SEATED1 Mr. Siolund- Williams. CDpi2i'ettu A Gilbert and Sullivan operetta was chosen this year as the high school choir's big protect for the year. After long hours of practice and hard work an costumes and sets, the cast, under the direction of Mr. Siolund, presented The Pirates of Penzance, Those who took lead parts were: Joe Canoga, Major-General Stanley, Ginger Wilcox, his ward Mabel, Dwight Gilley, Frederick, C. E. Spence, the Pirate King, Nancy Caldwell, Ruth, David Diercoff, Samuel, Marilyn Gilliam, Edith, Jerrianne Winstead, Kate, Miriam Brown, Isabel, Charles Backman, Sergeant of the Police. The plot follows the usual Gilbert and Sullivan manner af hilarious contradiction, but as usual it manages to end happily. Through a mistake on the part of Ruth, Fred- erick was apprenticed to a Pirate instead of a Pilot. Frederick, though he loved the pirates, had come to feel that he must destroy them after his twenty-first birthday when he was out of his indentures. Ruth in the meantime is makin-g one last try at getting her middle-aged self a man, and has Frederick, who has never seen a woman, believing she is beautiful. After leaving the pirates, Frederick, with the begging Ruth, came upon the young and pretty wards of Maior-General Stanley. Mabel, one of the wards, and Frederick tall in love and plan to marry after the extermination of the pirates. The pirates watching unnoticed, seize the girls and threaten immediate marriage, but the Maior-General saves the day by telling a sad tall tale of his being an orphan 53 boy, at which the pirates who are the famous orphans, release his wards, and leaxe, The story, however, bothers the Major-General and therefore he is very anxious and pleased when Frederick and the police start their march against the pirates. The Pirffe King and Ruth find Frederick alone shortly before and introduce a startling paradox This being that Frederick has had only five birthdays since he was born on February 29th. But as this can only happen in a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta it was discoverel that the pirates were noblemen arid the Maior-General gladly gave his daughters in marriage to them and all ended well. The sets were designed and executed by the Art Department with the help of the stagecraft class. The first scene was a rocky coast of England, and the second scene was a ruined castle which belonged to the Maior-General Besides the leads, the entire choir sang and acted out various parts. The boys played the parts of the pirates and the police, and the girls were the wards of Major- General Stanley. BACK ROW. Guinn, Fort, Gentry, Larvik, Neurnan, Hinman, Galarneau. FRONT ROW. Sherrnan, Moore. Furlong. Crocker. ziiiioi' ljlriy This year's selection for the Junior Class play was Meet Corliss Archer. The play was given March T3 at 8 pm. It was well presented and the cast deserves credit in the work that they did. The leading role was played by Marilyn Furlong, who played Corliss Archer. She adores Dexter Franklin, played by John Crocker. Corliss' father, Mr. Archer, played by Vernon Gentry, is a man in his early forties. Mrs. Archer, played by Joanna Moore, is about the sarne age as her husband and is well poised. Everything goes fine at the Archer residence until Cousin A-gnes, comically played by Peggy Sherman, appears. She is an old maid who gives the Archers quite a time and the ardierce a lot of laughs. The next door neighbors are the Franklins, Dexter's parents. Mr. Franklin is por- trayed by Eordon Newman, his wife, Mrs. Franklin, is played by Joyce Larvik. She is a very jolly and lovable person. The Franklins are at the Archer home every evening playing chess. Louise, played by Patsy Marcks, is the Archers maid. She is a privileged and out- spoken person, who has been with the Archers for twenty years. Corliss' best friend is Mildred, played by Barbara Galarneau. They get together and really cause an uproar in the Archer home, .A Later, Carliss has broken up with Dexter and had to go.to the hospital for an operation. When she arrives home a nurse, Sally Guinn, accompanies her. The doctor, Jack Fort, is a small, nervous man, He comes to see the Archers about paying the doctor bill. Betty, Dorothy l-linman, is an inquisitive little rninx with a ready eye for the boys. Everyone who saw this play enioyed it very much. Mr. Wood, the director, has done an excellent job of directing this play. Co-a-- rectors were De Loris Powell and Gerald Pierce. They worked long and hard on this play and they did a good iob.
