T has been said that even though lack of skill accounts for many failures in life, personality shortcomings such as lazi- ness, frivolity, carelessness, or lack of cooperation account for as many. ln other words, "Know-how" is still mighty important but so is the matter of human relations. lt may be true in certain iob areas that initial promotions depend largely on skill, bu: when a person has reached his first supervisory level, human qualities suddenly loom large. We can do much about both attributes in school and after. Good luck! ?A-WdJ6L'o'U'dL IVING in this complex, present-day world requires that each of us moves carefully and cautiously lest serious mistakes be made. As seniors you will soon be graduating from high school and embarking on varied paths. Whether it be college, industry or business, one needs to think carefully and to be able to express himself clearly. We are prone with so many modern forms of communication to rely on what others say and do and not on our own thinking. Oftentimes our thinking may be good but we are unable to convey these thoughts to others. Lawrence High School has provided definite aids for a suc- cessful future. May each attain his desired goal. Y. ONGRATULATIONS! You are about to graduate from Law- rence High School. This is a distinct accomplishment. Your diploma signifies that you have made numerous adiustments to meet standards and to abide by the regulations of an accepted institution. As you go on your way through life, may you continue to meet new challenges and experiences with courage and the determination to do that which is right and proper. fngfy

Mr. Kriz, Miss Corazza, Miss Hartman, Mr. Page. GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT ARK HOPKINS, the great educator, once related that the most eliective guidance he offered was at a time when he sat at one end of a log and his student at the other. No logs, to be sure, can be found in our Guidance Department, but among achievement records, college applications, personality records, college catalogs, change slips, requests for conferences, ringing telephones, students, parents, and a multitude of other indications of guidance activities, can be found our four busy counselors- Mr. Kriz, in charge of placement and counseling of boys in the vocational courses: Miss Hartman who counsels with Sophomore girls and all Freshmeng Mr. Page who works with Sophomore, Junior, and Senior boysg Miss Corazza who works with Junior and Senior girls.. For you, the members of the class of l956, the introduction to this Department came when four short years ago, you embarked upon a program arranged in conference with you while you were still in the eighth grade. Since that time, as we continued to plan with you, we attempted through tests and conferences to help you evaluate your abilities and interests, we tried to relate your assets to the requirements of the occupational and educational goal that lies beyond your graduation from Lawrence High School. We hope that Commencement will mark the beginning of a happy and constructive adult life for you, regardless of the area of your pursuits. We who have been so interested in your development will not soon lose interest in your future. Our very best wishes to you, and with them we offer for your thoughts, these verses of Jessie Rittenhouse: I bargained with Life for a penny And Life would pay no more, However, I begged at evening When I counted my scanty store. For Life is a iust employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire, Only to learn dismayed That any wages I had asked of Life, Life would have paid. ll
