USS LA RENCE DDG-4 KDDG 4j is the fifth ship of the Navy named in honor of Captain James Lawrence who said DON T GIVE UP THE SHIP as he lay mortally wounded while in command of the American Frigate CHESAPEAKE in her engagement with the British Frigate SHANNON during the War of 1812 Indeed each LAWRENCE has lived up to the heroic cry of its founder In 1846 the second LAWRENCE sent landing parties to the shores of Mexico to accompany General Taylor s Army troops in quelling hostilities there In 1914 the third LAWRENCE a torpedo boat destroyer cruised along the unsettled Pacific coast of Mexico, offering asylum and protection to foreign nationals. The current ship LAWRENCE KDDG-42 has observed the tradition established by her predecessors by performing heroic deeds of her own. After commissioning in 1962, LAWRENCE sailed for Cuban territorial waters and helped enforce the Cuban quarantine. For this action, LA WREN CE was awarded the Armed Forces Expedition- ary Medal. During the Vietnamese conflict, LAWRENCE operated as a strike unit on close-in shore bombardment operations in North and South Vietnamese coastal waters.
