AN A Gang is comprised of Machinists Mates and Enginemen. They are responsible for maintaining and repairing all of the auxiliary equipments. These include the air conditioning plants, small boat engines, freezer decks, steering units, fan rooms and the emergency diesel generators. A lot of their time is spent on air conditioning as the modern electronics and crew comfort demands peak AKC efficiency. The small boats are another item A Gang spends time on as they have to be ready at a moment's notice. They also maintain the emergency diesel generators. If the ship ever drops the load, the only way to get things started again is if there is electric power available to restart the boilers which in turn make everything else go. During the cruise A gang has been kept very busy due to the high heat and the ever present threat of hostile actions. They have performed all tasks in a professional manner.
