staff members and students who generously gave both time and effort. We should like especially to express our heartfelt appreciation to Joe Bell- flower and Marcia Morris, whose untiring efforts produced the background draw- ings in the activities section, . . . . to our student photographers, Neil Russell and David Gingrich, who spent many hours in the dark room, . . . . to our sponsors, Miss Edith Cowles and Mr. Denver R.
