Salutatory The Spirit of America is Eternal Jessie Jeanne McMurrough What is the Spirit of America? The Spirit of America is the spirit that makes one meet the present with confidence and determination and face the future with faith and courage faith not only in ones cause but faith in ones self Faith in ones self will do more to win a struggle than all else combined If our forefathers had not had faith in themselves there would be no American Republic today The Spirit of America is the spirit that bamshes all thought of fear or failure It is the spirit we see written on the walls of the Nation and in every page of American his tory It was the Spirit of America that enabled our forefathers to endure almost eight long and dreary years of strife and struggle suffering and privation and from the might of kmgs finally wrest American Independence that gave the bless ings of Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness which we are now enJo It is the Splrit of America that made it possible for us to become in only a tury and a half the greatest and most powerful nation on earth advancing manner unparalleled ln the annals of civilization in science and art culture education commerce and government giving the world the most inspiring romantic example of territorial expansion and national growth ln all history Americans have the Spirit of America because of our American ideals institutions which liberating the minds and stirring the soul creates fine cepts sturdy principles stupendous energy and tremendous ambition ylllg cen in a and and and con The Spirit of America finds its most lofty expression in terms of spiritual development Freedom of religion is one of man s most cherished rights for which he suffered and sacrificed for centuries Religion is eternal Christ has lned in the minds and hearts of people for almost 2 000 years and will do so eternally You Americans need not be reminded that you took something into the first World War far more vital than your service equipment You took something into that which was not lost in the trenches or on the battlefield and you brought something home That something was a soul quality which found spiritual expres sion in a pattern of citizenship based on the cherished ethics of a Christian c1v1l ization And you brought something home besides scars and haunting pictures of ghastlmess You returned with a consciousness of the ideals which have preserved our American standards The Spirit of America IS also found in Education We have today the finest public school system on earth I'he progress that education has made in this country is unparalleled In historv There are more students in our American high schools than in schools in all other countries combined. Likewise we have more of our youth in colleges and universities than all the rest of the world put together. But today when the youth of America faces the realization that they may lose this freedom of religion and education they are willing to lay aside tem- porarily the cherished plans and hopes of careers to assume its place and respon- sibilities in the vibrant march of the great army of democracy. Our forefathers made such sacrifices to establish a nation where the God given privileges of free- dom could be enjoyed by all. Now that freedom of not only our generation but of future generations is threatened we have no greater satisfaction than to dedicate our efforts to the continuation of the principles of Christianity and democracy. We the youth of America must take America tight to our hearts and love America for its Americanism. There is no way to face but forward. There should be no ism' but that of patriotism. And we shall not forget those God given qualities of sureness of strength of courage and of vigilance which has made the eagle a symbol of this nation and its sharpness of eye and smoothness of speed svm- bolical of the swiftness and unity with which we met and defeated an alien effort against our heritages. We shall take no course but that which defends the Stars and Stripes' which represents liberty and justice. This generation and future gen- erations will do their best to see that Old Glory waves triumphantly over the land of the free and the home of the brave and that it stands for everything that is good. In confronting any obstacle however insurmountable it may seem' in fighting any of lifes battles however hopeless and discouraging they may appear if we have in our heart the Spirit of America we will win. Yes. the Spirit of America ls Eternal! 1 ff 1 -fre' S eaee THE MOUNT MASSIVE SENTINEL -++afe 1 f f

Valedzctory This Senior Class graduates tonight facrng a world xx ar torn and confronted with many problems but also a vi orld with more opportunities to serve than has any Senior Class since the first American school held commencement exercises We leaxe here tonight not knowing what may happen to anyone of us We know that the task before us rg a great one It is our duty as vtell as our privilege to serve our country the best xx ay we can to help her live through this terrible cr isis Much has been done in our behalf to make rt easier for us to serve Today we come to the end of one phase of our education We have profited by the benefit of trained leaders from the time that the first public high school was established by Benjamin Franklin We haye been gn en an opportunity to learn some of the neces better rn time of war' Our teachers have done their best to establish these things rn our mmds What we do now depends entirely upon ourselx es We have been given the tools with which to work and whether we do our part now rests upon us alone All education rs for service and he who finally renders the best service to his fellowmen rs truly educated Our country wants educated people to serve her This rs shown by the fact that those who kept up their work rn high school are not called to the Armed Ser vrces during a school year and that the Armed Services are sending many trainees back to college to complete or extend their training This war rs a mechanized war, and therefore education plays a very great role Those rn school must now as never before do then best not only for their ovxn good but also for the good of their country Our country is counting on us to do our part Great responsrbrlitres rest upon us The youth of America will go a long way in the winning of this wal Some will serve on the battlefields some rn industry some rn the homes hospitals and in countless other places The youth of America will also play a large part rn the writing of the peace terms and the formation of the post-war world. This is shown by the fact that much school time is given to current history and problems. and that the young people in Colorado were allowed to meet and discuss post-war problems and organization as their State debate question this year, We not only must take advantage of our educational background but everyone of us must serx c. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and a democratic nation is only as strong as it poorest citizen. It is our duty to do everything we can to serve our country now. For us there is both duty and responsibility. If the world of the future is not what it should be-each one of us is to blame. Every man woman and child in our country must serve in the way that he or she will do the most good. We will see this thing through and we want to be able to say when it is all over that we did our part in the winning of this vt ar. and that by our services now we are able to make it possible for others to have the same privileges and op- portunities that we Americans enjoy. It is for us to serve in all fields of human actixity. and by our lives. our ideals. and our achievements. make contributions of lasting value to our fellowmen-FACH OF US MUST SERVE! Robert N. After the program the upper-classmen paraded down the avenue and through the main business houses of town taking things under their control. In the evening the slouchers attended the show. At the show the stage was turned ox er to them and each class member was introduced by the mistress of ceremonies. Jessie Jeanne McMurrough. Then the class formed a conga line on the stage.
