COMMANDING OFFICER CDR R. D. Shoop Jr., USN Commander Shoop was born in Flint, Michigan and moved shortly thereafter to Mason City, Iowa where he attended public school, graduating in 1955. Upon graduation, he attended Mason City Junior College and then the State University of Iowa graduating in 1960. I In March 1961, Commander Shoop was commissioned Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve from the Navy Officer Candidate School, Newport, RI. and assigned to the USS EMBATTLE KMSO-4342 as the Mine Countermeasures-Gunnery and Supply Officer. In April 1962 he was augmented into the Regular Navy. Prior to assuming command of LAWRENCE, Commander Shoop served as commissioning Executive Officer of the USS ELMER MONT- GOMERY IFF-10822 from June 1971 to December 1972, at which time he reported to the staff of COMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRON THIRTY-TWO as Chief Staff Officer. Following a six month student tour at the Armed Forces Staff College, Commander Shoop reported' to the U.S. Naval Academy, initially serving as an instructor in the Economics Department and thence for two years as the Personnel and Administrative Officer. In addition to the Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Achievement Medal with gold star, Commander Shoop is also authorized to wear the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross Color, and Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation CCivil Medal, First Class Color with Palmj. Commander Shoop is married to the former Mildred I. Wotton of Portland, Maine. They have two sons, Robin III and Ricky, and a daughter, Rhonda, all presently residing in Virginia Beach, Va.

The current ship LAWRENCE KDDG-42 has observed the tradition established by her predecessors by performing heroic deeds of her own. After commissioning in 1962, LAWRENCE sailed for Cuban territorial waters and helped enforce the Cuban quarantine. For this action, LA WREN CE was awarded the Armed Forces Expedition- ary Medal. During the Vietnamese conflict, LAWRENCE operated as a strike unit on close-in shore bombardment operations in North and South Vietnamese coastal waters.
