The mnunt Jlllassmc 'Sentinel Fznzshea' Yet Begznmng Each year many young men and women are graduated from varlous hlgh schools all over the country As we recelve our dlplomas on our commencement nlght we are finlshlng w1th the only way of llfe that we have ever known Up to now other people have l1ved most of our llves for us Our teachers have planned our school days and our parents and our frlends have taken up the rest of our tlme We have been clothed and fed and housed by our parents Our wholellfe has been dlrected thoughtfully from day to day Our commencement 1S not an endlng however but a beglnnlng When we recelve our dlplomas we are to begln a completely new and dlfferent way of l1fe We must take up where our parents and teachers have so abruptly left off We must do our own thlnkmg and planmng It IS up to each one of us what we alone w1ll do wlth our l1ves There are many opportumtles for the hlgh school graduates of today 1n Amer1ca We may go ahead wrth our educatlon 1n un1vers1t1es colleges or schools of speclallzed tralnlng Some of us Wlll go to the colleges others may enter these schools of specla llzed tralnmg and some w1ll Join the armed forces of our country But for the majorlty of us our formal educatron IS at an end wlth our graduatron from h1gh school It IS more of a beglnnlng for those of us who must take our place 1n llfe as 1nd1v1duals and start to make our own way than It IS for us who w1ll enter the colleges and un1vers1t1es In college part of the plannlng and thmklng w1ll be done for us by our lnstructors Gettlng the work done however IS entlrely up to us It 1S our responslblllty to obtam selves Not only are the colleges and un1vers1t1es there for us to obtaln our advanced ed ucatlon but they w1ll help us ln every way they can so that we may contlnue w1th our schoollng They have SBFVICSS to help us find part tlme work so that we may work our way through They offe many driferent kmds of scholarshlps walvers of tu1t1on and other forms of financlal help to those of us who quahfy They have counsellng and guldance serv1ces that w1ll h lp us to get what we want out of our college career and they w1ll offer advlce that w1ll benefit us durlng our college llfe The fact that a person holds a college degree IS not always an assurance that the holder IS an educated person He may have fa1led 1n hls efforts to make the lncome sufficlent to enable hlm to l1ve on the plane WhlCh he 1S prepared to l1ve The two prmcxpal purposes of an educaflon are to teach people how to l1V9 and to teach them how to make thelr l1v1ng They must so co ordmate the1r knowledge that they w1ll make sufliclent lncome to l1ve and enjoy l1v1ng on the plane they deslre Knowledge IS necessary to good government and the happiness of manklnd therefore schools and educatlon shall always be encouraged Thls concern for educatlon has almost become a rel1g1on to the Amerlcan people No other people ever demanded so much of educatlon as have the Americans and no other country was ever served so well by 1tS schools and educators These are the rea sons why they w1ll strlve to contlnue and unprove our means of education so that the falth that has been placed 1n educatlon IH the past may be greatly enlarged 1n the future ReallZ1Hg that the quest for educatlon IS endless I am remlnded of these hnes by Charles G Rossettl Does the road wlnd up h1ll all the way'7 Yes to the very end Wlll the Journey take the whole long day?
