The steam they produce and send throbbing throughout the miles and miles of piping bring life to every part of the ship, either directly or indirecly. Without this livegiving steam, the ship would be nothing more than a dead lifeless hulk. It takes more than just going down and lighting fires in a boiler to make this heart perform. It takes a special kind of man, one who is dedicated completely to the profession he is in. It is a hard and tedious job, requiring many long hours, usually more than Father Time has allowed us in a day. But the Heroes of the Deep move on, always ensuring that the lifegiving steam is there.
