At the time of this writing the Warrior ballplayers have a percentage standing of .500, having won five and lost five. The baseball squad was hit very hard by last year's graduation, Thus with only three returning lettermen a large number of new faces appeared on the diamond when Coach Bud Page had his first official practice. In spite of having such a great number of inexperienced players the team has slowly improved, from the "greenhorn" bunch that it was and looked like ot the first of the season, to where it is now, a smooth and hard working club This evolution of the ball club is very evident, having won three games in a row, at this writing, from Corvallis, Toledo, and Sweet Home. A quick glance at the roster finds Paul Alley, two year letterman, to be the only experienced pitcher. Paul Alley is one of the best chuckers in the Willamette Valley and his heavy hitting has proved a boon to the club. Bob Downing our versatile catcher and also a very hefty hitter, is playing his second year at this toughposition. The third letterman and only one in the outfield, is Claire Reeder who turns in a bang-up perform- ance at his position of left field. At first we have Les Wells, a very capable player and in years to come will undoubtedly be a valuable asset, At second we have Jerry Bcirtels, who also did some very fine pitching for the local club, He has also turned in o very good record at second.

Back Row: Coach Clark, VVnite, Vilells, Kellison, Sims, Campbell, Abbott, Raiey, Houghton Front Row Capt .lt'7'l, Bcirtels, Hostvtler, Dfapelri, Fruin lJllEllfllJillllll' Elllltll From the time some hopeful prospect made a bucket at the opening of basketball season until the final game, competition was keen and Coach Clark was pleased with the drive and spirit displayed by the "B" squad. With Tom Juza, Jerry Bartels, Joe Abbott, Harry Drapela, Don Hastetler, Remmal Nivens, and Ken Sims forming the nu- cleus of the team it was easy to work the following into a winning ball club: Al Frum, a strong backboard man from Sweet Home, Les Wells, a dependable forward from Sisters, Ore., Murray Brownhill from Vernonia, and Mearle Christensen, and Rudy Kel- lisan, one ofthe most improved players on the team, up from the Bth grade team. Since the "B" squad furnishes future "A" squad material we stressed a fast run- ning attack, hard driving play on the backboard, and a fast shifting defense, the Pa- pooses worked on the style as their older brothers, the Warriors. By the time the first game came along the Papooses were ready for plenty of action and lots of games. Led by Captain Tom Juza and fireball Jerry Bartels who scored l74 and l62 points respectively, the team rolled up 988 points to their opponents' 847 and .won l8 and lost I2 out of 30 games played, playing such teams as Jefferson, Harrisburg, Shedd, and Monroe "A" squads, and Salem Jr. Var. Highllighting the most successful season in several years was the defeat of the Corvallis "B" squad for the first time in seven years by the score of 33-lo, a Sl-44 defeat of University Hi "B" squad, and de- feating the strong Mill City "A" squad on their own floor for the first time this year by the score of 30-25. ' This year for the first time numerals were authorized by the student council for "B" squad participation. Next year for the first time there will be a regular schedule for the "B" squads within District 7 and a trophy awarded to the championship team. Those players winning numerals for the first time are: Senior, Remmal Nivens, Juniors, Tom Juza, Harry Drapela, Ken Sims, and Don Hostetler, Sophomores, Jerry Bartels, Al Frum, Wally Campbell, Bob White, Dick Haughton, Joe Albott, and Let. Wells, and Freshman, Rudy Kellison.
