Black Tugs Red To Victory The Munchkin's march to music. Black Captain Kerry Kapfer and Red’s Nancy Culver confront at the witching hour. Red's three year winning streak ended this year in an action packed sports show. Although Black dominated the show from the beginning, Red made a comeback, which bounced the two teams into a tie. The last event, the tugo-war was the decisive event. At first, it seemed the event would never get off the ground because the rope broke twice. Then, some ingenious coaches and sports show assistants remedied the situation. The rope was tied and taped and on a third try Black pulled Red out of the gymnasium. Soccer, tugo-war, gymnastics, laps and medley relay were won by Black, hurdles, volleyball, basketball, and field events were won by Red. With the slight win over the Red team. Black broke the all-time sports show tie. The record now stands with Black at 9 wins and Red at 8. Lion Spark Rekindled by Allen’s Pep Club The 1971-72 Pep Club proved to be an energetic and spirited group. The girls added a great boost to L.H.S. and backed the athletic program all the way. Pep Club's activities ranged from surprises for all the athletes, money raising projects such as working at A W, painting their office red and black, the ever-present W.P.A.; one racy assembly, (among others), and to top it all off one enthusiastic collection of girls, cheering their way through many games. The newest addition to Pep Club was the male sponsor, Mr. Allen, and the new look of the Chesty Lion . 72's Pep Club has indeed shown a great improvement over the past years, and has opened new doors for the coming years. The club attended two Playdays, one at Atchison and one at Emporia. They placed second at Emporia. The club sponsored the annual Volley- ball Sportsday. This year the Lawrence Girls' Volleyball team received a plaque for second place. Several members attended a P.E. Career Day at Kansas University. They were taken on a tour and listened to several speakers. Leaders Club spent many long hours to put on the annual Girls' Sports Show. Each member helped in the teaching of the entrance and the exercises. The club itself put these routines together. LEADERS CLUB OFFICERS-Patty Hermes. Basketballs Bouncing for Girls too 1972 was the first year for the LHS girls' basketball team. After the long and rigorous tryouts in December fourteen girls, six sophomores, three juniors and five seniors were chosen for the team. The team began their regular practices in early January which led to their first game with Atchison January 20. Though they were defeated at the first confrontation they were still determined. Their season finally took a turn for the better during their fourth game when they defeated Mount Saint Scholastica at Atchison 33-28. After this initial triumph the team couldn't be stopped. They were undefeated by Kansas schools. Their season ended with an overall 5-5 record. A final touch was added by the basketball girls taking the 2nd place trophy at Atchison's Invitational Tournament. Coach Joan Lundstrom was pleased with the team for the first season and has great aspirations for next year's girls' basketball team. 55 COACH-Joan Lundstrom GIRLS' GYMNASTICS-back row-Tami Harris. This year girls at Lawrence High have been fortunate enough to be able to participate as a team in the ever exciting sport of gymnastics. Through the time, effort and help of Mrs. Bacharach the team was able to practice Monday thru Thursday until at least 5 o'clock. The girls were nearly all beginners. They attended a total of five meets, one of which was at home. All the meets were fun for everyone, but a bit scarey at times. The team was made up mostly of juniors who will return next year with definite plans on improving this year's record. These girls hope to apply the newly acquired knowledge, skills, and strength to the team to have a successful season. Credit is due to Mrs. Bacharach, and two L.H.S. graduates, Mary Meier and Joan Smith, for their excellent coaching throughout the season. 56 GIRLS' SOFTBALL TEAM-back row-Patty Hermes, Sandy Taylor, Kathy O'Toole, Janet McKenzie, Debbie Webb. Girls at Bat ’72 The 1972 Girls' softball team had a short and rather disheartening season. After rigor- ous tryouts and a week of dedicated practice, they went into their season with an exciting 21-20 victory over Atchison on their home field. The remainder of the season didn't go quite as well. At their next game they suffered a humiliating defeat by William Christman High at Independence and their final game was a disappointing setback by Atchison. Though two out of the three season games were losses, the girls enjoyed themselves and learned a great deal about the game. Coach Lundstrom has high hopes for next year's team which may have as many as 10 returning juniors and seniors. It is hoped that someday enough time and emphasis will be put on softball to make it another one of the major girls sports. Sophomore Dodie Jordan eyes the ball. 57 COACH-June Bacharach This year, the second year for the girls' tennis team, had several advantages over last year. For the first time they were organized enough to divide into both a varsity and junior varsity squad and the school's four new tennis courts made it possible for the girls to have regular practices. However, due to such factors as strong competition and lack of experience the team did not fare well in interschool competition. Though there were many individual triumphs throughout the season the only team victory was over Olathe in a dual meet here. The top six team members participated in the Regional meet at Shawnee Mission East, and though none qualified for state competition, many valuable experiences were gained. The girls who attended the state meet were Dawn Allen and Sheila Hunsinger singles; Kris Palmquist and Lee Rader, and Barbara Whitehead and Debbie Webb, doubles. For the first time ever, girls have been given the opportunity to participate in interscholastic volley- ball. In the past, only leaders club members were allowed to be on the volleyball squad. Miss Lundstrom, the sponsor and coach, held tryouts the first part of September. 15 out of 72 girls that came out were selected for the Varsity and Jr. Varsity teams. After the team was chosen, the girls had two weeks to practice before the season started on October 2. On October 16, Lawrence hosted a sportsday with the following teams participating: Varsity and Jr. Varsity Lawrence, Raytown South, Atchison and William Chrisman. Lawrence Varsity and Jr. Varsity placed 2nd and 4th respectively. The season closed with the regional tournament held in Holton, Kansas on October 23, in which Lawrence placed 3rd. The final season record stood at 7 wins and 11 losses. 60 The cake, with marshmallows in the shape of the female symbol, was one of the reasons for attendance to the WCC sponsored International Women's Day party. Conscious Women Form Coalition A group called Women's Consciousness Coalition was formed at LHS last fall with the goal of educating members, and those around them to the real and the ideal status of women. WCC initiated and celebrated Women's Week (March 6-10) with displays of books and posters as well as a party on International Women's Day (March 8), at which free marshmallows were distributed. Other activities have included films, speakers, a commemorative birthday party for suffra- gette Susan B. Anthony, and a sponge throw at the Kayette-Stuco Carnival. Ms. Alice Owens was the sponsor. The visits to the several rest homes in the area were continued and much appreciated, Kayettes sponsored and worked on a New Years Party for underprivileged children, which proved to be very rewarding both for the children and for the Kayettes. Heart Sister week was we 11-supported and many Kayettes took part in the fun of this traditional event. Teaming up with the Student Council, Kayettes helped pull off another extremely successful money-making carnival. Many Christian stu- dents and Kayettes also combined to produce the annual Easter assembly which was well-received by most. The usual election of officers and presentations of awards wound up the 1971-72 year for the Lawrence High Kayettes. Although the Lions failed to qualify for the state meet and showed some serious inconsistencies throughout the season, many runners showed great potential and there was always a lot of spirit and enthusiasm. The highlights of the season were winning the Seaman Invitational and placing second in the Lawrence Invitational. Pacing the Lions this year were Captain Glen Lemesany, Jack Moorhead, and Bob Silipigni, all seniors. Next year's prospects are bright for cross country with ten of thirteen lettermen returning. Adding to the team's strength this year were Tom Schmitendorf, Paul Keim, Roger Schweppe, Dale Culver, and Richard Sweeney, juniors, and John Rinken- baugh, Dave Roush, Phil Wedge, Clay Kappel- man, and Barney McCoy, sophomores. COACH FRANK GIBSON This year Frank Gibson took over as head coach of the Lawrence High School football team after Don Pfutzenreuter resigned to accept a position in New Mexico. As a player, Gibson was All-State in Ohio and captain of his high school team. He then went on to KU where he was a three-year starter at offensive tackle, and an All Big Eight selection. After coaching at Hays High for three years and serving as an assistant at L.H.S. under Al Woolard for two years, Gibson went to Cleveland Heights (Ohio) High School, where he posted a 44-22-4 record in seven seasons of coaching. The team never had a losing season during that time, and Gibson led them to their first Lake Erie League championship in twenty years. This year Gibson brought the Lions back from a 4-5 record to 6-3, and sixth place in the powerful Sunflower League. New Coach Leads to 6-3 Record 13 27 29 10 3 43 35 15 13 VARSITY SCOREBOARD 12 S.M. This year's field was the largest in the history of Kansas. Finishing first, with 113.58 points was Lawrence. Coach Bob Manning thus continued with his habitual State Championship. The Kansas Gymnastics Coaches Association named the Kansas All-State team which included the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each event. For Lawrence this All-State team included: All-Around, Steve Wilbur, 2nd; Long Horse Vaulting, Chris Starks, 3rd; Side Horse, Steve Wilbur, 2nd; Horizontal Bar, Keith Thompson, 2nd; Steve Wilbur, 3rd; Parellel Bars, Keith Thompson, 3rd. Other top finishers for Lawrence were: Rick Young, 5th in Long Horse; Dan Church, 6th, and Steve Wilbur, 7th in Floor Exercise; Steve Wilbur, 6th in Parallel Bars; and Kevan Vick 8th in Still Rings. For each State meet there is selected an outstanding gymnast for the entire year. This year Kevan Vick received the Outstanding Performance Award. Kevan, a senior, was in his first year of gymnastics. With all the handicaps of the premiere year of a complex sport, he moved from no competitive experience to the number one ringman for LHS by the end of the season. Vick was the only first year gymnast that made the finals of the State Tournament. JERRY HANSON KEVAN VICK 117 Kevan Vick performs with excellence for a first year gymnast. The Editor’s Afterthought The purpose of this year's RED AND BLACK yearbook was to portray the 1972 school year as accurately and completely as possible. We, the staff, feel that this has been done, and more. In fact, we belive this to be the finest book in Lawrence High history. We hope you share our opinion. As in every endeavor, there are several people that should be commended for their work. This production is no exception. Thanks go to Ellen for producing very fine drama and music sections; to Rog Schmidtberger, Judy and Kathy (who, at one time, could have recited the sophomore and junior class lists forward and backward) for cutting pictures and alphabetizing; to Brun for coming to class on occasion; to Jeff (and Debi) for entertaining us all; to Elaine for taking my constant griping all semester; to Steve, Renee, Diane, and Lynn for coming through with some fantastic artwork; to Tony for saying, You're the editor. I'm just the advisor. ; to Jane for helping me maintain some sanity; and especially to John (who spent as many hours at LHS as Mr. Medley) and all the darkroom boys for making it possible for this book to have photographs. Thanks also go to my parents, friends, and teachers for putting up with me. The 1972 RED AND BLACK staff has tried to present a book that with which you can not only remember the year 1972 twenty years from now, but one that you can enjoy at the present. We hope we have.
