Class Prophecy
I976' So many changes have come about sxnce those momentous days 1n 1956 when sen
xors all over the country crossed platforms and received dlplomas
Onjune 1 1976 I planned to meet the members of the 1956 class of I., H S I declded
to start wlth Class Pres1dent Leon Lassanske who had recently been glven the posxtxon of
Curator of the Museum of Transportatlon tn Washlngton D C Leon was easy to locate he
was lecturlng on automotive transportation I lzstened and looked at the models on dxsplay
Leon poxnted out the dlfferences ln the new cars compared to the cars of twenty years ago
The new accxdent proof car requlred no drlver and no gasohne lt operated on an atom1c tur
blne It presented a strange contrast to the antique Oldsmobzle standmg near by wluch I re
cogmzed as t.he Lassanske hmousme of 1955 Leon looked much the same except that hxs
halr was black and curly He had lost has brown crewcut after an atomlc fall out followlng a
cobalt bomb test
Proceeding to a swank cafe for luncheon 1 gave my order to a trmm lookmg waltress
whom I recogmzed as Leota Penrod She served the food almost xmmedlately merely by push
ing a few buttons and dlallng a few numbers As I ate the steak French frxes and frozen
salad I looked around thls amazxng cafe one whole wall was a plcture tube showmg plctures
and glvmg news Leota was the owner and proprletor she needed no help as the place was
easily operated by automatxc electrlcal gadgets Leota hadn t changed except that her halr
was freshly dyed each day to harmomze with her costume
As I needed a new dress for the followmg day I went to the dress shop operated by Norma
jean Merrlll Her models were dlsplaymg faslnons from bathmg sults to forrnals The new
paper dresses were znexpenslve and were meant to be dxscarded after one wearmg Norma
jean also operated a nursery where the k1dd1es were entertaxned wh1le the1r mamas shopped
This she explamed was operated on a strlctly psychologxcal basls an 1dea she worked out
when she was a high school student
I had saved the afternoon for an appo1ntment wxth Senator Alan Lassanske He was the
only real d1rt farmer ln the senate Alan had been responsmble for brmgxng many enterprxses
to hls home town Among them was the Sports Incorporated a manufacturmg concern that
made basketballs guaranteed to make baskets for the home team for at least 50 per cent of
the shots As a result of these enterprxses Lebanon had become a l1ttle c1ty of 10 000 Alan
was also responslble for the moving of the county seat to Lebanon I dldn t flnd him ln hls
office he had just left for h1s country home from whlch he commuted to work wearmg shoulder
jets though some of h1s assoczates still use the old fashioned hellcopter
As I taxled back to my hotel I resolved to v1s1t the Art Museuxn the next day to see what
changes had been made tn the so called Modern Art of 1955
