One has only to take a trip to the Soviet Union to realize how fortunate we are here in America. We should all have a profound sense of gratitude to our forefathers for the kind of government they founded for us and for our school system which encourages creative, critical thinking on the part of each student. May you continue to make the most of your oppor- tunities and set for yourselves additional worthwhile goals. x J. W. KlNG Superintendent of Schools TO THE 1960 GRADUATING CLASS: We live and achieve through our deeds, thoughts, and feelings. It has been the school's purpose to prepare each of you to think the most, feel the noblest and act the best as responsible citizens of your school, community and nation. It is with sincere pleasure and pride that I extend per- sonal congratulations to each graduating senior, and to all other members of our student body for their achieve- ments and high level of citizenship. You have the proud distinc- tion of being the largest class to ever graduate from a Lebanon High School and the first graduating class to number over two hundred in size. Along with this dis- tinction in quantity, we have also been very proud of the quality of performance displayed by this fine class. You have been outstanding in scholastic endeavor, music and dramatic productions, athletic accomplishments, student leadership and all-around good citizenship . Your efforts have brought credit to our school and community and we hope you will always cherish the many fine accomplish- ments you have been a part of over the past four years. I have many pleasant memories as far as the Class of 1960 is concerned and I feel humbly proud to have been given the opportunity to know you and work with you. Boseboll I, lnrromurols 2, Senior Class History XVe, the senior class of '60, take with us many happy memories of the good times we have had. Our senior advisors, Mrs. Wilshire, Miss Schiltz, Mr. Ben- nett, Mr. XVay, Miss Rayborn, Mr. Moynihan, Mr. Neuman, and Mr. Richey were greatly appreciated. Our freshman year was very successful under the leadership of President, Mike Armstrong, Vice President, Jim Lamphereg Secretary, Nancy Tewalt, Treasurer, Judy Bicknell, and Student Council Rep- resentative, Barbara Britton. As freshmen, our class had lots of fun presenting the freshman class assembly Why Teachers Turn Gray. Several freshman boys represented the class well in the various sports. Our sophomore class officers lead us through an- other successful year in our new high school. The officers were: President, Rick Summersg Vice Presi- dent, Gary Jordong Secretary-Treasurer, Joyce Col- lin, and Representative, Mike Armstrong. Sixteen sophomores won recognition as prospec- tive National Honor Society members. They were: Jeff Bemetz, Joyce Collin, Kathie Evans, Evon Fal- ler, Lauralee Gainer, Carla Garrison, Kathy Giddens, Denise Kent, Becky Lanning, Mike Merzenich, Caro- lyn Paine, Shirley Seiders, Bill Sisson, Lawrence Swanson, Joan W'asson, and Margaret Williams. Nancy Tewalt and Jan Gilbert were elected as B squad cheerleaders. The various sports were all represented by the sophomore boys. The sophomore class chose Rick Summers and Nancy Tewalt as prince and princess for the Sweet- heart Ball, February 15. Our class assembly, which was presented in Feb- ruary, Invasion on Planet Xerxes , was very suc- cessful as well as a lot of fun. Our junior class officers were: President, Jim Lamphereg Vice President, Larry Bond, Secretary, Jan Gilbertg Treasurer, Kathy Giddens, and Repre- sentatives, Barbara Britton, Joyre Collin, and Mar- garet Williams. The Junior-Senior Prom, Nipponese Paradise was a thrilling and exciting evening for all the par- tiripants. Queen Kathy Gildens and Princesses Pam Boyd, Barbara Britton, Jan Gilbert, Deejee Mitchell, Nancy Tewalt, and Gayle Tucker all looked beautti- ful in the setting. Celene Christensen, who was homecoming prin- cess from our class, was also chosen Queen of the Homecoming. Several junior boys earned letters in the various sports. Nancy Tcwalt was the only junior AU squad cheerleader. As juniors we put on a class assembly different than any before. It was put on entirely by the class without help from any advisers. It was called 'The Ides of Marchn and was centered around the life of Julius Caesar. During the summer of 1959, Carolyn Scott rep- resented our school as an American Field Service rep- resentative. Carolyn spent her summer in Byorsater, Sweden. Class officers during our senior year were: Pres- ident, Lawrence Swansong Vice President, Lyle Thompsong Secretary, Joan Wassong Treasurer, Mar- garet Williamsg and Representatives, Jeannette Van- divcr and John Van Vleet. The senior girls on A squad were Jan Gilbert, Deejee Mitchell, and Yell Queen Nancy Tewalt. Senior princesses for the homecoming were Jari- lynn Dollarhide and Junko Kikuchi. Junko, our Japanese exchange student, was selected as Home- coming Queen. The Warriors were victorious over the Albany Bulldogs the night of our homecoming. The winter formal dance Enchanted Forest , was very successful. The large crowd that attended the winter formal were impressed with the beauti- ful decorations and the excellent music by our own high school dance band. As we leave L.U.H.S. and become another grad- uating class, we will always remember our many friendships and good times of our high school days. 'X n yin 91 ' v Qi vw rf. 1 fi ' s gm ff 4 . al . This year has been one of the best Lebanon High has seen in many years and this has been accomplished through your co-operation. Your school spirit has hit a new high and you have supported your school to the best of your ability. This could not have been done without the help of all the students. I At the start of this school year my officers and I set out to better our school through your support and help. We feel that our goal has been accomplished and again your help and support has been the determining factor. Last but certainly not least, I want to thank the Admini- stration and Facultyg for without their help there would be no Student Council movement in our school. Sincerely yours, Mike Armstrong A.S.B. President P. S. Good Luck to all you new officers and may you have as good a year, if not better, than the one we have just completed. Student Council This year, one of Student Councilis most outstanding ac- complishments was installing the Hi-Fi Club in our school. As a result of membership in this club, the school gained a new stereo to play during noon-hours and dances. The revival of Boys' League, promoting dance regulations, and arguing were also progressive activities of Student Council. Then there were the determined never-say-die efforts to get students to realize that wading to their knees in litter through our glorious halls was just not the thing to do. Student Council also sponsored a Students' Day which gave student representatives reign over the kingdom for a day. Student Council wishes to thank the faculty for their courage and wonderfully unselfish co-operation in helping with this project. All in all, whenever Student Council heads got together over a problem, it turned into a turmoil of solutions. The wonderful thing about it' is that in the end, it always turned out fine. With all sincerity, we, as representatives of Lebanon I-Iigh's student population, have given our best to our jobsg we can only hope it was enough. This year will always be a happy and proud memory in our hearts: happy we belonged to Leb- anon Union High and proud we represented the students. fs MIKE ARMSTRONG President V717 MIKE MERZENICH President President 7 ....., Mike Merzenich Vice President e,...... Inter-Activity Council is made up of club presidents or their representatives and was formed to consider suggestions and grievances presented by the clubs. Inter-Activity Council started the year by setting up new dance rules to be carried out by each club sponsoring a dance. These rules proved to be quite efficient and helpful in control- ling situations arising at many dances. Another project of I.A.C. was getting coat racks to use at dances. This would elim- inate some of the confusion and inconvenience which often arises. The Council proved very helpful in getting student co- operation in hall and locker cleanups. Also, the club presidents were very helpful in taking important information back to their clubs on matters essential in having a successful student body. Changing the constitution on a few points to improve it was discussed and was to be carried over to Student Council for consideration. There were many other points which I.A.C. brought up and passed on to Student Council. Bock Row: Deloploin, Angersfein, Plunkett, Burt, McMcins, Hosking, Girod, Vondiver. On January 16, the club took a field trip to the Portland Air Force Base and the Portland International Airport Control Tower. While at the Portland Airport they visited the radar room, witnessed a few planes taking off and landing. The club members thought that this field trip was well worth the time spent to take it. Throughout this year the club hasn't been too active be- cause it got started a little later than the preceding years. The club has seen quite a number of films so far this year and is planning to see a few more later on this year. The club is presently engaged in a model airplane building contest but so far not too many of the students seem to be interested in the building of model airplanes. 80 0 a Q ,XR 1... Besides jointly sponsoring the Thanksgiving and Christmas concerts with the choir department, the band also gave a winter concert, in which the newly purchased uniforms were first publicly presented. The acquisition of these uniforms was one of the best things that,s happened to the band in recent years. Also, the band spent many long hours on the football field and the public streets trying to develop a sound march- ing unit. An attempt was made as well to develop a few solo and ensemble groups, and these groups made a commendable showing at contest, as well as in civic appearances. The band, in entirety, gave a good showing in the district contest as well. Most of the members of the Lebanon High School concert and marching band can look at 1960 as a year of accomplish- ment. There were difficult moments, as there are in any or- ganization, especially when the leadership of that organization changes by chance for two consecutive years, but we of the band can honestly say that those steps we took, all during the year, were steps forward. ,,.,,,., A,-2 W- -f - mm. .msuv M733 H fu ... uecxzv' ,vw-.www nf 'm i - fM'3P?' 5: -I-. ,t AY- H' ,mm qgovvmw if W Bock Row: Posemon, Reid, Toylor, Furber, Blalock, Kczrpinski, Miles, Lynch, Bowers, Blalock. Carolyn Scott 0-x LOIS BLALOCK Prnxirslanf Paletteers The purpose of our club has been to promote higher in- terest in art among our members and the students of the school. Qur yearly membership drive brought many new and in- terested students to the club. The initiation party held for them had a Beatnik theme. As a Christmas project some of the members painted Christmas scenes on service station windows. This was very successful and added much spirit to the town. Prize winners were Marna Stegeman and Sandra Fenner, firstg Ray Hudson and Sue White, second. Bulletin boards around the school were also decorated by the members and props for the Christmas play were done by the club. I In February and March we painted scenery for the all- school -fperetta The Red Mill . This was a new and interest- ing experience for many members. In May we decorated for May Day which is an old tradi- tion of the club. Much time was spent on it, but in return we received much joy and satisfaction. Throughout the entire year the club has helped with a variety of projects around the school. 7 Point Chairman . Nancy X allely Bock Row: Britton, Wright, Comrncck, White, Tucker, Hurst. Science Club The purpose of the club is to maintain an interest in science among the members of the club. Recently we have been assisting the grade schools in teaching their science pro- gram by one or two of the members giving a demonstration with apparatus concerning some field of science. Also we have been evaluating some of the science projects for the lower grades. Every year, when April rolls around, and it is again time for the science fair, the club makes it one of its duties to assist the judges and visitors, as well as the exhibitors, during the exhibition. We also stimulate interest in the members to enter the fair, thus giving a representation of the high school. Our future plans include several field trips, to the Bureau of Mines, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and the Met- alurgical Building. We also are planning to buy a telescope and view the solar system at night meetings. This year we were proud to have several winners at the local fair who won first places in their different fields of science. Their projects then go to the district fair to be judged against projects from all around Linn county. 106 President .....,,... ......... W arrene Gill Vice President ..u. Membership to the club is open to all sophomore, junior, and senior girls who have acquired a grade point aver- age of a three or better. The club has fostered and extended sportsmanship and pep for games by decorating goal posts, painting posters, and hon- oring the senior members and coaches of all the athletic teams by presenting them with carnations at the end of their seasons, and honoring senior Pep Club girls by presenting them with white mums. Pep Club has made money by selling school de- cals and co-sponsoring an after-game dance. The club has donated money to such worthy projects as the glass back- board fund and the American Field Service program. Though Lebanon High did not win the Basketball Jam- boree Yell Trophy this year, the Warriorettes kept school spirit high, furthering the high ideals of sportsmanship that this Pep Club stands for. Loklcen, Fall Thespians Only two plays were presented this year instead of the usual three. The operetta, The Red Mill, replaced the third three-act play. The fall play, A Man Called Peter , was a well-known play revolving around a young Protestant minister with progressive ideas. Three Blind Mice, the spring play, told of three sisters and their efforts to marry millionaires. It was presented April 28 and 29. Besides the once-a-month business meeting, three parties were held. Two of these followed plays. The other party was held after the cast of the spring play and other members of the troupe attended the movie, How to Marry A Millionaire . Our club also had the privilege of initiating the charter members of the Albany troupe in ovember. The annual formal banquet was held in May for the pur- pose of initiating new members adn installing officers for the coming year.
