The transit across the Atlantic took ten days, including a brief stop for fuel at Ponta Delgada in the Azores. LAWRENCE and her consort USS NICHOLSON were fortunate in encountering fair weather during their ocean crossing. After a brief stop at Rota, Spain to refuel, load mail and inchop into the Sixth Fleet, LAWRENCE entered the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar. She arrived four days later at Port Said at the northern end of the Suez Canal. The Suez transit took nearly 18 hours. It began late at night on October 14 and ended at Port Suez at the entrance to the Red Sea the following day. After four days in the Red Sea LAWRENCE stopped at Djibouti on the Horn of Afr' f f l d h . i , , ica, or ue an t en transitted the Arabian Sea, entering the Persian Gulf on 21 October and relieving USS THOMAS C. HART on 24 October. LAWRENCE spent the next four months as a unit of the Mideast Force during a period of steadily increasin tensions due to the Irani-Iraqi war and the civil war in Lebanon Iran threatened to close the Straits of Hormuz if th g ' h I , . . - e war wit raq went agalinstlher. Lateril angered ohvler U.S. bombing raids against Shi'ite factions in Lebanon, Iran threatened to launch suicide air I1 tt a sur ace a ac s against ideast Force ships. On board LAWRENCE the already high state of readiness was increased to fail wartime peak as, despite Iranian threats, LAWRENCE continued her patrols in the Central Persian Gulf and the Straits of ormuz. Although most of the time in the Mideast F , Y port visits. ' orce was spent on patrol the ship's company did get a few well earned libert lr1LNovembEr IEAXVRENCE and the Mideast Force flagship, USS LASALLE spent three days in the United Arab Emirates e warrnt o t e reception made Dubai a truly memorable port V1S1t. Several members of the British and American communities invited crewmembers over for a home-cooked meal. In early December LAWRENCE spent ten days in Bahrain for an upkeep period. The inport period gave LAWRENCE crewmen 'a chance to do some shopping and sightseeing in Bahrain's famous Gold Suq fMarketJ. Christmas and New Year's were spent at sea, but the holiday season was brightened by the large number of letters and care packages from home. A special surprise were the murals drawn by crewmember's children during the LAWRENCE Wives Support Group Christmas Party and by school children from Port Jefferson, N.Y. where LAWRENCE had spent a memorable 4th of July port visit the summer before. The murals were hung on the Enlisted Dining Facility where they brightened everyone's mood. Another big surprise were the gifts presented to the crewmembers by the citizens of Falkville, Alabama. Mrs. Nancy Blevins of Falkville adopted the ship for Christmas and made arrangements to collect and forward presents to all hands. I Most of January was spent on patrol either in the Persian Gulf or outside the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman. There was a brief three day inport period in Bahrain. That port visit was highlighted by a highly successful Middle East Force Inspection of LAWRENCE'S Ship's Self-Defense force and an exchange of visits, both formal and informal, with HMS GLAMORGAN, a British destroyer visiting Bahrain. In late January LAWRENCE left the Gulf, transiting the Arabian Sea to Karachi, Pakistan, where she spent four days in early February. Although the night life and social activities in Karachi were severely limited, it proved to be a bargain- hunter's paradise. Many crewmembers found excellent buys in onyx, brass, leather, rugs and brass-inlaid wood items. A crewmember without a well-tailored leather jacket was an exception by the end of the Karachi port visit. February passed quickly while LAWRENCE patrolled the Central Persian Gulf. The final days of February saw LAW- RENCE transiting the Straits of Hormuz for the last time on her way to Djibouti to turnover with her relief USS BOONE. The turnover with BOONE took place on 9 March 1984. LAWRENCE then proceeded north through the Red Sea, transiting the Suez Canal on 12 March. A three day transit brought LAWRENCE to Palma de Mallorca, where the crew enjoyed an excellent three-day port visit to one of the top resort spots in the Mediterranean. A day after leaving Palma de .Mallorca, LAWRENCE transited the Straits of Gibraltar. After a short stop at Rota, Spain to refuel and outchop from the Sixth Fleet, she headed west across the Atlantic on her way home. The good weather encountered in the first days of the transit soon deteriorated. By the time LAWRENCE reached Bermuda, she was encountering the high winds and heavy seas brought on by a series of winter storms. The guided missile destroyer refueled in Bermuda and then headed for Norfolk through heavy seas. USS LAWRENCE arrived home after a six month cruise on the morning of April 198f1. On Elffjpief Fefe fimililii 'Hd friends eagerly waiting to greet their loved ones. It was a joyous and emotional reunion, a itting c rmax o g y successful deployment. B C . O. COMMANDER JEFFREY L. X-Division is comprised of four ratings, Yeomen, Personnelmen, Corpsmen and the Postal Clerk. The Yeomen never have a lax period either inport or underway. They are kept, busy with keeping up with the Captain's high rate of incoming and outgoing correspondence. They maintain files of all instructions and directives issued by our command and our Bosses. Along with their normal responsibilities they have been busy preparing for the upcoming Command Inspection. It has been said that A war can't be won or a job complete until the paperwork is done. The Personnelmen are responsible for maintaining each crewmember's service record. This is vital as ap man cannot advance or be considered for any special programs unless his service record is accuate and up to date. The Personnelmen constantly keep crewmen aware of what is needed for advancement, changes in programs and qualifications achieved. They have also been working hand-in-hand with the Yeomen in preparing for the Command Inspection. The Corpsmen job is one of the most important on board a sea going vessel. They are trained to react to any type of medical emergency. When not tending to sick crewmen they are updating health records and inspecting food preparation areas and living areas. The health and well being of each and every crewmember is the number one priority of these dedicated men. The Postal Clerk is a one man post office. Most crewmembers would agree he has the most important job onboard, especially when mail is received after days and sometimes weeks with no letters. P.C. has handled over 8000 pounds of incoming mail and over 4000 pounds of outgoing mail. P.C. provides every service that a stateside post office does and at some of the most unusual hours. In all the division has many functions to keep the ship cruising. They all work hand-in-hand to get the job done with each rating helping the other in any way they can. AIN'T NOTHING BUT A THING. Supply Department is made up of Storekeepers, Disbursing Clerks, 5hips Servicemen and Mess Specialists. The storekeepers keep the ship in parts and keep the records of all items purchased. They supply parts from 4 cents up to one hundred thousand dollars. They keep track of the thousands of spare parts we carry and continually track parts which have been ordered. Equipments break down at the most unusual times and the 5K's are always ready to issue the part, no matter what time of night or day. The Disbursing Clerks handle thousands of dollars each pay day. They pay each crewmember in cash or check, whichever is needed by the crewman. They keep an accurate and complete financial record of each individual and strive to keep these records as error free as possible. Along with record keeping and filling out allotment forms, these men are daily asked to go over individual records and explain each item to the satisfaction of the member requesting the service. The 5hip Servicemen keep the laundry, barber shop and ship's store functioning. The laundry crew processes the entire crew's laundry once a week. While under way the laundry typically ran 18 to 20 hours a day. Qcontinued on next pagej First Row L to R: Sl-I1 Blancflor, SHSN Sullivan. The barber shop is a very busy place, especially the day before entering port or before personnel inspections. The barber shop, like any stateside barber shop, is a good place to catch up on the latest scuttlebutt. The ships store sells everything from toothpaste to televisions. The store supplies the crew with most necessities of life and a few of the luxuries. Whenever the store isclosed for inventory there is a wail throughout the crew. When deployed the store is the only retail outlet for the CIGW. - The Mess Specialists are the ship's chefs. While deployed they cooked an average of 1,050 meals per day for a total of well over 180,000 meals. They cooked and served everything from formal meals to cookouts.' They cooked a total of 58,512 pounds of meat, used 2,990 pounds of cheese, cooked 7,065 dozen eggs and served 5,956 gallons of milk. They also served 36,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits along with tons of canned goods. In addition to carrying out all their primary duties, these men each manned a General Quarters station as well. ffm-www' A 2 1 f f w .1 J 'a1L4f 'w' Q, ,4,.AA.. llll ,, , ,,,,,,, :L WLM'-'sw V : H -1,1 ,.,,, Q ,, 1 .. The Boatswains Mates used over five hundred gallons of paint in two complete paint outs of the entire ship. Long hours were spent in the scorching Middle Eastern sun making The LARRY the finest looking ship in the Gulf. Aside from that, the Boatswains were involved in numerous underway replenishments, bringing on over 600,000 gallons of fuel,4not to mention enough supplies to feed the entire crew for weeks! All of the UNREPS were done smoothly, quickly and without a single injury, so we felt justified in painting on our Deck Seamanship Award in Bahrain. If all of this was not enough, First Division handled numerous VERTREPS with several types of helicopters bringing on mail Clong awaited letters from homej, supplies, parts and personnel. While under way on patrol the Boatswains stationed on the Helm and Engine Order Telegraph drove the LAWRENCE literally thousands of miles. Whenever anchored after they had dropped the hook , the Boatswains Mates ran a constant patrol boat to run off would be hostiles and ran shluttles in and out of a tricky and treacherous harbor with the gig. In Palma we painted out the ship for the final time, putting on the finishing touches for arrival Norfolk, Virginia. For Deck Division, it was a grueling and busy deployment - a success not soon to be forgotten. Thanks to Mt. 51 and Mt. 52 you can hear us anywhere you happen to be. The operation and maintenance responsibility for LAWRENCE'S guns fall in the category of G-Division. In reality the division is comprised of two distinctly different ratings. First the GMG's. The gunners are directly responsible for the operation of both gun mounts. They perform all PMS to keep the gun mounts operational and ready to shoot. They are also responsible for all repairs to either mount. Another side of the C-MG's that isn't well known is the maintenance and responsibility of the ship's small arms. All of the cleanliness and issuing of any of the ship's small arms from .45 to M-60 come under GUNNERS . The second half of the division belongs to the l:TG's. The gun mounts may be working, but they do need to know where the target is and that is where the FTG's come in. It is their job to track any targets and plot where the projectile and the target will meet. This is done thanks to the radar and computer. Maintenance, operation and repair of these vital pieces of equipment rests with the PTG's. Matching gun mount to computer, GMG to PTC, results in effective deadly gunfire. WE DELIVER . . . During the MID EAST Cruise Fox Division stood watches around the clock due to the hostilities in the Persian Gulf area. 24 hours a day all vital spaces were manned to provide a quick, professional response in the event rapid, accurate firepower was needed. In addition to the long hours of watch the PT's performed daily systems operability tests and performed Preventive Maintenance to keep the missile systems in peak operational condition. Although no missiles were fired the missile crew had no doubts that any missile fired would find its target. i l K 1.f1E:.-.img 'v-1-jlgyal,-.,ce-X:fi.34.,4'.gg,.fgg .,pg:Q:1.5gff,g-,rQ-fy,-,I,l-,-1-vwvlg. Communications is our business, whether it be visually bysflashing light, or over the horizon by radio, or around the world by satellite. Our responsibility is to provide rapid and reliable communications 24 hours a day. Our division is divided into two work centers, the Radiomen and the Signalmen. The Signalmen stand their watches on the flying bridge and do most of their work outside, as they send their messages to other ships within visual range by flashing light, flaghoist and semaphore. They also assist the Officer of the Deck in the identification of surface and air contacts. The Signalmen are also well known throughout the ship as having some of the best tans onboard the LAWRENCE. The ship's Radiomen however, do most of their communicating indoors and have one of the most comfortable work centers on the ship. Ship's operations demand fast, accurate and reliable communications which are provided by the radio operators in Radio central. The equipment they operate is highly sophisticated and consists of satellite equipment, powerful high frequency transmitters and other equipment. In addition, the Radiomen provide the shorter range communications which is necessary in ship-to-ship tactical voice communications. They are responsible for the tuning and patching to remote stations in CIC, the bridge and even to the Helo Detail, the radio equipment necessary for the LAWRENCE's daily operations. During our cruise the Radiomen trasmitted over 6000 messages and processed 20,000 incoming messages. This along with all of the afore mentioned responsibilities were accomplished by a professional communications team. .'.f-d,g:w,,b.-, v .. v I Q:. h' ,,,,B, , ,,.,. ... . .. . The ancient art of Navigation has not been superceded in the nuclear age. ' In today's Navy there is a natural danger that new exciting areas of knowledge such as engineering and electronics will claim an undue share of attention - significant as they are - to the detriment of the older sciences. In every man-of-war, in every commercial or pleasurecraft, there still must be men who take exceptional pains with their work, who seek and use every possible scrap of information to check their work, and scrupulously avoid making an assumption unsupported by facts. Anything less than the utmost devotion to duty means their vessel will be unsafe and their mission left undone. ADM Thomas H. Milligan, HT1 QSWJ Middaugh, HTC Hackman g Today's Navy is more complex and sophisticated than ever before, which makes the Navyman's job more challenging. It's a i job that requires high levels of capabilities in many different environments. On board USS LAWRENCE this capability is fulfilled by the men in R-Division which is composed of the Hull Technicians and the Machinery Repairmen. F ri The Hull Tech does metal and carpentry work necessary to keep all types of shipboard structures and surfaces in good ll condition. They also take care of the ship's plumbing and ventilation system, the repair of small boats, and perform fire fighting and damage control duties. 5 X H 1 4 s The Machinery Repairman is a skilled machine tool operator. He makes replacement parts and repair or overhaul ship's 5 engine auxiliary equipment, including winches and hoists, condensers and heat exchangers. Moreover, the men in R- l Division get along well with each other and work as a team. It is like turning a nut on a bolt. These are helpful attributes f that contribute to the success of the division and the survival of the ship. 'u Therefore, R-Division serves as an integral part of the entire ship, but operates as a uniquely qualified group of individuals, li who through their effort and dedication maintain the survival and integrity of the ship, which if left alone or unattended, would serve as a lethal enemy rather than a worthy ally. i 1 1 yy F 1 xr P . The steam they produce and send throbbing throughout the miles and miles of piping bring life to every part of the ship, either directly or indirecly. Without this livegiving steam, the ship would be nothing more than a dead lifeless hulk. It takes more than just going down and lighting fires in a boiler to make this heart perform. It takes a special kind of man, one who is dedicated completely to the profession he is in. It is a hard and tedious job, requiring many long hours, usually more than Father Time has allowed us in a day. But the Heroes of the Deep move on, always ensuring that the lifegiving steam is there. During this cruise we ran the engines over 40,000 miles. Both engine rooms have been maintained in peak operating Conditions to be able to respond quickly and professionally to any and all conditions or emergencies. Watches were stood at wartime conditions, which meant very little time off, but that was the price paid to maintain peak operability. M Division is also responsible for making fresh water for the crew and feed water for the boilers. Without either of these the ship could not function. While underway the watch in Main Control is responsible for maintaining the ship's speed and answering all Engine Order Telegraph bells. In addition, all engineering status flows through this watch station to be logged and reported to the bridge. As a team M Division is unsurpassed in the fleet. Pride and Professionalism is our Number One Priority. 75 'if--V'-: .- 1,-,:..fn-.',f.-4,-W11.-.t'.,..,.f..',', . The Electricians are responsible for the generating and distribution of all the ship's electricity. Their generators can generate enough electricity to supply a small town. During normal conditions they supply electricity to every space on the ship, but during battle conditions they distribute the power in such a manner that if the ship takes a hit there is minimal loss of power. If by chance a section of the ship is damaged, the Electricians can reroute the electricity around the damaged area and supply it to vital equipments. T Most weapons systems and the bridge need to know our exact course and speed. This is where the Interior Communication Technicians come in. They are responsible for all the ship's gyro Compasses, telephones, sound powered phones and all of the associated equipments. During emergency conditions the IC men are ready at a moments notice to rig emergency communications circuits and assist in assessment of battle damages. These two groups of dedicated people are responsible for literally hundreds of pieces of equipment and about a hundred miles of cabling and wiring. 1 a11i'.'m -'.a x 1 3 fa-1-.LA,:E .. -2.1m 't .T W' ' f 1 L .drank- -.1 Qt-u4'! They are responsible for maintaining and repairing all of the auxiliary equipments. These include the air conditioning plants, small boat engines, freezer decks, steering units, fan rooms and the emergency diesel generators. A lot of their time is spent on air conditioning as the modern electronics and crew comfort demands peak AKC efficiency. The small boats are another item A Gang spends time on as they have to be ready at a moment's notice. They also maintain the emergency diesel generators. If the ship ever drops the load, the only way to get things started again is if there is electric power available to restart the boilers which in turn make everything else go. During the cruise A gang has been kept very busy due to the high heat and the ever present threat of hostile actions. It will never and was not intended to replace the six months that you have spent apart. But hopefully you can thumb through and show everyone what you have done and where you have been and some time in the future you can show your children this book and maybe then they can understand why Daddy had to be away for so long. As you have noticed, most of the pictures show everyone smiling and having a good time. Well is not this what we want to remember?
