That is why this page has been devoted to our custodians. Fred Van Pelt has done a wonderful job in the Senior high building. Don Barnard has taken care of the Junior high, in which our shop and domestic science classes are located. Frank Blatnick has had the care of our gym. Not only did he keep it clean for us, but he also helped whenever we had our parties, and especially, on the Junior-Senior Prom. They have all worked hard and we owe much to their patience and friendliness. The lessons we have learned so well, To the whole world we'1l tell. Your memory will live with us And will go on with trust. Saluting you--we travel on The class of '59. Mary O'Leary Joann Stevens CLASS MOTTO Climb Though the Rocks Be Rugged CLASS FLOWER Sweetheart Rose CLASS COLORS Black and Gold CLASS POEM Dear Leadville High, we leave you now, and as we go we take a bow. For we have reached the highest goal, of which you've played the leading role. Three years ago, we entered here To accept the knowledge you held so dear The teachers gave their precious time To help us conquer the long hard climb. Although we worked, we also playedg The rock of success we firmly laid. We had our fun and passed the test, And now we leave with joy expressed. When our turn comes, to travel the road, We'll hold our heads high and carry our load. For life has many treasures, waiting for usg We'll seek and we'1l find, with faith and trust. We then boasted of a membership of seventy, now because of certain difficulties, we only have forty -seven Seniors. We chose Eugene Evans as Prexy of the Sophomoresg Bonnie Davies, Vice-President Barbara Carson, Secretaryg Joann Stevens, Treasurerg Barbara Romaine, Historian, and Jim Burger, Reporter. Student Council Representatives were Virginia Stout and Gary Koepping. At the Sophomore skit we gave a presentation of a weddingg all were in costume. Although we were very good, the juniors were better with their circus parade. As Juniors we elected Jimmy Burger as President, Leroy Hieter, Vice -president, Joann Stevens, Treasurer: Francie French, Reporterg Mary O'Leary, Historianp Jean Drobnick and Tuffy Gray, Student Council Representatives. At the senior all-school party, the Seniors -to-be took all honors for their presenta- tion of a saga of man from the prehistoric up to the modern teens and their jazz. One of the high points of the Junior class was the choosing of the class rings, which we did unanimously. We also presented Mr. Kerrigan with our class ring. No other class ring will ever compare with them. Our first major achievement was the Junior Play, THE ANTICS OF ANDREW, which was a great success when it was presented. As we started our work on the Prom we fooled everyone by saying the theme was Cemetery Serenade. Actually, it was Moonlight and Roses and it was the best Junior Prom ever to be given. It was beautifully decorated with a little Chateau at the far end with a rose-strewn fence along the sides. We have done very well in sports and several members of our class helped to win the District Championship and also went to State in basketball. Our Senior year started under the leadership of Leroy Hieter, President, Jean Drobnick, Vice -presidentg Elva Jean Vidick, Secretary, Joann Stevens, Treasurer: Bobby Tinkle, I-listoriang Rose Marie Strell, Reporter, Steve Lani and Beulah Dal Piaz, Student Council Representatives, and Mr. Kerrigan remained as our sponsor. The Sen- ior all-school party was a huge success. On November 24 we selected our announce- ments and calling cards. Our Senior Fair was postponed until April 10 and 11. The theme was Leadville, 1880. Our booths were decorated as buildings in the early days of Leadville and the costumes were in the styles of the early days. Everyone had a marvelous time. Slouch Day and Skip Day were held and immensely enjoyed by all the Seniors. The underclassmen were entertained by an interesting program on Slouch Day. This week-end we will take our trip day as the last outing of a very successful year. On Sunday, Baccalaureate services will be held. June 2, we will officially become graduates of L. H. S. with the Commencement exercises, ending three most enjoyable years. by Bob Tinkle Congratulations to the Class of '59! I! At the annual All-School Party in.September, we took first place with our class stunt portraying the seniors as they will be fifty years from now. In October, we held an All-School Clash Party. Charleen Gabardi and Gordon Burk won first prize for wearing the clashiest colors. Also in October, Susan Roll and Gordon Conklin were chosen to represent the juniors as attendants to the Mardi Gras king and queen. Our float, Autumn Nocturne was featured in the Mardi Gras parade. A high spot in our year was the presentation of our class play, Where's Charlie? T F TI, Du. M B avi Q ' J4..Cr M54 S.,gfoK: 234-17 I X Climb, Though the Rocks be Rugged As we approached the foot of the trail leading up the mountain, the meadow was green and inviting. But we turned our backs on the temptation to remain here, and bade farewell to our sunny, carefree hours at the stream crossing the trail when we entered the first grade. The trail leading to the top of the snow-covered peak began as a gently sloping, smooth roadway. As we climbed higher on our journey through school, the trail became steeper and rockier. At first we followed our smooth pathway through the pleasant forest, pine needles making a soft carpet beneath our feet. Occasionally, we ran across rocks in our way, but our teachers helped us to cross these bar- riers. When we had conquered one obstacle, we were ready to tackle the next one. Eventually we came to rely more on ourselves to solve our problems. Our elementary years went by, swiftly for some, more slowly for others. Each grade was a height on our mountain trail and represented an attainment, we had successfully overcome the steep, rocky parts of the trail to accomplish part of our goal. Finally, the trees were replaced by grass. We had reached timberline and our high school years had begun. There were times when the poorly marked, rock-strewn path through the carpet of grass seemed insurmountable, but a look at the beautiful flowers, enhancing the green with their rainbow hues, encouraged us. These beauties of our surroundings reminded us of the pleasures of our trip to the top. Then the big year arrived. We were ready, as Seniors, to start the last leg of our climb. The grass gave way to rocks of all sizes and shapes. ln order to reach the summit, it was necessary to climb over the stones. Some- times the trail seemed very long and almost too steep and rocky to follow. However, by not giving up, we reached the summit of the mountain. Now as we look back down the trail to the valley far below, shaded by passing clouds and dotted with lakes and streams, we realize that we have conquered each obstacle and are now prepared to follow another trail to a different peak. From here each graduating Senior will take a different trail. Every trail will lead to a mountain to be climbed. Although at times we may feel like giving up, no mountain is so steep or so rugged that we will not reach the goal if we Climb though the rocks be rugged. Congratulations, Seniors! Mr. and Mrs. OSCAR M. DAVIES Thinking Makes It So According to the publishers of a series of books on mental efficiency, Impul- siveness of thought leads to impulsive- ness of action. This is an example of how your thoughts affect your life. From day to day consider your thoughts and plan each move you make. Acquire the habit of not acting upon impulses, and when the time to make an important decision in your life comes, you will be prepared. Thoughts are things. Have you ever thought that someone was disgusted or unhappy with you? As a result of your thoughts, your attitude towards that person was changed and soon he was acting just as you thought. It is almost the same about making mountains out of mole hills. Thinking a task is hard usually makes it more difficult. If you use an I can attitude on it, you will be able to do it and overcome almost any obstacle in your life. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be doneg there are thousands to prophesy failure . . . Just start to sing as you tackle the thing that 'cannot be done' and you will do it. From a poem by Edgar Guest. See what you want and never lose sight of it. Think about it. Reason out the problems standing between you and your goal. Then work. You can't just sit in your rocking chair and think about being a doctor or a lawyerg ,you must work. As you think and work, you will be traveling towards your goal. Think high, aim high and you will strike high. No matter. what field you are interested in, the field of housekeeping included, do the best that you can. It isn't by size that you win or you fail--Be the best of whatever you are. When I attended Girls' State, I was impressed especially by this quote from the Philosophy of James Allen, which was in our manuals: As you think, you travel, and as you love, you attract. You are today where your thoughts have brought youg You will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you. You cannot escape the results of your thoughtsg but you can endure and learn, can accept and be glad. You will realize the vision--not the idle wish--of your heart, be it base or beautiful or a mixture of both, for you will always gravitate towards that which you, secretly, most love. ln your hands will be placed the exact results of your thoughts. You will receive that which you earng no more, no less. Whatever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain, or rise with your thoughts, your wisdom, your ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire, as great as your DOMINANT ASPIRATION. Congratulations, Seniors! B. P. O. ELKS, Leadville Lodge No. 236 Boy Most Representative Girl A cheerful personality and a vivacious character are always present when Mary O'Leary is in the vicinity. An excellent student, Mary has been very careful of her scholastic record. She has always been available to assist anyone who was in the least bit of difficulty or has felt down trodden. A big smile and a cute twinkle in her eye have been a trade mark of Mary since we have been affiliated with her. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Mary will make a success of anything that she attempts. Most Representative Through the years, everyone connected with Jim Burger in any way has found him to be not only very willing to give his assistance at any task, but also completely capable of thoroughly and satisfactorily completing the assignment. His leadership qualities and determination to have each duty per- formed efficiently have given him a very high ranking among teachers and students alike. A friendly disposition and a definite interest in individuals have helped determine his extensive popularity. We all hope that Jim gets whatever he strives for in life, and that he will be able to fulfill each obligation of his chosen field. 74 v a fix Leadville 1959 G John Phillip Sousa All-Ameriean City 0 e n Memorial Award Records t fi' 1 x ,5 o is X f 5 Leadville Panthels xr 18 Straight Wins, '57-'58 J L ie ffiifisiifilr Rho f,j2?5ff' .
