I-Ir Jn? awe 5, Somewhere in the Phillippines Dear Sam, Another school year has passed--nine more eventful months--and each of us is an- other year older. Soon, if we're lucky, our high school days will be over. But even so, we'll be glad to have this to look back on! It was rather difficult to start back to school after such a delicious summer. We were reluctant to discard tennis, learner's permits, and weekly pay cheeks for the lm- posslbilities of solid and U.S. History at such an early date. While city schools were still enjoying the freedom of an unfettered summer, our Juniors were bravely lighting their lamps of knowledge, preparing for a long winter's stand. The only joy that warmed our saddened hearts was the thought of an early release from these four walls. Life was uneventful for two more months, consisting of sunshine and shadows, then suddenly Sadie Hawkins was upon us. The eleventh grade's more serious thought-- the man shortage and east side blondes--were con- stantly belng interrupted by flurrled under- classmen dashing after dates. QAh! Dates! Sweet Memories!J The dance was a howling sucoessg we lit- erally ate up the profits. The tempo of class activities slowed down over Thanksgiving. Chilly weather caused the jaunty juniors to burrow deeper under the covers and cast disgusted looks at the alarm clock. 1945 had e had start, as does every year, with semester exams, but many low minds were quickly brightened by the 'Heart Beat Dance' which was jointly sponsored by the eleventh and twelfth grades. The gym was decorated cleverly by the more artistically inclined of our student body, and cakes and pop help- ed to make the affair even more enjoyable. Soon after the 'Heart Beat Dance,' the juniors entertained all the lower grades with a designed to please movie. Several short subjects were used instead of the usual full length show, thus giving a novel twist to an old custom. Little concentrating was accomplished the last week of February las per usuall. Our rings came then, and they were every bit as beautiful as we remembered them. Gold 'LP'S' set upon gold or onyx centers, with the date inscribed on either side of the settings, gave a delightful appearance to a class keep- sake. A first robin was heard the other day, and so our juniors' thoughts must lightly turn to thoughts of a prom. Judging from the past, many heated debates will take place in 208 before this all-important question is com- pletely discussed and arranged to the satis- faction of everyone. But regardless of the ferocity of the argurents, the Prom is sure to be the perfect ending to a gay and prosperous eleventh year. O. 84110845 cfo Pos tmas ter San Francisco California Dear Jopal, Gee, how tempus does fuglt! It seems like only yesterday that we first walked through the doors of lll-112, our homeroom. At first, noise and loud laughter predominated, but soon teachers fact, no shout. The found us under the watchful eyes of three the room became more subdued. In one was permitted to speak above a first few weeks of our Sophomore year running in circles ----- chasing bees, butterflies, and spiders for biology. Those who had a distaste for Mrs. Tuttle's little pets soon displayed different attitudes for the sake field, a of passing 'bugology.' In this same little later, the task of dissecting these little creatures confronted us. Many a student had to leave the room while be was still 'deep in the heart of---crayfish.' Through snow, rain, and sunshine, the plane geometry wizards and dullards trudged to daylight services in room 212, under the auspices of Miss McBride. During the month of December, our class decided to sponsor a Christmas Dance. A few days before this gala event was to transpire, the ticket committee became alarmed by the number of tickets they had NOT sold. Some talented classmate wrote a musical commercial to the tune of Jingle Bells, which our entire class sang to the amazed student body during an assembly program. Surprisingly, many of those same boys and girls attended the dance despite the song In our February class meeting, the sub- ject of class-rings was brought to the fore. After a long discussion, it was agreed upon unanimously that our rings be ordered this year. A committee was chosen to select the rings and display them to the class. We hope that by next year we may have them to display on our fingers. Now, in March, the members of our class are concentrating on First Aid. We are all wrapped up in this work, as we bandage each other from head to foot. We have learned how to locate the pressure points and are capable of applying a tourniquet, especially around the neck. In case of accident, just contact any member of the class and he will gladly give you the proper First Aid treatment. Of course, the results are not guaranteed. Among the remaining activities of our Sophomore year is a long deferred hsyride. It was to be held during the winter, but be- cause of the snow which was too deep for the horses and for us, we thought it best to post pone it till spring. Our hopes are high that the years to come will be just as successful as this one, has been. Best of luck and a quick journey home, , fy., P if wf,19 SOPHOMORE CLASS Class Officers President--Richard Grieb Treasurer-- James Kern Vice-President--Gerald O'Nei1 Secretary--Christine Blose Faculty Advisers--Mrs. Tuttle, Miss Sack, Mr. Yost Adkins, Charlene Adkins, Glennagene 'Al1en, Richard Archer, Neil Aydelott, 1013 Bair, Frederick Barva, David Beanland, laura CBeatty, Mary Gray Bingham, Gladys Blose, Christine Bressee, Wilbert Wiiretz , Grace Culmer, Emma Rose Cunninsham, John Dodge, Patsy Dunlap, Robert Essex, Jeanne Evans, Mary Alice 'Moved Fitting, Nyla French, Nancy Jean Garnand, Janet Gibbs, Luceda Grieb, John R. We discovered to our dismay that the boys and girls had been separated and herded into two different homerooms. We were reunited, however, at our class party which was held early in the year. Our chaperones were subjected to mild forms of torture, one of which was a lie detector in- vented by one of the more ingenious members of the class. Much to the relief of the female members of our class, the fellows have finally dis- covered the purpose of a comb. It was with considerable surprise that we observed the once-tousled heads converted into well-groomd ones. Mr Felice has been very patient with us in Civics class. Besides teaching us the fundamentals of a democratic government, he succeeded in directing our uncertain minds to possible future vocations. Several of the Latin students discovered that the 'dead language' was not for 'dead brains' and as a result, the number of membem in that class has been slowly diminishing. This is also true of the Algebra class. Most of the ninth grade boys are recupen ating from a strenuous season of basket-ball and wrestling. Perhaps some of the neglected studies will now be resumed, and the teachers will be able to discontinue their scoldings ae until next year. The students in homeroom 203 wou1dn't trade places with anyone. Ur. Fe1ice's faithful radio affords entertainment morning, noon, and after school. They hear everything from Gene Krupa to John's Other Wife. Now that Spring is beginning to pay an occasional visit, more and more Freshman names appear on the absentee list. No. 734697 il: Postmaster New York, New York Somewhere in Belgium Dear Willie, A lot has happened since we thankfully closed our seventh grade books for the last time. We were saddened by the loss of Mr. Dingle to Waterford High, for we could no longer look forward to his famous mystery stories, In his place is Mr. May, who has special talents of his own. He is very meti- culous about his classroom. Every seventh period he insists upon dusting the floor with one of his students, and then depositing the ur1f0I'tl1I19t6 one outside the door. During football season, our Junior Varsity defeated Waterford with the astounding score of 12-O. This result may be accounted for by the fact that many of our classmates were on the team. Our class meetings are examples of per- fect order and cooperation. So perfect, in fact, that Mr. Skala and several patrol boys are always handy in caze of an emergency. The citizens of Lawrence Park have organ- ized a wonderful Youth Center. It provides entertainment for boys and girls of all tastes The only drawback is that we are excluded from it until we reach maturity .... Freshman age. In order to quiet our indignant mutterings, e committee of adults started hobby clubs for our interests. Their desired results were ob- tained as we became engrossed in various fiehm such as riflery, painting, dramatics, sewing, photography, and ping pong. Not long ago, a class for would-be baton twirlers was organized. Many of the girls in our class are taking it up with high hopes of being future twirlers for the Lawrence Park band. A common sight in the eighth grade home- rooms ls bandaged and splinted students crawl- ing laboriously up and down the aisles. Baton lessons were offered to those in- terested. Girls of every size and flavor snatched up the opportunity, and under the nearly professional supervision of twirler, Jeanne Trudeau, learned the basic intricates of baton twirling. To compensate for our being excluded from the glamour of the new Youth Center, hobby clubs were organized for our enjoyment Many of the Lawrence Park homes have been opened to us in order that we may carry on our particular hobbies. By now, we have learned to ignore the taunts of the older students. Having sur- vived the first year of our basic tra1r-ng with few casualties, we feel more capable of undertaking later the Obstacle Course ---- that is High School. Yours for a peacetime graduating class, Hoping to see you soon, Zdwqlffw We A. P. O. 13134617 cfo Postmaster New York City New York Somewhere in Germany Dear Hike, 'Class of 1950 The words rang in our ears with a note of dignity as we strode smugly through the huge but inviting gates of the High School. Soon dampened were our spirits, however, as we discovered the great difference between sixth and seventh grades. In the sixth grade, we were the traditional 'Kings of the Castle.' In seventh, we are the mice, abused and downtrodden by the cats of the upper classes. One of the many things for which we are grateful to Mr. Rhodes is his organization o dancing classes for all who were interested. Of course, only girls attended at first, but when they finally convinced their male friends that all dancers were not sissies, some of the bolder fellows ventured forth to test their talents for dancing. Jeedless to say, many of them are considering possible Fred Astaire careers. Our class meetings began enthusiastically. We discussed everything from a skating party to the Prom. It was not long before we dis- covered the monopolizing attitudes of the upper clasemen. We had a party on January 19, where those skilled in the technique of dancing could exhibit their prowess. Besides various games, we were fortunate to have with us an expert fortune teller. To add to the amuse- ment and confusion, a stray mongrel persisted in the invasion of our party. The thousands of sport fans no longer attend the games to view the unflinching, heroic players, but to watch breathlessly the charming and enthusiastic cheerleaders. The qualifications of a cheerleader are few and simple. Naturally, an exceptionally large mnuth, capable of producing a booming noise, appears first on the list. The voice should have the volume to carry to the farthest corner, even to calling home a stray cow. Every cheerleader is equipped with a beautiful Ipana toothpaste smile a smile which is frequently forced to conceal the expressions that would otherwise appear Posture happens to be but a minor detail Just permit your legs and arms to fly in anv direction they desire and never allow yourself to stand with your shoulders thrown back and stomach held in No doubt if you stood and walked in such a manner, you would be politelv asked to resign from the squad Co operation has no place at all on the cheerleading team Everyone has his own ideas as to the way things should be done, so, he carries out his own theories It would be considered selfish if the captain expected us to do the same th ng at the same time You will see one or two dashing excitedly to their cheering positions the instant the referee blows his whistle for time Two or three others wlll be engaged in an unintelligent conversation and will be enraged not to wake up until the cheer has been called Thev proceed lazily to take their place, giving the alert opponents the opportunity to cheer first Then the great moment arrives, the half Each cheerleader hastens to leave the gym Another coat of lipstick is applied over lips that are already too red, another layer of powder is slapped on and last but not least, an attempt is made to comb hair that most resembles string Suddenly, the anxious audience begins yelling madly the cheerleaders are paradins in again Cheer' Cheer' greets their ears, and at the end of one cheer, they have the same appearance they had before leaving their fans Wilma FOX l12Al ON COMINP HOME LATE The sweat streamed down my forehead and for mv house key I just knew I had it but went through, but to no avail I had almost neck as I frantically searched where?
