INTERCLASS BASKETBALL Carl Miller, Le Moine Sigwart, Billy Roberts, Jim Valdez, Ray Larsh, Mike lane, Joe Maestas, left: Coach Albert O'Leary. B'k 2!'q lnterclass basketball tournament for 1955 opened on Monday, March 28, with four teams competing: the Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Faculty. Due to the reorganization of the school system this year the eighth and ninth grades were dropped from the high school interclass and participated in intramural sports on the junior high level. Because of this, the faculty entered a team for the first time in many years. Two games were played on the opening day with the Faculty taking an easy victory over the seniors while the iuniors were hard pressed to defeat the sophomores, ln the semi-finals the following night the fans witnessed the best game of the tournament when the faculty team edged the juniors by one point. Meanwhile, in the loser's bracket, the sophomores defeated the seniors for the right to meet the juniors. The iuniors again defeated the sophomores to gain the finals with the faculty. This game was played Friday, April 1. This time the faculty won an easy victory over the iuniors to win the championship. However, the iuniors were awarded the championship for having defeated the other student teams. Members of the faculty team were: Popish, Schaefer, Castren, Stoner, Kerrigan, Hovorka, and Wilks. tg ,5 fjffffifffifififl The Momzt Massive Sentinel jjjjjgjjjjjjjjjj' to 1 . Salida finished in the cellar. The Panthers had four returning lettermen arol nd which to build the squad. These were John Cook Alfred and Albert O'Leary, and Mike Hinds. These boys came through in fine style, with Cook placing on the All-Conference team and the O'Leary twins rece'ving honorable mention. The Panthers were a young and inexperienced team this year, but nine of the first ten squadmen are returning for next year's campaign. With this formidable group of veterans returning, Leadville has high hopes of a championship team for the 1955-56 season. Rego Omergic is the sole senior on the team. Re- turning lettermen are John Cook, Alf. O'Leary, Alb. O'Leary, Mike Hinds, Dave Hinds, Ronald Neff, Man- ual Mondragon, Bill Roberts, and Kenny Arnold. The 1954-55 season brings to an end the old San Luis Valley A Leaaue. Durango and Cortez wil' no longer participate in this league, both being in tie AA classification. The new San Louis Valley A League will have the following members: Alamosa, Del Norte, Monta Vista, Salida, Walsenburg, Leadville, and possibly Primero.
