We had arrix ed at that final year which started by electing Jessie Jeanne McMurrough president: Donald Larsh. vice-president: Frances Zakraisek secretary: Irene Nadon treasurer. and Frank Hren, historian. To start this Year right for us and the rest of the school. we gave the All School party on Sept. 11 1942. This year we the Seniors gaxe a Senior Fair called the Harvest Festival' on Sept. 25 and 26 1942. It vias a very great success. On Nov. 20, 1942 we attended a swell' party given by the Juniors. A new and our last semester arrixed. Frank Hren resigned as historian and Natalie Jean Nash was elected in his place. The hustle and bustle of graduating was in the air. In April and May we just rushed from one thing to another. Things hap- pened right and left. We went to work on the Annual. Slouch Day was April 16 1943. The Prom yeas May 24 1943. Skip Day was April 28. This year because of no gasoline and no food we first gave up our day trip and then our Senior Banquet but the Senior dance was held May 28, 1943. Our only hope is that our little sacrifice shall help with the winning of the war. Class Day on May 28 was given proudly to our families friends and the underclassmen. Miss Kelly. our new sponsor, helped us through this last year with her untiring efforts. Likewise we have more of our youth in colleges and universities than all the rest of the world put together. But today when the youth of America faces the realization that they may lose this freedom of religion and education they are willing to lay aside tem- porarily the cherished plans and hopes of careers to assume its place and respon- sibilities in the vibrant march of the great army of democracy. Our forefathers made such sacrifices to establish a nation where the God given privileges of free- dom could be enjoyed by all. Now that freedom of not only our generation but of future generations is threatened we have no greater satisfaction than to dedicate our efforts to the continuation of the principles of Christianity and democracy. We the youth of America must take America tight to our hearts and love America for its Americanism. There is no way to face but forward. There should be no ism' but that of patriotism. And we shall not forget those God given qualities of sureness of strength of courage and of vigilance which has made the eagle a symbol of this nation and its sharpness of eye and smoothness of speed svm- bolical of the swiftness and unity with which we met and defeated an alien effort against our heritages. We shall take no course but that which defends the Stars and Stripes' which represents liberty and justice. Yes. the Spirit of America ls Eternal! 1 ff 1 -fre' S eaee THE MOUNT MASSIVE SENTINEL -++afe 1 f f Slouch Day Ill be glad when tomorrow comes was the thought 1n the minds of the L H S seniors the day before the annual Slouch Day program and in the minds of all the merchants and citizens of our fair city on April 16 when Slouch Dav was held The Seniors dressed in about ex ery costume imaginable put on their program for the under-classmen and friends intthe auditorium. This pro- gram consisted of songs history re fiews murder mysteries a brief peek into a subbie class. a typical class at L. H. S. and the burial of the faculty. After the program the upper-classmen paraded down the avenue and through the main business houses of town taking things under their control. In the evening the slouchers attended the show. At the show the stage was turned ox er to them and each class member was introduced by the mistress of ceremonies. Jessie Jeanne McMurrough. Then the class formed a conga line on the stage. Those in the club that were already good skiers learned more about the art. while the members that were new on skis learned the fundamentals of skiing. The club took their lunch and enjoy ed Cross-Country hikes on their skis on two different Saturdays. Club members and their guests also enjoy ed a dance in the Annex on February 12. The outstanding actix ity of the year was a school ski meet held on April 4, at the Leadxille Ski Course. Debates on various questions were held ex erx Tuesdav. Miss Nell Perkinson was coach of the debate club. The State Tournament was held in Boulder March 18-19 1943. The em- phasis was on debate the state question being: Resolved: That a Federal World Government Should Be Established. Special features such as ora- tory extemporaneous speaking and after-dinner speaking were also en- gaged in by the various schools. Each school was rated as superior excellent good or unrated. Mr. Stender was director of this group and Miss Kellv accompanist. One of the outstanding events of the year was a Christmas Cantata en- titled Yuletide Memories which was presented at the A. A. U. W. caroling session held at the Elks Opera House on December 21 1942 and also at an assembly in the high school auditorium on December 23 1942. This cantata proved very successful. The girls were dressed in white with red ribbons of crepe paper around their necks. A spotlight was placed on the girls during the entire program. The girls sang varous patriotic numbers at the Victory Band Concert on March 12 1943. The band is directed by 'VIr. Stender. The band gave its first concert on November 10. It was a Partiotic Concert. A second concert was given on March 12 and was called a Vic- torv Concert. To end another successful year the band gave its last concert on May 7. At each of these concerts solos were rendered by different members of the organization. These concerts showed a considerable amount of preparation and ability on the part of those who willingly rendered the selections. Because of tire shortages and no gasoline, the activities of the pep club were rather limited this year but everyone took it smiling and made the best of it. At the first meeting of th vear William Conklin was chosen pres- ident and was the only officer elected as there was no need for others be- cause of limited activity. Addie Mae Smith, William Conklin, and Katheryn Crowell, were chosen cheerleaders again this vear, while Nina Copper, Isabelle Bowen, Ramona Bertolas, and Dolores Holden were chosen as assistant cheer leaders for the year. These girls did an excellent job of assisting as leaders at all the games. Only three games were played in Leadville but they were good games and there was a fine turn-out.
