They're the repair specialists on LEAHY. 6429C9t 21 22 GPERATIU DE WERT STGR l As LEAH Y heads off to War, QM2 Annas conveys the feelings of the crew. With little more than a month to our departure date, the first air attacks on Iraq and Kuwait began Operation Desert Storm. It seemed that the inevitable had happened and LEAHY was being drawn into war in the Middle East. To hear of war in some distant land is one thing. To face the prospect of in- volvement, to actually go to war and per- haps pay the price all wars require, is an- other. Each of us had to find the answers within. ' f Probably the most frightening thing that can happen aboard a ship at sea isfirgafiz The reason for this is simple. There's no where to run. The fire has to be putoutooim all hands will perish. Because of this, fire fighting training is a constantly ongoing evolution. The meuafe on board LEAHY must be in a constant state of readiness against possible liresaees t 5 . V l Tracking fire Hgh ter 'S progress in D. C. Central All photos this page by HTI John B ' The weather took a nasty turn during our blue water transit toward Hawaii. The flow pressure center that found us stayed with us for almost the entire six day iejourney. . A ,g The seas were by far the roughest that even the veterans among us had seen in a livery long time. Many of the newest members of our crew found out what sea isidcness really means. With rolls up to 30 degrees lfrom either side of centerlinel, even the most ordinary tasks took on a new level of difficulty. .1 m :Z V D AND RAIN ' S103 Thomas Mullins Q .nasal 63 PEARL HARBGR HI Uma aff ,, A- A 1 Q in A A X ,K , . , . .., .. , . . , x ...,,. .. . ,, . . Hawaii was our first and last stop. Un- fortunately, due of a tight schedule, our time spent there was very limited. On the way home, one day was all the time we had, and it was a work day at that. just enough time to take on sup-l plies, welcome aboard the TIGERS, and set sail for San Diego. 65 ' SS WHIPPLE CFP 10625 M We arrived in Hawaii independently. We departed with the USS WHIPPLE. A Fast Frigate KFFJ homeported in Pearl Harbor, the WHIPPLE was assigned to re- lieve the USS IARRETT in the Gulf. She would be our constant companion for the next month in our transit and also on the return trip. Much of our continuing training was in conjunction with her, and together we honed our abilities and skills, while enjoy- ing the port stops along the way. On a couple occasions, the WHIPPLE and her crew came to our aid when we needed it, supplying fire fighters at the ready, and meals on her messdecks. Sometimes it was nice just to know she was there. 66 . ,.. ,X ,LL Q.,Q,g' ,Ng - My-f'2v,g-K 'H-vfgw H rn m r' ov E O I WH VE H V911 Q! 5 I 1.m N SW 21 918 P1211 s , 'U 45-4f -Hr-hnuunan-q X Tw ,, ' 910.129 5- Q-Q. 39913 3252 --.n n w co UQ ESQQEQQQQQQBIET E.-4-mf7fDf7QQq',,,17rm3-2 N:-j.h-h fb--ua:-O'HE N4 -4093338 Ec2amE,392,,gm -H0 fp -n-' CJ C 1 :..Q.. While at sea, mail was our only link with the rest of the world and with life back home. ' Mail arrived in a variety of ways. At most of the port stops it was waiting for us on the pier. During our time in the Gulf, the Desert Duck occasionally flewin. There were other helos and small boat ops too. But however it got to us, it was always welcome. A few words from home could make the difference between a bad day and a great one. . During Operation Desert Storm literally millions of Ameri- cans wrote to express their support for the troops. Some of this mail made its way to the LEAHY. Quite a few new friends were made this way, and it served to break up those dry spells fsome as long as a monthl when our mail was nowhere to be found. f To all those who took the time to write, we can never thank you enough. You helped pull us through when we were down, reminded us why we were there, and gave us renewed strength to finish the job and get back home. 919190 P-'3lI9!2I NSWH 1 DS2 Michael Lay , -AQ.
