The Lebanon chapter of the National
Beta Club was organized October 27, 1938
with Mr. Eugene H. Sloan as sponsor. Two
years later Miss Gladys Deakins was added
as co-sponsor. To be a member of this
club a student must be approved by the
faculty and members of the club and must
make and maintain an average of 85 in
Lebanon has furnished two state officers
for Tennessee Beta Club: Nellie McDowell,
secretary and Ann Shannon, vice-presi-
dent. Since War conditions have prevent-
ed the holding of state conventions the
three clubs of Wilson County have held a
county banquet each year. The first three
banquets w e r e held in Lebanon and
sponsored by the local club. This year the

banquet was held in Watertown.
The members of the local club have
taken prominent places in student govern-
ment, athletics and other activities of the
school. This year a Beta member, Ken-
neth Patton has served as editor of the
annual and another Beta, Ware Ricketts,
with his capable staff, has edited the
"Hilltop Highlightsv for the second year.
The club has presented the school a piano,
a projector and a copy of Holman's "Head
of Christ". A donation of 3537.50 was made
to the National Beta Fund to aid students
in securing a college education.
The local club has tried to make their
school a better school and thus live up to
the Beta motto: "Achievement, Character
