w+'++m'+++ The Mount Masszve Sentznelwfffwfw NOT THE END BUT THE BEGINNING Thls year our class IS very proud to be able to ded1cate our annual to the annlversary of the blrth on July 14 1877 that has made our IIVCS rlcher today Seventy five years ago the first Leadvllle school had its begmmng 1n a small one room Cabln bu1lt ln 1878 Wlth an enrollment of 32 Because of the great mlgratlon of mlners to the new ore fields lt was ev1dent that a need for larger and better fac1l1t1es was presslng and ln 1881 Central School was completed Still the fac1l1t1es were lnsufiiclent so Nm th Street School Seventh Street School and Carbonate H111 School were bu1lt ln 1882 In 1889 because of the growth 1n populatlon and the des1re to have hlgher education the Hlgh School was expanded from a few rooms ln the grade schools to a new blllldlllg W1th the lncrease 1n the number of students an Annex was constructed ln 1943 The d1str1ct has grown from 32 students to a total of 902 Today Leadvllle s pop ulatlon 1S on the lncrease and more and more ch1ldren enter lts schools Where are we golng to educate these ch1ldren ln the proper way and under proper condltlons so that one teacher w1ll not have 50 ch1ldren under her? The only answer 1S anoth er school or an add1t1on to those we have A survey IS bemg conducted to find out our needs and cost of such an add1t1on or the bulldmg of another school In t1me th1s survey w1ll be released to the publ1c Wlth a hope of calllng for a bondlng elect1on These w1ll only be the 1n1t1al steps The rest w1ll depend upon the c1t1zens They w1ll decide the fate of a new school bu1ld1ng or an add1t1on Many opportumtles and achlevements now depend upon educatlon In earher days you through l1fe successfully today men wlth college educatlons are preferred In the future the need for educatlon w1ll be even greater Of st1ll greater 1mportance IS the tra1n1ng of students 1n government economlcs and techn1cal fields Our generation w1ll be tomorrow s government If we are ed ucated IH the proper way we can hop to find peaceful solutlons to the grave dang ers wh1ch confront us today and Wh1Ch are now met on the battlefield Today we have dev1ces such as automoblles and alrplanes wh1ch a1d us 1n maklng our l1ves full er and more enjoyable If we are to cont1nue w1th the techn1cal advancement that brlngs us these benefits Arnerlca s youth must be educated 1n every field to meet the demands for more and more advancements along these llnes If new generations of AIIIBFICHHS are to be educated we need fac1l1t1es 1n wh1ch to educate them We the graduat1ng class reallzlng the need for better accommodatlons appeal to you to help see that those who follow us are provlded Wlth bulldlngs 1n wh1ch to study and learn For the educatlon that each Sen1or has attamed we are lndebted to the D1str1ct Wlth 1tS adm1n1strat1on and many fine teachers We shall never forget that what ever successes we achieve ln our future IIVCS must be partlally attrlbuted to the ed ucatlon that we have gamed 1n our early school years and bu1lt upon durmg our hlgh school days We thank the founders and early admlnlstrators who strove to glVe us what we have today We hope whatever plans for add1t1ons to the D1str1ct are presented to the publ1c w1ll be recelved w1th the conv1ct1on that only through the betterment of our schools can we have educated c1t1zens and only through the rlght kmd of educatlon can we and our ch1ldren have better and more peaceful l1ves Clearly for the D1str1ct as well as our class 1952 marks Not the end but the beglnnmg foie dMa'u.s XLJI zwz flfaf J sfo-1 an ! if you had graduated from the eighth grade. you had an education that would carry ' Q ' I , .5 i i

H+4+++m4 The Mount Masszve Sentznelffmfffmf EDUCA TION STYMIES COMMUNISM Those of us who are graduatlng tonlght should be very grateful for the educatlon we have recelved In thls day and age an educatlon IS of prlme lmportance because the struggle agalnst communlsm has made study more necess ary than ever To stop the spread of communlsm we must know what communlsm IS and how to fight It If people do ' not know why commumsm 1S undeslrable they won t know why there IS any reason to be agalnst lt Communlsts have made thelr best galns after World War II because the l1v1ng and educatlonal standards of many of the countrles of the world have been very low The people ln these countrles have been wllllng to llsten to anybody who professes to be able to lmprove the condltlons Thls state of affalrs makes a country rlpe for the spread of communlsm We see proof of thls lncrease of communlsm ln the many countrles that have fallen under communlst domlnatlon slnce the war such as Poland Bul garla and Chlna Once the communlsts have a country ln thelr grasp they set controls on everythlng detrlmental to thelr purpose One of thelr maln worrles IS the schools for they rea llze that people who fully understand communlsm wlll not except It therefore they completely supervlse educatlon and make sure that there IS nothlng taught that op poses communlstlc doctrlnes ThlS obvlous fear of educatlon lndlcates a very eifectlve weapon vvlth whlch to fight communlsm If we utlllze thls weapon the spread of communlsm can be checked Already a great deal has been done ln thls dlrectlon The Crusade for Freedom cam palgn to ralse funds to carry the truth to people ln communlst domlnated countrles IS a very strlklng example Those who organlzed the campalgn and those who sup events ln the world Educatlon also plays a very lmportant part ln preparlng those countrles Wh1Ch have not yet been taken over by communlsm to 'light agalnst It The cltlzens of these countrles must not only be told about the evlls of communlsm but must be ed ucated technlcally so thev can ralse the llvlng standards of thelr country We must remember that many of these natlons are ln the process of recoverlng from a very devastatlng war whlch left thousands homeless and wlthout work Some of these must be lnstructed ln the use of machlnes and ln other skllled work Others must learn the modern m thods of farmlng whlch wlll 1'nprove thelr productlon After the standard of llvlng ln these countrles lS ralsed the struggle agalnst communlsm IS more than half won for people that are satlsfied and well educated wlll have noth mg to do Wlth communlsm The United States has been the leader ln the fight agalnst communlsm ever slnce lt started b cause our country has been the best sulted to lead the iight Thls na tlon was founded on the assumptlon that every man has certaln rlghts whlch cannot be taken away from hlm It 19 thls bellef ln human rlghts that makes our country an excellent opponent for communlsm After studylng and comparlng our government wlth those of the rest of the world we find that nowhere else ln the world IS there the freedom and opportunlty that there IS ln Amerlca We see why a llb ral educatlon IS so Important ln preservlng our democracy Educatlon IS a potent weapon for use agalnst communlsm As long as the evlls of communlsm are exposed and our country remalns economlcally strong commun lsm wlll make no progress That IS why I say we should b grat ful for the educa tlon we have recelved for as a result of what we have learned we are prepared to help keep our country the democratlc and freedom lovlng natlon lt has always been los llcC7o f Q1 Elf 'u. z 7 6 u Q a ' , ported lt realized how important it is that these people be informed truthfully about K : ' rzrzz Al. fl: t o 'ur
