When the Lebanon grid team put their uniforms away after the last game in late w
November, they had completed one of the most successful seasons in the history of the V
school. Recognized as one of the top eight teams in the state, the Warriors piled up
the impressive record ot seven wins and one loss in the season's play. They scored a I ,
total of IO6 points while the opponents made only 5l. The local boys were victorious ,
in their first seven games and as Northern Division champions in the Tri-County League is
they lost out to the southern champion, Cottage Grove, in a playoff game.
Led by a quartet of backs who could block, tackle and run, all with equal ability,
and helped along by a heavy, powerful line, the Warriors iust had too much power
for opponents to overcome. The Lebanon gridsters used a power type of offense,
with just enough trickery to keep the other team guessing. The biggest share of ball l
carrying was handled by Captain Bill Peden at fullback and Dave Powell at haltback. f T
Bill was by for one of the outstanding fullbacks in the state and his ability to hit the
line with the power of a locomotive, mode him a very consistent ground gainer. Most if
of BilI's yardage was gained through center or inside tackle while Dave made his yard-
age outside tackle and on end runs. Dave proved to be a workhorse and he never y
knew when to stop driving. Both of these boys, by the way, were selected on the
Tri-County All-Star team and were truly deserving of this award.
The two other backs for Lebanon included Jess Ingram at quarterback and Dean X t -X
Ward at halfback. .less proved to be an outstanding field general on the gridiron and 'l A ,
this ability coupled with his savage blocking labeled him as an important cog in this I t
grid machine. Jess has been selected as captain of the i945 team and great things kg l
are expected from him next year. The other back, Dean Ward, carried the ball ver , -
little, but his consistent blocking cleared the way for many of Lebanon' uchdown . 'll'
